Love the pants. HA. On a serious note, nice to see a VERY young Duran in his prime. I gotta admit, I’m a kid from the 80s. Sugar Ray Leonard was the one we rooted for. However, watching more and more Duran clips i like Duran a lot maybe even more than Sugar Ray. Thanks 4 postin this rare clip.

Roberto Duran fought pro in 5 decades, he holds world titles in 4 different divisions lightweight, welterweight, jr middleweight, middleweight 135 - 160 pounds, and he also holds knockout wins in every round. Meaning, Duran throughout his career scored knockout wins in every round, 1 through 15. MANOS DE PIEDRA.
No other fighter has done this.

Let's stop and think for a minute: Imagine that Duran actually trained and stayed in shape between fights....he would have been unbeatable. He would have beaten Leonard again, ko'd Hearns ( he was totally out of shape in that one) and easily beaten Benitez ( didn't train at all). He gave a prime Hagler a tough 15 round fight at Middleweight when he was way past his prime and 25 lbs over his real fighting weight. Unreal how great this Roberto Duran was.

Exacto . Saludos.

My boyhood idol alongside Muhammad Ali. The greatest fighters were born out of fearlessness and the desire to be great and Duran was prepared to mix it with anyone and at any weight. His rivalry Sugar Ray Leonard is a thing of legend.

Duran was a phenomenal fighter and had he stayed in a spartan frame of mind in regards to his training, he would no doubt have had even more victories to celebrate on his ledger. However to say he would have beaten Leonard, Hearns and Benitez is not a fact. Leonard was simply a superior fighter when it came to to adapting. He had better legs than Duran and he was a faster combination puncher with superior reflexes. Ray proved that in the second fight when he boxed HIS fight and didn't play into Durans game. And even in the first fight when Leonard chose to stand in front of Duran he gave as good as he got in a bout that was decided by the slimmest of margins.
Stylistically Hearns was all wrong for Duran and will always be no matter if Durwn was 25 years old and in shape. Hearns had too much reach( Duran said Hearns reach was just impossible to get past)Height, POWER And speed for Duran. And Benitez knew how to offset Durans offense and pick off his shots. He was too adept at reading Duran and anticipating what he was going to do. Benitez was an exceptionally talented defensive phenomenon who in his prime was hard to hit clean with one shot let alone a combination. This is about styles. If Benitez could trade feints with a prime Leonard and make leonard miss a lot of his punches, then its logical he would do the same to a prime Duran. However I do believe Duran in his prime at 147 would have given Benitez a hard night with the right game plan because Benitez didn't have the same legs and mobility as Leonard and Duran was quick on his first step. However he would have to shift his attention to Benitez body by feinting to the head and not be as predictable as he was when they actually fought.

His longevity at the top level was Durans best ability and he does deserve recognition but he fouled Buchanan in his first world title and should have been disqualified. He QUIT against Sugar Ray Leonard he got beat by unknown Kirkland laing he got knocked out in 4 by Tommy Hearns among other losses. But he did beat Leonard first fight and beat Barkley impressively but he still fouled Ken Buchanan and should have fought a rematch.
