Seems like a decent guy. Very confident bordering on cocky. But he obviously knew the business. Cube and Dre were kids and didn't know the business. Back then you had to have someone to know the business or else you had no chance at making it. You think 5 guys from Compton would have made it as big without some help in 1988? No internet, no chance that any record label would have taken them with their lyrics. I think the man deserves some damn respect.

Amen, I'm glad one person spoke up and didn't make it a racial thing. I feel its EXACTLY as you say. You see people make and lose fortunes on the regular, whether its sports or entertainment, the underlying theme you will hear from un-successful stories is they DIDN'T KNOW THE BUSINESS. By all accounts from what I can see, Eazy-E was no dummy and if Heller was such a devil he would have figured it out and dealt with it. He was hardly a punk. I tell my sons now all the time that you can't be so biased about people until you lose your objectivity especially when it comes to race. Might have been a different outcome if Eazy-E had only known somebody like a Baby Face. Well Eazy-E didn't have Baby Face, he had Jerry. The man obviously had vision others didn't have because most labels wouldn't even listen to them, nevermind do business with them. There is no sugary sweet scenario in the NWA story but this guy seems pretty genuine to me. In this day and age you better be able to get along with all kinds of people if you want change the world. I hated NWA, gansta rap and all it represented but as far as business goes its a great American success story in its own right. I think the business is cut throat and you ain't gonna find too many angels, no matter what you think about any of them. I can honestly say, I gained respect for Heller after reading and researching things for myself. I came out of the Straight Out of Compton movie looking at him like he was the devil himself but when you listen to other people who were around them during that time they had a high regard for him, including Eazy-E's family. I think their friendship was genuine AND it was about business.

Ogre He's a genius! They should be thankful to this jewish cool dude. Without him they'd be still livin broke in Compton! He made NWA possible. That's what they don't understand! Thank you Jerry for that!

jerry was definitely a huge help, but they woulda still "made it" without him...shid, he said it himself -- but definitely would'a been more of a grind B'n that they woulda been independent, but they still could'a made it wit or without jerry tho

I can't believe some people are dense enough to actually believe this man is innocent of screwing them over, contractually. When they vaguely state 'stealing' they're talking about his attempt at draining ridiculous amounts of money owed to them. Was it "illegal"? No. It was all a part of the bogus contract he tried to covertly get them to agree with, and sign. Jerry is fully aware of what they're talking about and what he's done. The man has a silver tongue that simple minds eat up without question.
No offense to you personally, just saying.

There are always multiple angles to every story. I really appreciated hearing Jerry Heller's point of view. We only ever heard Cube and Dre speak ill of Jerry. It painted a one-sided picture for sure. We gotta remember that Jerry was closer to Eazy than almost anyone else and Eazy never dissed the man (at least publicly). I do wish that Jerry would be open to reconciliation with Cube. Sure, Cube dissed him pretty hard, but that's common with rap records. In fact, you say some pretty f**ked up sh!t on them records. But real men can find a way around all that. Anyway, great interview series. Well done!

Who you know* eazy couldve sold 200,000 instead he got the machine and a person who can do more for the group than him. Only 1 nwa, and jerrys loyalty and interests made them international. Influential and revolutionary music with truth and hardcore lyrics. Public enemy with a twist of Ice-t and the leadership of a well connected manager was the formula. Death row used the same blueprint and dominated everything but Dr.Dre was the talent behind all of it.

***** Dangerous as in starting the gangster rap movement.
I'm 42 now so i remember how NWA changed rap from a political, conscious, fun to what you pretty much see now.
Sure, there were other street rappers before NWA but nothing quite like them during that period. I mean, they rapped about straight up violence with no helpful meaning to it.
After their success I noticed the KRS-1's and Public Enemies kinda fade off only to be replaced with Gangster rappers such as Spice 1, Mc Eiht The Ghetto Boys etc.

Such a thing shouldn't exist, if parents don't want their kids hearing those things, don't let them see or listen to it, don't fuck it up for all the rest of us so that we have to look around all over the place to find a version that hasn't been fucked up and edited, the shit is irritating as hell...

Wait hold up. Maybe I'm missing something here. In the interview, he said none of the members of the NWA were street guys. Then he said MC Ren was just as much as a street guy as Eazy-E. Why is Jerry contradicting himself?

The "truth" of NWA is a nebulous and shifting cloud floating within the middle ground at the intersection of the varying accounts of those who lived these events. Human's do not experience pure truth, truth is a word we give to our partial experience of reality - only God or some such being, abke to see every angle from every vantage understands truth. A person's perception of reality, may seem accurate and truthful but is skewed by that persons point of reference, vantage point and perspective, and more importantly their ego, bias and insecurities. i don't doubt that for the most part, everyone involved believes, for the most part that their account is reality. Jerry Heller's truth has ultimately been stretched and skewed by his position in society, his former business success and although he believes he has behaved with honesty and integrity, i don't believe he has the frame of thought to undsrstand the effect his actions have had on Black American communities. i wonder if he would promote these same values and ideals if they were from a segment of and delibered to his own Jewish community, also would he feel as positive about thw historical signifigance if it were a Black Man funding and profiting off the Jewish Community? Would he be as proud of what some would say has contributed to the a large amount of degradation and destruction of a culture, community and people - would he find this a worth wild venture for his back yard? i don't know but i have noticed that his overtly syrupy non-threating voice becomes ever more soft and passive and high pitched, as to not cause alarm, whenever he defends his actions or speaks of something confrontational. It reminds me of the seductive snake from the Jungle Book cartoon -- one can almost imagine the sachrine whisper in your ear as he slides the knife between your ribs.
