Lonzo Williams: Dre & Eazy Were Supposed to Co-Own Ruthless Records

  • www.vladtv.com - World Class Wreckin' Cru founder Alonzo Williams was one of the many N.W.A. affiliates depicted in the box office smash, "Straight Outta Compton." Unfortunately, he wasn't represented in the best light, but when asked about it, he's completely fine with that. "I had to be the bad guy in the movie so I'll wear that hat," he says during our interview. In this clip, Alonzo admits "a whole lot wasn't laid out" in the biopic, and he doesn't hesitate to reveal all.
    Alonzo claims Jerry Heller - who he still speaks with to this day - managed the Wreckin' Cru before N.W.A., a fact widely known to the public. An even smaller known fact is the original plans regarding Ruthless Records. According to Alonzo, Dr. Dre was supposed to be co-owner of the label "along with Arabian Prince and some other folks", but apparently the business deal never went through. "Last time I checked, Dre and Eazy was supposed to have owned Ruthless together - Jerry was representing Eazy from a management standpoint. And then allegedly Jerry became the part owner," he reveals. Some time later, Dre. reportedly left after "he realized he was getting pimped," says Williams, who also claims the now super-producer was only paid $20,000 an album.
    Williams also speaks on the group as a whole from a personal standpoint, calling them a "phenomenon of marketing." "Dre, Yella and Eazy? If they were in the room right now you'd never know they were here...'Til girls showed up. Then the peacocks blossomed," he adds with a laugh. When it comes to Eazy-E being off-beat, Alonzo says it's not just a rumor. "He had to punch in every single line - but he pulled it off. He eventually came off on-beat, but he didn't have the cadence down first. So he just kinda' winged his way through it," he details.
    Find out more from the Wreckin' Cru head as he talks N.W.A. and Michel'le. "Although I discovered Michel'le - I'm the reason why she got her voice heard to the world - her and Dre had become intimate and he convinced her to sign to Ruthless," Alonzo confesses, calling it "the straw that broke the camel's back."
    Press play for more.

    One krazy fact. Alot of people went thru Lonzo. Ice Cube, Dr. Dre., DJ Battlecat, Compton'sMost Wanted/MC Eiht, Kid Disater (K-Dee) . Even The Unknown DJ was mentored up under Lonzo in the pre West Coast days.. If you dint know all underground mixed records like Scratch Party 1,2,3..., Mix Trix 1,2,3....., etc. were thru Lonzo....

      From what i know Sug beat the shit outta Eazy in order to let Dre go from Ruthless, thats why Eazy wanted to kill Knight; there was no tough Dre either, i remember people telling stories of him crying to Sug just to let him go from Death Row. Dre beat a lot of bitches(mostly female lmao) but he lived a nightmare at DeathRow.

    • @tinnic
      @tinnic 9 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      +TheKillahAkASuperP No Biopic can be 100% accurate. If only because you have to condense many, many years into just a few hours. Also, the movie has to be entertaining and narratively sound. So I don't think anyone set out to bullshit the audience. But they probably did have to condense a few things and make certain characters a "composite" of general attitudes and stuff. Plus its not like these guys have been keeping silent. By the sounds of it, everybody has released a book and cashed in on N.W.A's fame/infamy long before the movie came out. The movie will serve as a good gateway for those truly interested to discover all these books, interviews, documentaries and get a fuller story, from multiple perspectives.

    • @ibrown3KC

      No shit. The movie was seriously Dr. Dre's fantasy of how shit went down. I remember the first time I saw "Straight Outta Compton," I immediately started to think/feel like the movie was basically "the history of NWA/Death Row/West Coast Gangsta Rap" according to Dr. Dre. Or, at least, the way Dre wished/wanted "The History" to look like. Then after listening to all these DJ Vlad interviews, it became pretty clear that my intuition was right.

    If you listen to the N.W.A and the Posse version of Boys In The Hood you can actually hear most of the spots where Eazy's vocals are "punched in." Most rappers can do an entire verse in one take. I can't imagine how laborious it had to be to record the song one bar at a time. But hey, Eazy had a very distinct voice and as history has shown, they made the right choice.

    Hmmm... I just happened to have read this part in Jerry Heller's book Ruthless just last night and Jerry tells the Marconi restaurant story different.. He said he had agreed with Eazy to rep him, and that was gonna be a full time job, so Jerry called all his talent to meet him at Morconi's and once there, he said... I am gonna rep Eazy and NWA, I can still rep you guys, so whoever wants to come with me, you are welcome. Some didn't and some did. Just sayin´ Jerry isn't around to defend himself, but his book is.

    I remember Dre said the exact same thing: he and Eric were suppose to own ruthless together but Jerry got in the way. I forgot what documentary Dre said that on. I think it was either behind the music or on Eazys documentary. I forgot tho but I do remember Dre saying that.

      That's such a shame cause Eazy and Dre were entrepreneurs, things could of gone so differently, the beef never would of happened, and the label would still be active today with Dre runnin' it, Heller never should of been in the picture, everybody would be paid the right way and fairly and there would of been no reason to start Death Row and let Suge exploit Dre again just like Heller did.

      He didn’t have those skills until he met Jimmy Evine and learned from him.
      Prior to that, Dre was irresponsible with money, blew it on parties, wasn’t showing up for work on time if at all and according to Alonzo, Dre still owes him money from 30 years ago and borrowed more than what he was supposed to be paid.

    This story is a complete contradiction to the movie Straight Outta Compton in the movie Jerry met easy at the place where easy was having NWA records pressed Jerry approached them not easy paying somebody almost $1,000 just to meet him but because Hollywood is Hollywood I have to say I tend to believe this gentleman before believing the Hollywood movie
