    It's amazing to see a guy on utube who is diligent and avoids false information. I have the same manual though it was used on a 64 corvan the phone company sold to the resort I worked at. The phone company put a door in the quarter panel the access the battery easily.

      I'm glad you enjoyed. I don't know everything, but I try to do the best I can. I've seen a lot of cobbled up crap on these cars over the years. They were odd, and cheap. People made them work however they could. This is unfortunate because they usually require quite a bit of sorting. Thanks for watching.

    Been there, done that and I didn't have the luxury of a shop, power tools or an engine stand. I did it in a gravel driveway and the porch of my mobile home. It was true shade tree mechanic style except for the machine work. I was a self taught mechanic. I say "was" because I'm now 84 and gave up working on vehicles several years ago. I don't even change oil these days.

    I would replace the rod bolt and nut with new ARP products. If a rod bolt or nut breaks it can cause some heavy damage.

      Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I don't recall how much I have in it, and I'm not sure I would talk about it anyway. These old cars are never really a financial win, and parts prices vary based on your location and availability. Sorry, can't help you on the cost. Check out the Corvair ranch if you want an idea of what a complete rebuilt engine is worth. Thanks again.

    Hello, I bought a Corvair, which I imported to France. Unfortunately the engine consumes a lot of oil, so I have to redo the engine, your videos will be very useful to me !!! thank you

    • @SlowCarFix
      @SlowCarFix  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Best of luck with your project. Where was it imported from?

    • @spirale05
      @spirale05 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello
      The vehicle arrived on the continent at the beginning of 2021. From 1964 to 2021 this car belonged to a gentleman in Florida (very nice). I was looking for car type MG and found this convertible in Florida. So I had it imported (sorry for those to whom this might shock). I didn’t know the Corvair, but I fell in love with an AMERICAN vehicle. I am therefore the second owner. It's a very clean and very healthy car. The engine was rebuilt in 2009, but today it uses a lot of oil. I know absolutely nothing in mechanics (French or American). Your videos will help me a lot !!!
      Unfortunately in France the Corvair is not very well known. For repair this engine, I only have your videos and those of other Corvair enthusiasts. Would it be possible to exchange private emails, asking for advice?
      Regards

    How did you measure the crank mains without splitting the block ?

    • @SlowCarFix
      @SlowCarFix  ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't measure the crank mains. I measured the crank where the rod bearings sit with a dividing caliper, and a vernier.

    • @notsogreat123
      @notsogreat123 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SlowCarFix Then you can't say the crank is fully in spec

    • @SlowCarFix
      @SlowCarFix  ปีที่แล้ว

      @notsogreat123 I didn't. I said what I measured was in spec. I have 5000 miles on this engine now and no issues.

    • @SlowCarFix
      @SlowCarFix  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Worn valve guides should absolutely be replaced.

    • @TheEDNC
      @TheEDNC 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SlowCarFix I did the same, but sadly the machine shop screwed up the job... the size & alloy they used were incorrect ... three came loose while bench testing the engine (modified 164 Spyder) blowing those cylinders.. it was a mess to say the least. Great vid BTW 👍

    Hello,
    Very nice video, very useful!!! Little question.
    Could you tell me the meaning of the gasket cylinder to block. Is it necessary to put a sealant type silicone? thank you for your answers

    • @SlowCarFix
      @SlowCarFix  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are base gaskets that go between each cylinder and block. They come in steel or copper, I believe. There is no silicone, these are metal gaskets. Hope that helps.

    • @SlowCarFix
      @SlowCarFix  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad you enjoyed it, part 2 is coming soon. The lower cylinder baffles are held on with retaining spring clips that clip on to the lower head studs. They have to be installed before the push rod tubes.

    If you were working on a motorcycle, You'd call that a "top end " rebuild. I'm hoping I can get away with that on my '62.

    • @SlowCarFix

      Agreed - I think it was the right choice for this car to not split the block. I wish I was that lucky with my '66 Corsa.
