Love seeing Jimny's in all their various forms, especially when people are camping in them! I've gone for an internal bed set up. I'm a shorty so i can fit inside, plus I could never get the roof tent up by myself lol. Really nice video.
Great stuff Luke, thanks for posting. I recently also converted my Jimny into a mini camper. One of the old models like yours, in black too! I stripped out 3 seats, and built a platform on top of a wooden frame. I can just about stretch out in the car itself for a night's sleep. So nothing as luxurious as a top tent equiped vehicle, but despite its primitiveness, it served its purpose well for spending nine days and nights travelling around Scotland on the single lane backroads where the Jimny can shake the omnipresent campervans. Just got back from the trip a few days ago.
Ohhh that sounds ace! I was very tempted to make it so I could sleep inside but I would feel so claustrophobic haha. I would love another trip up to Scotland!
Great video mate! 👏🏻 just got myself and ‘06 JIMNY and for now have just stripped out the backseats and put a solid platform down in the back with some hooks for securing stuff down with bungees- but your set up has definitely inspired me to do more with the space! I know you mentioned you don’t have measurements for your back set up- but any extra guidance on materials used or even rough cost (to factor into the budget) would be mega! Otherwise- Beautifully shot video, stunning location- thanks for sharing the links in the description as well! 👍🏻
Nice man!! Have fun with it. So I left the side trim in, and built the box in within that, it’s likes I’ve got 2 cubby holes down the sides. Annoyingly there’s 2x metal rods that stick out so it can sit flush. I had to build in situ so can’t take it in and out easily. Hard getting something for the back door, I don’t think they do bolts big enough for the holes there and I glued something on with Gorilla glue but came off after 2/3 months
I’m thinking of setting up a roof tent on my own Jimny so you have any recommendations for setting one up, and where you got your tent? Do you need roof rails/roof rack too? The Jimny is same generation as yours also.
I think you would be all good, me and my Partner probably weigh similar. Though I want to change them purely because it would be safer when driving and more durable
The Road Traffic Act 1988 states that you can drive a vehicle up to 15 yards off a public road for the purpose of parking, but this does not confer any right to park the vehicle. If parking in laybys or car parks you must do so in line with the Road Traffic Act 1998 - vehicles may use a designated formal lay-by to rest, including overnight in a motorhome as long as the activity is contained within the vehicle - i.e. no awnings, tables, chairs, cooking etc outside the vehicle. Please Note: This also includes vehicles with rooftop tents - These are only legally permitted in formal campsites.

Thanks for the comment! I love this set up but it’s heavy. Internal sleeping would be cool, maybe I need to adjust it to fit!

I’ve mentioned all this in the video. :) links to the roof tent is int he description also!
I see you have the plastic roof rails still. Im worried they'd snap if me and my partner both got into the tent (150 kg ish). What do you think Luke?
