And those podcasters are also always like "well if you're going to be a feminist and be delusional, forget your role in society then no man is gonna date you" YES, THATS THE WHOLE POINT ANDREW, I fear the day I became not delusional enough.
ive never watched the bachelor or bachelorette because it seems strange to all be fighting over ONE person??? but my boyfriend and i have been loving watching the circle, love is blind, and the perfect match together and we pause it every like 5 minutes to chat about whats happening or comment on their behavior and talk about what we would do differently or attributes we like about people. its like a little therapy session. but its also important to watch knowing a lot of it isn't real and that a lot of those people act in a way i could never imagine accepting from a potential partner.
Despite your horrible, regretful experience on reality tv, for some reason every time you bring it up in videos I'm still so fascinated. We KNOW that reality TV isn't "real" and can be told so many times but hearing a first hand account never ceases to amaze me. Love you Kristen!
germany actually released the first lesbian dating show two years ago (I think), and the first season went pretty good. Idk if there is any way that you could watch it with subtitles, but it's called "Princess charming"
Currently watching the 2nd season of the Bulgarian Bachelor, it truly gives me an ability to immerse myself into bg culture, while living abroad, currently in my fourth year of being away. Also, I love how you are discussing a topic, in which you have some lived experience.
@@KristenLeo verilybitchie has a pretty good video about bisexuality in reality tv and a couple of lgbt dating shows are mentioned. i think they didn’t do very well so they weren’t continued
I actually clicked on Love on the Spectrum bc I thought it meant queer spectrum lol and then I was even more pleasantly surprised, not only did I get my queer representation but also some neurodivergents like me:). It’s my fav show bc it feels so real and relatable personally to me and I cry almost every episode. I do agree I don’t like the childlike way they talk and introduce the ppl but I love getting to know the people and relating and loving them all myself. I like that out of other dating shows, it’s not about the drama, it’s truly a happy show about ppl finding love. The other shows are just drama and messy. I wish there were more queer, disabled, neurodivergent reality tv shows. The hetero ones are really repetitive and without the drama is boring....a genuine wholesome show about love without invoked drama by production would actually do well and surprise execs.
I like an italian dating show called “primo appuntamento” (first date), and I think it has a nice variety of people (the include often disabled people, …) and sexual orientations. Then at the end of each pre-arranged-by-others dinner date, they show such a heteronormativity that makes my jaw drop: it’s always the male participant pretending ti pay for the meal 🙈 another example that nothing is Perfect
Thank you Kristen, the quality of your videos is amazing as always and your research shows. Thank you for speaking of the important issues for humanity and the world. You are one of the most intelligent and level headed people I have seen and listen to. Truly a luxury to listen to your perspective. I feel represented, seen and cared for, because you stimulate criticism towards social structures and dynamics, something that is hard to do alone because it is painful, specially if you are sensible to evil and unfairness.
Personally I don't watch reality TV, because I can never forget about the cameraman, and that he's just standing there all the time. But your take on it is really interesting.
I don't personally watch reality tv so it never really occurred to me that one of the reasons it's so looked down upon is because the majority of it's audience is women. Great video as always Kristen
Hey Kristen, I only watched the show because you were on it, and I think you did a decent job! I actually loved you on the show! Every normal person can imagine the pitfalls of reality tv (especially Greek reality tv), and I am telling you girl, you did good. You were my fav! I wish you find a way to release the negative energy attached to that instance of you life, because as a normal human watching the show, I thought you were great! No shame required! Love from Cyprus.
Hi Kristen, great video - as always on point. I wanted to recommend you "Love Village", a japanese, relationship reality show. I enjoyed it a lot because I felt it'sa more reallistic approach to relationship. :)
Louder for the people at the back on the points above!! Genius as ever. Thank you for this extremely interesting & truthful breakdown. Really sorry for your experience on the reality show in Greece & how it made you feel. As you asked 😅, my favourite dating show is ‘The Ultimatum’ - it’s SO interesting seeing the different relationship dynamics. I think that would actually be a great one to include established queer relationships. Lots of love ❤
Yoooo just catching up on your vids but I'm at the part where you mention the lack of queer shows and let me tell you that the second season of Ultimatum is coming out in the next month or so and that season is all queer women! The work environment was pretty awesome while filming the show! (I worked on it so I can attest to that!) it will be on Netflix. I hope it's good hehe and represents better
I wasn’t really into watching dating shows but I’m such a fangirl of yours and watch every single video, no matter what topic…so yeah now you really made me wanna watch dating shows 😂
Thank you for another great video! As someone who's not really into reality TV since I don't care for the drama, it is great to hear your views in such a broad way. It is truly interesting how program creators and editors care so much about the views and want to increase certain characteristics or dramatic situations rather than showcase people for the people they are. The cutting out is so noticeable when you get to hear the behind the scenes. A friend of mine joined a dating show, and so much was cropped. I cannot understand the negative feedback constantly towards others. Ugh. 😅 I can't handle all the drama. Great video, though.
Just wanted to leave a comment and say I love all of your takes and this style of content that you’re doing! I think a lot of what you’re saying shows that you’ve taken a lot of time to just digest the world around you and you’re lived experience in a society. It’s super fascinating for me to watch and listen to. Can’t wait to see what other videos you come up with!
You’re spot on with this analysis. Another thing ppl need to overstand is that there is an online market for relationship gurus…..let that sink in. This means that alot of these content creators in that market are not GENUINE or AUTHENTIC. THEY ARE LOOKING FOR VIEWS AND CLICKS! This should ring the alarm bells in your mind unless you lack critical thinking. Capitalism once again is destroying human relationships.
Kristen, I just want to say I'm so grateful for you and your content. You're so intelligent and really a role model for me. Wish we could be friends some time. Maybe when I'm moving to Pico. Sending love to you 💕
Kristen, thank you for this video! I loved it! This is a theme that i would love to talk about with someone. My group of friends don't see things like that, so I'm the crazy/ "single-by-choise" friend. I feel that dating this days is a consuming thing rather than connection thing, even more if you are a woman (very well reflected in tv shows). I'm tired of cis-gender roles and the pressure about going out and have dates or cassual sx. We as a generation and consumers need to talk more about this topics
i don't watch reality tv shows anymore bc im more into watching youtube videos or reading, I just love hearing you talk bc your voice is soothing and bc you're pretty and im gay
I have a lot of feelings about that woman's surprisingly anti-dictionary themed rant. I agree that reality TV gives women a neutral talking topic, and gets shit on because it's for women. But I don't really think this justifies the problems with either reality TV or sports. I think reality TV often exploits people in new ways as opposed to having them destroy their bodies. In particular the contestants often leave the show and apparently face extreme bullying and lifelong shame? While a scant few are able to launch into super stardom. As a result, contestants compulsively self-censor and appear to suffer extreme mental anguish for our entertainment, and yeah that does seem morally weird and sometimes makes me feel like a Michael-esque Bad Place Demon shrieking with joy at human suffering-- something I always cringe at when watching sports, and the suffering is physical. I would also point that most things geared at women are greenlit or written or produced or edited by mostly men, and what they think women what, and advertise for women, and give women, is pretty fucking weird. Like insofar as reality TV is actually pretty scripted, the storylines are often regressive and enforce sexist stereotypes. The lesson is rarely like "you should choose happiness as a single person over a shit relationship" or "you should leave if someone treats you like shit"; instead it's like "don't be a slut", "sex is bad", "being bisexual is bad" "all these black women are undesirable". Most of the most blatantly sexist content I've watched outside of like joe rogan BS is watching the villain edits of any modern dating show. Also couples are blatantly punished by the edit for having conflict as we can't really observe the effects of conflict or the subjects in the shortened episode form.
Girl, I would like to watch you in another reality (or not necessarily a reality but a tv show) but this time with your own terms. I was devastated by how they treat you in this show. No matter how this experience has traumatized you, I hope you become better and better every day (even though the wounds will still be visible to you 😢) and keep on doing your thing cause you are so inspiring and enlightening for a lot of people.
I always love hearing what you have to say, but your outfits are just so aesthetically pleasing, oh my god! It's lovely to see someone creating real art with their clothes 😌💚
Excellent analysis! I just want to put it out there that MTV's The Real World series is the true Reality OG. Don't forget my fave gen 2 show - Bridalplasty, truly a classic. I would also include maybe a 2.1 gen and maybe call it train wreck Reality TV with shows like Bridezilla, Bad Girls Club, Flavor of Love and the Pandora's box of shows that came out of those.
Considering how successful the Queer Eye reboot has been, like all the members now have tons of other projects going on, you’d think Netflix would have jumped on a queer dating show. It’s almost confusing that it not a thing. (Singling out queer eye because it’s reality TV that is blatantly abt the queer experience, but there is some other decent queer representation on various Netflix shows) Also a vegan cooking competition… why hasn’t it happened yet?
there's a german tv show called "princess charming" that exclusively features women-identifying and nb contestants and a lesbian "bachelorette", its pretty cute and diverse
Favorite reality tv show : the bachelor australia. They hit the perfect balance between romance, fun and reality tv antics. Also, this needs to be said: You look gorgeous in this video.
On the topic of gossip: there's a difference in psychology between gossip (being mean, talking trash) and social referencing (just talking about people without mean intentions). I can believe that social referencing is healthy, but gossip? I don't know. Maybe research is talking about social referencing?
If you think dating is hard, try being 50 and single. You can be accomplished, smart, you can even be pretty... my generation of men want women in their 30s, and young men who are interested in me, and that happens a lot more than with my own generation of men, want "just to have fun" or see me as "cougar fetish" which is sad and pretty awful. From now on, I am that woman with cats. So sick of men, I wish I was bi or queer, but even then... LGBT is not really open in my country so that would be even more difficult.
@@LexiOrchard it gets hard for variety of reasons, but some of them are: most people our age are already married, or want someone younger or they are single for a reason, for example they are irresponsible and flaky or players, and also at certain age we tend to get to know what we want and even though all that is normal, it's not easy to find, especially if you don't have a ton of friends to meet you with someone. So... cats!
I'm 48, very attractive and single by choice. Never wanted marriage and children, happy with my 3 dogs. Id love to meet someone but not online id rather it be organic.
I'm really on the fence when it comes to the idea of a sapphic dating show. Of course I would love to watch it, but I also feel like the odds that the women would be oversexualized, exploited and dehumanized by the producers is pretty much 100% and I do subscribe to the idea that no representation is better than bad representation. I also would fear for the mental health of those women because the hate they would get would be 100 times worse than what straight reality stars get which is already horrific.
I've always avoided reality TV shows because I know how producers and editors re-write the narrative in such a slimy and sadistic way. Why would I watch something that's supposed to represent real people when the entire storyline could be a complete lie?
I love watching and listening to the podcasts about the shows more than watching the shows. My favorite is dr. Honda's: Psychology in Seattle vids on these shows. So insightful although intense and sometimes I need to take a break just to listen someone mindlessly shit talk haha
Hey Kristen! I got to ''know'' you first from the reality show. It really felt that you were the most down-to-earth and interesting person on that show and that is why I followed you later on TH-cam. I am really sorry you had to experience that amount of stress but just so you know one person thought you were very cool!
It's always so baffling to me that it was such as an unpleasant experience for her. I think a lot of people heard about sustainable fashion for the first time (I remember comments on Twitter and Instagram) and also got to know Kristen. I hope she recovers soon because I actually watched that season because I knew she was in it.
I have this perception that reality TV is mostly only available on linear TV, but I guess that must be false or at least quite out of date. When I lived with my parents we didn't have commercial channels where these shows typically run, and after moving out I've never really watched linear TV. I guess I haven't really realised that these shows were available on streaming services since I never saw them while browsing around Netflix or HBO (or I didn't notice).
the *collosseum* comparison is on point, only the gladiators had somewhat of an equal chance. 💁🏽♀✨ also: i get the sentiment of justifying a queer 🏳🌈✌🏼 dating show to yourself because phobic joe on his couch needs to be educated. 😂
I used to watch The Bachelor/Bachelorette etc. but I quit after a few seasons because I was sick of getting invested in a show that has very few relationships that are successful and that last. Especially in the later seasons because people were just going on there most often to be on tv making it even less likely any relationship would actually genuinely develop and last. I don't watch any "reality" tv anymore because it is NOT reality and I'd rather see quality content with actors than bs not reality "reality" trash. A bunch of nobodies interacting with each other with none of it going anywhere.
My favourite reality shows are singles inferno and terrace house. Guilty pleasures. But the hate some contestants get is really scary and damaging and that’s ofc my least favourite part of any reality show 😢
Regarding sports: if it's not figure skating, dancing or such, then I just can't invest myself in it. I did athletics for about five years (my mother's passion and big dream, I am grateful for those years, but the sport is ultimately not for me), and I never had an ounce of investment when it wasn't my or my team's performance. Regarding reality tv: I have anxiety, and everytime I hear an argument I just get stressed 😅
It's funny because some people will look at the Nordic countries and the more egalitarian ones and say "They are feminizing their men" when in reality they are being themselves, and not being trained to be patriarchal. Like you said it is learned behavior that varies between culture, it is not by nature. I got lucky and found a great guy in college. It took me the third try though. First guy was just like my shitty parents, second guy was the opposite of my parents, a decent relationship but we didn't know what was missing (communicaion). I figured it out by the third what I wanted and how to communicate in a healthy relationship. We are pretyy egalitarian and some people even joke our roles are reversed.
As a person who doesn't really watch or really like reality tv, one thought that I also had was the fantasy of always presenting yourself in the best light and having the financial backing of the show to go to on these fantastic trips (ex Love is Blind, after they couple up after the pod). It just always shocked me seeing these people always dressed up looking what most people would deem as looking their best and doing things age having experiences that most of people on these reality show casts can't sustain in their real lives. And yes to the queer shows, I'm so tired of the heteronormativity of these shows whenever I watch or just having women kiss eachother for drama or to fulfill some male fantasy. But also including asexual persons because I think our perspectives could be helpful, if production doesn't make them look crazy for not wanting want many others want. Also, I'm sorry about the harm you experienced on that show and everything after. You have been very helpful to me when I found your channel years ago, making it easy for me to point people towards your videos when I felt like what I was saying want getting across. So, thank you. Great video as always.
great vid as always!! dope topic. surprised you didn’t mention the real world and laguna beach- trw inspired big brother, twas like the jersey shore format but earlier and mtv/mtv 2 had next and a bunch of other stuff too, I think there was maybe one gay ep of next but yknow barely counts bummer to hear your experience of being manipulated by the reality tv industry firsthand but now you have a really in-depth perspective of the situation! reality shows are so inexpensive and profitable, idk why more queer dating shows don’t exist. I mean I know why, straight people are greenlighting the shows, but it seems to be a low risk high reward thing. queer eye did well! Kristen: if you had the opportunity to create your own ‘sapphic island’ reality show, what would the rules be/what would be your pitch? follow up question: do you think there’s an ethical way to make a entertaining reality show? it’s something I’ve thought about but have never been able to answer. also I mentioned on your community post but gregg araki’s stuff, esp his 90s stuff, totally feels like a queer reality show. but they’re movies!
i really liked this video since it's related to your personal experience and all relevant points brought up. ignoring black women, fighting over the prized white girl. the problem is the way the guys are shown to try to get whomever they deem the trophy is not usually the way I would want to be treated either. also would love to see a queer one and it would be great even for people watching for the wrong reasons to be exposed to something different
Thank you for the great content and subjects, it'a really inspiring and thought provoking and refreshing. However one thing pressed a button in a wrong way, so here is yet another opinion: Venting in a safe environment is healthy, and compassion is key. Gossiping without taking into consideration all aspects of a story on the other hand can be pretty fucked up, so no, gossiping is not healthy even though it's a very human thing to do. Still not healthy though. :)
There is a german lesbian dating show which has a similar concept as the bachelor/bachelorete. Its called Princess Charming, but Im not sure if it has subtitles and its been canceled after 2 seasons due to a scandal.
my faves: dating around>> unique variety of ages and orientations, no need to watch in any particular order, brazil > usa, (netflix) twenty somethings >> slice of life, diverse, the joy of youth (netflix) love trip paris (hulu) >> v queer, but the anti-blackness so palpable terrace house >> slice of life, japanese culture, but so much contreversy (unaliving etc) Further, i used to use reaity tv as a peek into whatever country i was watching for, and in a way i've idealized a lot of places, which is partially what i think US reality tv serves as well, in a subtler way since us propoganda is so pervasive .
While I understand the nature of human beings, especially women, who enjoy analyzing dynamics and social behaviors, I think we must remember that reality tv shows are not meant to be for that, but for entertainment. You cannot learn anything about relationships or the human psyche through very short and fast clips that don't represent the people in there at all. How often have you heard stories till now that the people there got manipulated, that the cameras didn't show everything that went there, that people there lied (I'm looking at u sk)? If you enjoy them for fun, that's okay. But for the love of god, there is literally no bloody way you'll ever learn anything from smth that has been manipulated by a set of professionals to make everyone in that place seem either like a douche or better than they are
Yes to the part on black women and their mistreatment on these dating shows! As a black woman, its frustrating to watch! It would be great to have more queer representation in reality tv. I wouldn't want us made to look like fools exactly. But it feels like we really can't have anything. Considering when we do, its usually fictional shows and all the fictional shows that have queer couples end up being cancelled after a single season. The entertainment industry still has a long way to go in terms of representation with diversity, sexuality, etc.
29:56 agree but it cannot be just only Queer ppl … straight ppl the ppl that need to see the difference the most, wouldn’t bother watching it I feel, they would be wayyyyy more likely to watch if it was a mixture, and it would allow for the comparison. Let the queer ppl into the mainstream dating shows asap
ปีที่แล้ว
kristen te amo. which are your 3 fav reality shows?
Yes, queer representation would be good, but if these gaming shows are already treating straight participants inhumanely and manipulating them them they will do the same to lgbtq+ participants which will just lead to further misrepresentation.
I have an Idea how to revenge! We can make a show about the production of reality shows and make them look in the worst light! I thank you for you art and adore it. Thank you! You are amazing!
Precisely because of your last point- your experience with reality TV (that isn't very real) my mom had instilled in me and my sis to never watch reality tv, as it is often scripted and people are sleep deprived, bored and would act "scandalous " because of it. I don't want to feel like a Roman plebe at the coliseum, so f reality TV (minis the few nice shows out there, wherever they may be)
Honestly, as much as I don't like sports or reality TV or any of that stuff, I think a more apt comparison would be wrestling. That is more of a primarily male reality TV show, and like sports and reality TV, I think the reason I don't like it is because my friends and family wouldn't shut up about it. Like my mom constantly crying over a soap opera, my dad wouldn't stop yelling at the players on the screen. But of course, I shout at the top of my lungs if I lose in a video game, so what would I know?
Now I need a dating show about sapphic queer women on an island. It should be called "The Island of Lesbos," after the island that Sappho came from. (Bonus points if the show is set in a resort in Lesbos.)
Is it necessary to find "the one"? What if you like more than one person at a time? You wouldn't expect one friend to fulfill all your needs, so why expect your boyfriend to?
I agree that you can determine certain habits / actions / other elements about dating & the search for / the attempt to secure a relationship. However, the reality TV element inevitably alters it profoundly- perhaps that change though is not entirely theatrical but an intensified version of dating in which actual behaviors & such are real but dramatized, emphasized, everything 1000x more extreme in its expression. Again that doesn’t mean it’s unreal & utterly dislike dating in life itself; it’s just an exacerbation of dating & dating behaviors, a purposeful intensification by the people in the show. What is pushed by producers brings out the falsities, however, forcing things to go a certain way. MAYBE friends / family would make similar suggestions & affect relationships as the producers do in certain ways. Also even if dramatized, presenting as the most extreme elements of dating, the people on the show still ACT for the camera & spectators in ways they would very likely NOT do in real life. I think ultimately we can see some actual reality in reality tv but it’s definitively intensifying emotions, behaviors, actions, dating, etc. that are regular but way toned down in real life. & as the people know they are being gazed at, that there are spectators, they DEFINITELY ABSOLUTELY alter themselves & how they act & what they do, how they interact with others, etc. The gaze of present is inevitably heavy & sensed deeply.
@30:00 I totally agree! I think it would be such a great step to have better representation of queer people. The conversation I would then want to have is the fetishist narrative that may ensue with editing and production... seems like I'd be more shocked if they didn't do this, but I'd be very happy to be wrong.
I never really liked reality tv because it does not have much in common with reality, so much is scripted, and the rest is edited, or acted out, or people are just pushed to the brink of insanity and pitted against each other in an environment that is faaaar from natural/normal, and all that for viewers' entertainment, which is not even a great enterteinment compared to some other tv shows and movies..
Would it be possible to set up a reality tv show just for TH-cam? That way the creators and contestants have more control over the editing and who is included in the show. Idk it's an idea lol.
right now i am... just like most... watching the newest season of love is blind. and the women really looks like such bullies and mean girls in this season. but i know by now, there can be a LOT behind the scenes that makes it look worse. and already, EVERYONE online DEMANDS for the girls to publicly apologize.. like they are owned by the audience. we get entertained by these people, and can laugh and learn. some people made mistakes, but why would you as a viewer demand of someone you don't know, that they apologize??? who the F do you think you are? people are so entitled it makes me sick. Francesca Farago told about the behind the scenes of perfect match - and how NO ONE knew they had to be forced to sleep next to a man they match with. just get thrown into that scenario, forced to sleep next to someone without even knowing that is the deal. also, how ALL her scenes were cut, where she is shown as soft and nice. she was also always drunk, and was on such a high that she was kinda manipulated into looking like the villain .. and again people bullied her and DEMANDED apologies. it makes me so sick. i am just so happy to have some fun and leave my brain at the door. thank you to everyone on reality tv who made me smile. 💕 i am sorry to hear your trauma and humiliation you felt Kristen🥺 i am glad you got things into perspective and didn't do something stupid. that you are still here!! please don't ever hurt yourself. thank you for being strong, in the days where you felt weak💕 i am glad you share this. it was interesting to listen to. i always enjoy your videos.
Its true there is a lack of queer dating shows and would like to see more representation, but I also feel like there is a logistics problem. Shows like love is blind, perfect match or the bachelor work because of the opposite gender attraction, doesnt make sense if they are ALL women / men. Havent seen love island or too hot to handle (not available in my country), dont know if they would work…
The thing about Dating on the Spectrum is that it does infantalise autistic people in a way that we're so so tired of, even if it's not immediately noticeable by non autistic people. But I do understand how it can be a much more real representation of dating than the oversexualised non autistic dating shows. Dating on the Spectrum is completely the opposite in this respect, though it does tend to erase autistic sexuality. I think the reason it does this is because non autistic people want to only view us as innocent, instead of having all the same needs and desires as everyone else, because "ew autistic people want to do more than hold hands and kiss on the cheek!?! Gross.". I'd still rather watch that than see people getting starved and sleep deprived on love Island!!

Damn it, not to be creepy but a few years ago I spotted you walking with a friend along Dionysiou Areopagitou and I *almost* went up to you to tell you how I've admired you and your work for years but I was like "eh what if I DON'T descend on her like a hyena on this lovely afternoon" but if I had known then that you appreciate the attention for your channel I would have stopped you and then our relationship would've been 1/10000th less parasocial. 😆
And those podcasters are also always like "well if you're going to be a feminist and be delusional, forget your role in society then no man is gonna date you" YES, THATS THE WHOLE POINT ANDREW, I fear the day I became not delusional enough.
Ahahah you’re so close to getting the point ANDREW
I feel like we're so in the territory of a soft-dystopia that I believe delusion is the only road to happiness at this point

Despite your horrible, regretful experience on reality tv, for some reason every time you bring it up in videos I'm still so fascinated. We KNOW that reality TV isn't "real" and can be told so many times but hearing a first hand account never ceases to amaze me. Love you Kristen!
Thank you for being open and speaking the truth because I think that fame is quite toxic in many ways but we still glorify it.

Currently watching the 2nd season of the Bulgarian Bachelor, it truly gives me an ability to immerse myself into bg culture, while living abroad, currently in my fourth year of being away.
Also, I love how you are discussing a topic, in which you have some lived experience.
That’s so funny, watching the Greek Bachelor made me want to unimmerse myself from gr culture lololol oof
Where do you watch the Bulgarian Bachelor? I need to brush up on my Bulgarian :/
If you want a queer dating show, work at any bar or restaurant in Oakland, California 👀🏳️🌈

The outfit, the background, the lighting, the COLORS ! gorgeous

Married at first sight Australia is a bloody roller coaster of a watch. Highly recommend ❤
"share this video anywhere cause I don't have feelings" when she talks about how she got PTSD from the tv show earlier. love you, Kristen
I know! I can’t wait for it to come out! AND YOU WORKED ON THE SHOW!??? That’s sick! 😱
I wasn’t really into watching dating shows but I’m such a fangirl of yours and watch every single video, no matter what topic…so yeah now you really made me wanna watch dating shows 😂
Same here!
Same!
I prefer the phrase " life on my own terms"
We as a generation and consumers need to talk more about this topics
i LOVED the initial title of this! sad to see it gone :c
24:02 looking at where reality TV started in the UK that sounds like the whole point of reality TV generally.
i don't watch reality tv shows anymore bc im more into watching youtube videos or reading, I just love hearing you talk bc your voice is soothing and bc you're pretty and im gay
(Singling out queer eye because it’s reality TV that is blatantly abt the queer experience, but there is some other decent queer representation on various Netflix shows)
Also a vegan cooking competition… why hasn’t it happened yet?
The whole intro speel. 100% true and 100% agree. That’s literally the reason I started watching dating reality shows
there's a german tv show called "princess charming" that exclusively features women-identifying and nb contestants and a lesbian "bachelorette", its pretty cute and diverse
Dude, you're building your legacy right now. Your work here is your redemption. How you live your life is your redemption.
I’m 39 and I’m already feeling this …
As a 40 something who's trans femme & queer it's equally a problem so solidarity I guess 😂
Now that you're talking about reality tv , it reminds me about the time you were on my style rocks.
Rest in peace old title you will be missed
Ahahahah coming up with it gave me a chuckle- it will be missed 🥲
i need to know as well, i will not die in peace if I don't
I have this perception that reality TV is mostly only available on linear TV, but I guess that must be false or at least quite out of date. When I lived with my parents we didn't have commercial channels where these shows typically run, and after moving out I've never really watched linear TV. I guess I haven't really realised that these shows were available on streaming services since I never saw them while browsing around Netflix or HBO (or I didn't notice).
the *collosseum* comparison is on point, only the gladiators had somewhat of an equal chance. 💁🏽♀✨
also: i get the sentiment of justifying a queer 🏳🌈✌🏼 dating show to yourself because phobic joe on his couch needs to be educated. 😂
I need to see this study on gossiping being good for our health because I'll show it to Grandma when she says mind your damn business.
Love Your content!
such an interesting video! thank you!
Also the mtv dating show in the 1990’s, I don’t remember the name, with Jenny McCarty
« Most of everything is kinda trash » 😂😂 gosh i couldnt agree more
the irony of me watching this whilst drawing my dream partner
I used to watch The Bachelor/Bachelorette etc. but I quit after a few seasons because I was sick of getting invested in a show that has very few relationships that are successful and that last. Especially in the later seasons because people were just going on there most often to be on tv making it even less likely any relationship would actually genuinely develop and last. I don't watch any "reality" tv anymore because it is NOT reality and I'd rather see quality content with actors than bs not reality "reality" trash. A bunch of nobodies interacting with each other with none of it going anywhere.
raised hand. Also, check out Love Trip: Paris. Every one of the women is queer and it's beautiful.
🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️
Great video as always.
i recently started watching love island because of you and my coworkers
great vid as always!! dope topic.
surprised you didn’t mention the real world and laguna beach- trw inspired big brother, twas like the jersey shore format but earlier
and mtv/mtv 2 had next and a bunch of other stuff too, I think there was maybe one gay ep of next but yknow barely counts
bummer to hear your experience of being manipulated by the reality tv industry firsthand but now you have a really in-depth perspective of the situation!
reality shows are so inexpensive and profitable, idk why more queer dating shows don’t exist.
Netflix just announced a new show "The Ultimatum: Queer Love"
i really liked this video since it's related to your personal experience and all relevant points brought up. ignoring black women, fighting over the prized white girl. the problem is the way the guys are shown to try to get whomever they deem the trophy is not usually the way I would want to be treated either. also would love to see a queer one and it would be great even for people watching for the wrong reasons to be exposed to something different
Its called Princess Charming, but Im not sure if it has subtitles and its been canceled after 2 seasons due to a scandal.
my faves:
dating around>> unique variety of ages and orientations, no need to watch in any particular order, brazil > usa, (netflix)
twenty somethings >> slice of life, diverse, the joy of youth (netflix)
love trip paris (hulu) >> v queer, but the anti-blackness so palpable
terrace house >> slice of life, japanese culture, but so much contreversy (unaliving etc)
Further, i used to use reaity tv as a peek into whatever country i was watching for, and in a way i've idealized a lot of places, which is partially what i think US reality tv serves as well, in a subtler way since us propoganda is so pervasive .
But for the love of god, there is literally no bloody way you'll ever learn anything from smth that has been manipulated by a set of professionals to make everyone in that place seem either like a douche or better than they are
💯
Yes to the part on black women and their mistreatment on these dating shows! As a black woman, its frustrating to watch!
It would be great to have more queer representation in reality tv. I wouldn't want us made to look like fools exactly. But it feels like we really can't have anything. Considering when we do, its usually fictional shows and all the fictional shows that have queer couples end up being cancelled after a single season. The entertainment industry still has a long way to go in terms of representation with diversity, sexuality, etc.
I LOVE U KRISTEN !!!!
hey, nice to see you again.
29:56 agree but it cannot be just only Queer ppl … straight ppl the ppl that need to see the difference the most, wouldn’t bother watching it I feel, they would be wayyyyy more likely to watch if it was a mixture, and it would allow for the comparison.
Let the queer ppl into the mainstream dating shows asap
kristen te amo. which are your 3 fav reality shows?
Yes, queer representation would be good, but if these gaming shows are already treating straight participants inhumanely and manipulating them them they will do the same to lgbtq+ participants which will just lead to further misrepresentation.
Very sorry to hear about your traumatic experience!
I don't want to feel like a Roman plebe at the coliseum, so f reality TV (minis the few nice shows out there, wherever they may be)
Suddenly the couch snuggles and big reactions to fruit plates make sense!
👏🏼❤
You’re not being selfish for wanting queer representation you are being progressive and fighting for LGBTQIA+ representation. So u’re being AMAZING
Is it necessary to find "the one"? What if you like more than one person at a time? You wouldn't expect one friend to fulfill all your needs, so why expect your boyfriend to?
14:55 As a Finn I can tell you that the Nordic countries are not even close to egalatarian. Maybe compared to the Balkans, but still, absolutely not.
This is off topic but are we gonna get some sustainable clothes vids soon ?? I always love ur takes on it and style 😊
i am sorry to hear your trauma and humiliation you felt Kristen🥺 i am glad you got things into perspective and didn't do something stupid. that you are still here!! please don't ever hurt yourself. thank you for being strong, in the days where you felt weak💕
i am glad you share this. it was interesting to listen to. i always enjoy your videos.
KRISTEN! Have you seen First Dates on Channel 4? (On British tv)
oh this is another banger of a video
lmk if you need access to any of the academic articles on the topics you are looking at? i feel like you already may be reading them but just in case you don't already have access and would like to read some of it, gimme a shout i'd be happy to download things you wanna get your hands on
in germany there are queer reality shows "princess charming and prince charming"
Wow what did we do to deserve 2 videos in less than 2 weeks
Damn it, not to be creepy but a few years ago I spotted you walking with a friend along Dionysiou Areopagitou and I *almost* went up to you to tell you how I've admired you and your work for years but I was like "eh what if I DON'T descend on her like a hyena on this lovely afternoon" but if I had known then that you appreciate the attention for your channel I would have stopped you and then our relationship would've been 1/10000th less parasocial. 😆
