  • Today my daughter Abby came over to help in the sawmill. We had a little issue when Abby broke the sawmill, but we were able to get it fixed and get some work done! We are sawing with a woodmizer LT-40 sawmill.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Hi. I'm from the UK and have been a subscriber for some time. I worked on farms all my life and loved it. I started driving tractors in 1952/3 aged 7 and still do at times today aged 77. The tractors are much bigger and cleverer now. I just missed out on horses on the farm but enjoyed listening to my Dad and his friends talk about them. I enjoy your videos, keep them coming, Pleased Jim is recovering, God bless you all

So here are a few questions: do you do quarter sawn lumber? what type of wood are you sawing and selling? who are your customers, not by name but by type? do you saw hardwoods, walnut, sycamore, hickory, red and white oak, ash [if there is any without bugs], is all your lumber straight, flat sawn or on diagonals? how do you minimize the energy in a log as you are sawing it? do you have customers that drive long distances to buy your wood?

Hi there Abby, Trudy, Brenda and Jim. I'm just happy to watch your videos my dad who would have been 95 this year worked shires during the 2nd World War. Because of this I like to watch horses being worked, dad tod me that his two had to pull a tractor out of the river Browney one off the tributaries of the river Wear (weir) close to the confluence. It had gone in during the flooding and couldn't be recovered for about two weeks and was stuck in feet of mud. I am from the North East of England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿.

    Speaking of hasty moves:
Remember the video of your grand-daughters doing I don't recall which chores in the barn. It struk me how one was paced like Jim, and how the other was rushing all her moves. It struck me because I'm like this, I want to finish before I start, I had to learn to take the time that is required. I can't wait to take the next step, and too often. I don't apply myself enough to the step I'm doing at the moment. I smile often at how Jim calmly, pacefully do what he has to do, I like when he says "... I'm thankfull.." Instead of " ... darn thing.."
I'm so afraid to be late ... When I'll be on my deathbed, I don't think that i'll say "...Jeez, I should have been more often at the office.." " I should have saw more wood with less blade .." Only me can find if there's a God.

Love the sawmill vids. Nice set up Jim. Abby was looking a bit tired at the end, hard work with heavy green lumber. I remember helping my dad when I was young. He had a small mill with a rotary blade and the carriage moved back and forth. From Nova Scotia Canada, we went metric in the 80's but lumber is still standard old board feet and in inches.

I'm in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. I manage 2 acres near Beauchief Abbey which has history going back at least a thousand years, although it was out of use for 40 years. It's a tricky job because there are lots of people about with opinions.. the neighbour wants it looking like Chatsworth, the environment.group want habitat for bats and buzzards and the townie youth want to burn sofas and cook microwave meals on a bonfire. I have one cob pony, and wearing your t shirt really helps people get what I'm doing

Good One :-) , It always amazes me how careful Farmers are with those baler twine strings of rope. I got a good lecture from a farmer I worked for on how you can kill an animal or make it very sick by leaving a twine lone in their Manger. (Enstrangled intestine) Now whenever you strip a bale, I am always following you with my eyes to pick up the string, ah ha.(you do a good job, hang them up, in place) Important horse health. Let's say.. But Milking Cows also.. I can't believe how they smashed your fence!...Like my Mom used to say to us boys. .."You don't know your own strength!" Those horses, scarry strong. Yep, back off on the oats, ah ha. I think it's great Trudy and Abby to give you guys (Mom and Dad) a break.. One Farmer,.. I went and fed Cattle on Christmas Morning for him so he could be with his family for ONCE.
A morning off. I was so happy to do that for him, I threw a little too much silage down the shoot in the dark of the morning and had to dig myself out of the silo shaft ah ha, I just kind of laughed at myself swimming in good smelling spoilage, fermented silage (nice), Ronnie had the best crops.
Helping Out on the Farm is Precious.

Hi; from Tunbridge Vermont. I'm a custom band mill owner; that I built myself that will cot a 36 inch diameter by 21.5 foot log. As being cheap I have 1500 dollars invested. I also have a copy of a Cooks saw sharpener that cost me a bought $500. I saw your vide to the saw mill in Tupper lake earlier and enjoyed that 1 also.

Hello, from England. Love watching your dad's videos, Abby. Love the way you explained the lumber.. I think it's pretty much the same all over the world, just perhaps different measurements for some countries, like metric..
Good to watch you all work together and to see young people interested in such processes.
Jim was still smiling when Abby did a booboo.. and took it in his stride.. Lovely

I am in Iowa Abby and I have a manual 1220 Timberking sawmill. Your just like my children when they help - always telling me useless things about the cats when I'm trying to focus on the sawing. Haha. Thanks for helping your Pops. We appreciate our children.

Greetings from Green Bay Wisconsin, Mr Rodgers’ Neighborhood. My Grandpa had a small sawmill in the 1960s. His blade was a wheel with teeth. No guard! Cut at your own risk. The sawdust was rough but we cousins liked to play in the piles like a sandbox. Our moms would get so mad at us and make us hose down before we went in Grandma’s house. Fond memories!

Watching you all saw logs. How about a Log Sawing 101 class as in video? Jim, your experience counts for education. Never doubt your skills and what works for you. Because someone does it different does not mean either one is wrong.

I live 100 km NE of Toronto or about 300 km due west of you. In Ontario we use the Metric System for nearly everything but lumber. I assume this is because building plans all reference imperial units of measure. Not shocking when you consider that we still buy nails using the 'd' reference which evolved from Latin for penny.
