Tried for a day without the big clue and couldn't solve it. 7 1/2 minutes using the ring clue! Wow, that was tough and confusing too many combinations to add up to the 20 rings
Great puzzle. I managed to find a short cut in the rule set (the cells with the gold rings can only be 1,3,7 or 9 plus there are 9 rings with 9, 7 with 7 etc.) took me 19 minutes 4 seconds to solve.
I nearly didn't try this because of the video length but gave it a go, and after a few minutes of ignoring the huge clue in the rules, managed to do it in 14:57
The trick for me was looking at row 5 in box 6. They contain 1 and 6 and one of 2 or 4, so no 9. There is no 9 in the 11 box. It means that there must be a 9 in a ring. Took 18:13 with that insight.
Loved it! Thank you so much for the solve. The "ring" rule is one of my personal favourites anyway and seeing the way the story line plays out in this one, fantastic. Spoilers ahead (to the solve and the story 😉): Sure we know what has to go in the circles, but we still got to proof it in sudokuland! So, proofing all the other digits not being "worthy" of a ring, as the solver, 😢😂. Then the one that's in the nine, like this is where evil was all along and wil be, once the magic and mystery (of an exiterior good and bad) is gone. The elfes and dwarfs fighting over the rings and that everything spreads out from the centerbox, with the 3 in the middle. The 'smooth' journey of 'oh, here is a way' but then its only step and you have to go somewhere else again, well, which of course is how sudoku works but in this context everything becomes a thrilling twist. Just marvelous👏👏👏
@sudokusleuth @7:40 you eliminated 3 from r4c1 which caused the 3 7 problem at the end. I'm not sure how it affected the logic for the rest of the solve.
At 11:54 the circle at R7C6 can only be a 4 or 9. Also there can never be a 6 in a circle as 4 boxes had 6s not in circles. From that there must be an 8 or 9 in the circle in box 3. If you try placing the 8s there’s nowhere to put one in box 7.
I took from hints from your solve, but the most important: I got lucky. Maybe deep down at my brain the hint got stuck, but not at the surface 😅 What I saw after watching your solve: Looking at the digits in box 5 and the cage 9 at box 1 we know that: - we need a 1234 number a least - we need a 789 number a least 5+7+8 (where 8 can be 2+6) = it can't be this one because due to box 6 rings+cage 5+8+7 two options 5+8+3+4 = we need a 1 or 7 due go cage 11 in box 8 5+8+6+1 = both cages 9 in box and 11 in box 8 we will use two 1 9+8+3 or 9+8+1+2 = it can't be this one becayse of: box 3 ring is a 9 and we can't have a 8 in the ring at box 8 9+7+4 or 9+7+3+1 = it is the only option we have, so after some pencilmark and solve we can deduce if we will use a 4 or a 3+1 Anyhow this wasn't an easy puzzle to solve without the hint or without thinking all the combinations. Thanks for the patience. 🤗 One Ring to rule them all One Ring to find them One Ring to bring them all And in the darkness bind them One of my favorite books and movies!!! Love it 💍
I guessed that the ring digits were probably going to turn out to be 1, 3, 7, and 9. Rather than just assuming that were the case and going on from there, I decided to prove it by assuming the opposite, hoping to find a contradiction. The easiest thing was to assume that 9 were NOT in a ring. I took 9 out of every ring, and tried moving forward from there, but within a minute or two, I found a row with nowhere to place 9. That proved that 9 had to be in there, and after placing the 9's (where you identified they would be if there rings did include 9) and working the puzzle a bit, I found a box where the other rings were a 37 pair. Then that left only a 1 to get up to 20 total digits inside rings. That rune appears to be an old form of the "K" rune from the Cirth script, used by the Dwarves in LOTR. I don't know the significance of it, but maybe someone else knows. My time today was 15:13, solver number 2716.
Not sure if it's 'cheating' to use the rhyme in the rules but I assumed it was accurate and finished in 8:23 and my solve times are normally (taking into account you're explaining things and that adds time for you), fairly similar.
Hi Sleuth - Good to see you back. I don’t know whether you’ve considered this but the guys at Cracking the Cryptic pre-record a few videos that they can put out if life gets in the way. I miss yours when you’re not here.
The break for me was when I got to the 49 cell in r7c6. Looking around there I found out that 5 boxes could not have a ring with 4 in them, plus box 7 ring was forbidden to have a 4 by sudoku. So it must be 9. And from there it was easy
The 37 error was literally the first minute of the solve. I'm much more forgiving of these kinds of errors when they are wrong. ;) I got the 6 can't be in a ring fairly quickly, but didn't appreciate it forces a 6 into r6c4 which then forces a 7 into a box 8 ring and I think that is pretty elegant. I ended up pencil marking every ring and was able to eliminate 4s from the rings which forced a 9 into a box 8 ring.
Great puzzle.... Bravo for posting your solve of it.... Genuinely by avoiding the hard work of working out the combinations of 59-78 from Box 5, you ruined the solve so much more ! Not wanting to bifurcate was just a lazy excuse Sleuth! And you had to look at orange as being 7 or 8... And you can see if red is 9, 8 is impossible. But if red is 5, 8 is possible and breaks on the other digits. ..And 5 breaks with 7 again on the other digits needing to be 26... The logic of elimination was so cool, that by not doing the hard yards you really lost out on the beauty of the logic!
@@SudokuSleuth... Is there a plan to move to the 30-45 mins bracket if puzzles... More 2 stars/3 stars and the logic is very interesting... Nowadays the 1 stars and standard variants are becoming repetitive logic wise... I enjoy the oil-water and equality cages and some of the newer variants that give novel logic!
fully trusted the rhyme and did 08:57
d'oh
@@phoebeyu2566 Same but 50% slower than you. Nice going!

I'm giving you props for managing to solve it without using the massive clue in the rules.
glad you're back sleuth! Took me 13:37 using the rhyme. This was fun!
16:06 ... it was quite easy using the assumption that the rhyme in the rules is accurate. Dead giveaway.

29:31 here. Without understanding that the rhyme has an influence on the puzzle 😂. Thanks Sleuth.

I'm still glad you posted the video because it was a fun puzzle.
34:20 for me. I had to backtrack a bit when my maths let me down - it shouldn’t be too hard knowing 3 of the digits!!!
The reason for so many solves is that this was part of a Cracking the Cryptic Patreon bonus pack. The rune was also used in that.

16:19, so much fun.

What I saw after watching your solve:
Looking at the digits in box 5 and the cage 9 at box 1 we know that:
- we need a 1234 number a least
- we need a 789 number a least
5+7+8 (where 8 can be 2+6) = it can't be this one because due to box 6 rings+cage
5+8+7 two options
5+8+3+4 = we need a 1 or 7 due go cage 11 in box 8
5+8+6+1 = both cages 9 in box and 11 in box 8 we will use two 1
9+8+3 or 9+8+1+2 = it can't be this one becayse of: box 3 ring is a 9 and we can't have a 8 in the ring at box 8
9+7+4 or 9+7+3+1 = it is the only option we have, so after some pencilmark and solve we can deduce if we will use a 4 or a 3+1
Anyhow this wasn't an easy puzzle to solve without the hint or without thinking all the combinations. Thanks for the patience. 🤗

Damn I too missed the clues in the rules. 27 mins
34 minutes in i realized i'd messed up somehow so i just started over. my total time was 65 minutes 😅
Wow thats a first, massively beat your time. Only really took a few minutes when you know the circles can only have values of 1,3,7 and 9.
