He had better legs than Duran and he was a faster combination puncher with superior reflexes. Ray proved that in the second fight when he boxed HIS fight and didn't play into Durans game. And even in the first fight when Leonard chose to stand in front of Duran he gave as good as he got in a bout that was decided by the slimmest of margins. Stylistically Hearns was all wrong for Duran and will always be no matter if Durwn was 25 years old and in shape. Hearns had too much reach( Duran said Hearns reach was just impossible to get past)Height, POWER And speed for Duran. And Benitez knew how to offset Durans offense and pick off his shots. He was too adept at reading Duran and anticipating what he was going to do. Benitez was an exceptionally talented defensive phenomenon who in his prime was hard to hit clean with one shot let alone a combination. This is about styles. If Benitez could trade feints with a prime Leonard and make leonard miss a lot of his punches, then its logical he would do the same to a prime Duran. However I do believe Duran in his prime at 147 would have given Benitez a hard night with the right game plan because Benitez didn't have the same legs and mobility as Leonard and Duran was quick on his first step. However he would have to shift his attention to Benitez body by feinting to the head and not be as predictable as he was when they actually fought.

Panama/Mexico, much respect. You both built Roberto genetically. Father Mexican American, Mother Indigenous Panamanian.
Like a young
Ryan Garcia..
Time will tell if RG makes it to the top.
Poss a bit too big headed to become a legend like RD.
And that pound for pound Mexican from Manchester is boosting his ego too much.
I see where your coming from, he has that same vibe and sort of looks. But i think roberto duran was a very smart fighter, which made him one of the most complete fighters in history in my opinion.
Ryan garcia is not even near a complete fighter. Fast hands and accurate thats about it! But, he is still one of the best today..
I miss these old days!!
His longevity at the top level was Durans best ability and he does deserve recognition but he fouled Buchanan in his first world title and should have been disqualified. He QUIT against Sugar Ray Leonard he got beat by unknown Kirkland laing he got knocked out in 4 by Tommy Hearns among other losses. But he did beat Leonard first fight and beat Barkley impressively but he still fouled Ken Buchanan and should have fought a rematch.
