Nice to see mortar crews again. Was a mortarman in US Army in 1970's&'80's. Used the 107mm mortar at that time. The entire gun weighed about 350kg. Guess everybody uses the 120mm mortar now. Are the propellent charges in bags or sheets of explosive?
@@jhta3869 The propellant used on the M-30, 4.2-inch (107mm) mortar I worked on was sheets of explosive. They looked exactly like the cheese on hamburgers. This is how you counted charges, up to a maximum charge of 42. Charges were counted in 1/8th increments. Each square sheet had four corners. Each corner was 1/8th. So each sheet was 4/8ths. 4/8ths is reducible to 1/2. Two sheets sewn together was 8/8ths, or, a charge of 1. Ten sheets sewn together was 40/8ths, reducible to 5. Giving you a charge of 5. So you had a charge of: 5, 1, & ½ to work with. Say if your charge book said you needed a charge of 32-4/8ths charge. You stacked 6 each five packs, 2 each one packs, and, a single sheet to get the required charges needed on the tail spindle of the mortar shell. Then hang the shell, drop it, and get out of the way.

Finns are VERY tough fighters. Ask the Soviets about the Winter War. This was just basic practice. They aren't dug in at all. They would be very vulnerable to artillery fire.
I served 1994, in this exact situation, after the last round was fired we would scramble in and pick up the mortar. 60 seconds after the last round, there would be no mortars, no vehicles, no men, nothing at all. But you have two types of mortar units in finland, those who belong to artillery and they fire from fortified positions, and you have those that belong to jaeger units which will relocate after maximum 1 minute of firing from first to last round. We had 3 weeks of an artillery camp that felt as us being in a giant game of whack a mole, us being the moles and avoiding counterartillery.
These mortars may be oldschool but they are very mobile and it's possible to change location MANY TIMES per day, sometimes just minutes per place. It does however often require constant digging and prepping during the nights but the launchers are placed up to 8km away from their attack goal.

Itsellä saapumiserä II/87 samassa paikassa. Voitettiin sotilasläänin mestaruus heitinkisassa Sarriojärvellä. Päihitettiin PohPr:n, JääkPr:n ja KarJP:n krh-komppaniat nopeudella ja tulen tarkkuudella. Kapparit lupaili etukäteen valtavaa kasaa kuntoisuuslomia voitosta. Kolme niitä sitten saatiin. :(
120mm kranaatti ei ole mikään pelastusrengas tai defibrilaattori. Kaatuneista vihollisistakaan on ihan mahdotonta sanoa, että kuinka monta taistelijaa tai siviiliä he olisivat mahdollisesti surmanneet. Varusmieskoulutus ei ole mikään hengenpelastuskurssi, sen aikana opetetaan tappamaan.
They're holding it to keep count of fired shells (as you can easily feel when it's fired). In 2005 there were an accident where a shell was left unfired in the barrel, and a new one was loaded on top of it, because the tired mortar squad had lost count of fired shells. When the mortar loaded with two shells was fired, the shells exploded in the barrel resulting in the barrel exploding, killing one, seriously wounding two and lightly wounding four. This led to more careful handling of the 120 mm mortars in FDF.

Not flat, really, it is uneven and and an absolute paradise for a defending force, any ten meters direction from those guys and you have a small dump in the terrain allowing you to be completely covered, the trees hinder visibility greatly. Altough, the scarcity of trees in that clip is propably caused by live artillery fire exersizes, when i was there, i noticed that finding scrapnell was easier than finding rocks.

I did my conscription service in Finland in a southern unit which at that time was under land forces command. But we received really a multitasking training at that time. Now that brigade is with marines command, and two sons did their service there. Tell u what, pay a few visits to war crisis places, animals are the lesser concerns when sh.t happens. And yes, key words are guard, defend, this country have a long history of try confronting&prevent lie bullies trying whatever suits neighbor leadership "plan". ('f'in propaganda). If you'r smart enough, you know which region I refer to.
Finnish arty is considered one of the strongest in the world. Its is strongest in Europe and stronger than Russian artillery. Thats because of excellent training and amount artillery units.

Main propellant is in the tail and there is extra propellant for more distance in those blue sheets of gun powder.
The Finnish Defense Force uses both light 81 mm and heavy 120 mm mortars.

Vittu, jätkät sai ampuu kesällä noilla vehkeillä. Meil ment talveen ja ei ollu kivaa. II/99 ei unohdu.
