As someone who loves George Orwell's 1984 and enjoyed the film version, I think it's hilariously ironic to see John Hurt as the evil dictator on a television screen.
ssfuk He loved Big Brother because he MIGHT be Big Brother himself he's just not aware (doublethink) *gasps in surprise* This might be a good conspiracy, I believe.
'Gentleman I want this terrorist found, and I want him to understand what terror really means." John Hurt did a very good performance in this film, you could feel that torturing his people, was not only something he didn't care for, but something he also felt pride in, like the sick, disgusting dictator he was.
Winston certainly made his way up the ranks in the party. From the middle class to the high! A feat rarely achieved. Room 101 served him well. O'Brian conducted his sanity. He loves Big Brother!
That s a man that you can't typecast. He nailed it as Winston in 1984 and he s nailing it here as a big brother-esque figure. He s played everything and you d be surprised in how many movies he s been and we might not recognize him. Real talent finest actor in my opinion
*V* is very much an answer to 1984. "Imagine a boot stomping on a human face forever." "You cannot kill an idea." - The very shape of the Party describes its own absence, and evil is by its nature incompetent.
Hilarious to realize that V actually already knows what terror really means...and knows it so much better than Sutler... ...which is a prime reason why Sutler loses.

At the end of this scene, Finch, the most morally conflicted character in the room, only says the latter part of the fascist state's official greeting. He is to V for Vendetta as Hans is to 'Allo 'Allo.
Here's a strange thing: V: Hugo Weaving best known as Agent Smith in The Matrix Chancellor Sutler: John Hurt who also played Winston Smith in 1984 How's that for irony?
Also, one played an international Nazi terrorist turned aid to intergalactic archvillain, the other played a being that went through time and space to stop the universe from descending into madness.
Gutted to hear about the passing of John Hurt, one of my all time favourite actors perhaps this being his best work. INCREDIBLE power in his performance. RIP.
(Mild spoilers for the graphic novel) The original dictator, Adam James Susan, was portrayed as more of a quixotic, opportunistic constable whose eccentricities lead him to be driven into a pathetic insanity by V. Sutler is written with much more gravity and dignity and John Hurt brings an air of genuine charisma and competence into the role. He's still arrogant, domineering, and fragile in his own way, but he's much more convincing as the mastermind behind Norsefire and sole ruler of a nation. Overall I'd say Susan is a more realistic dictator, but Sutler is a much more narratively satisfying character.
That moment when Oceania collapses only for Britain to get through twenty years of a failed democracy and then have Winston Smith go full circle with Norsefire
The Adam Sutler character kind of reminds me of "Big Brother" from "1984" which there was a adaptation of where John Hurt played the main role :) Kind of ironic

Thus, Sutler is only head of the government, and not the state. But given that the British monarchy has no real power, it's only a minor detail.
