    I think maybe the colorful and lively descriptions of the past "light blue trees" and "glow lamps" juxtaposes with the dull and grim description for his present self: "ghastly" and "grey", to show how much he has changed and how hopeless, lifeless and melancholic he is now. Just how he had "lost his colour".
    Thank you for the video, by the way, it's super useful.

    "poured it down shell holes" - another way to think about it is that it's an active verb, not like his youth was "stolen" from him, but he himself made a choice to "pour" it away. It's like it's his own fault... not something that happened to him but something he did.

    In the 6th line, the metaphor "sleep has mothered them" is talking about how the children can gather at the end of a day filled with fun and go to bed whereas he cannot sleep and find peace in sleep. the use of "mothered" shows how the children can find peace and comfort in their sleep like a mother and away "from him" showing that he sees himself as a monster which children run away from to the comfort of their mothers or sleep, whereas his PTSD may have led to a lack of sleep/insomnia and therefore cannot feel the comfort of sleep and reiterates his misery, diabilities and insomnia.
    Therefore i disagree with the analysis of how sleep mothered HIM away from loneliness and from THEM at 6:06

    In the third line of the first stanza where it states 'sewn short at elbow' their is an omission of the word 'the' further emphasising his helpless, disabled state and mimics how his arm has been 'sewn short' hence the omission of 'the'

    I think another comment which can be made upon the language choice within the first stanza is the use of the 'ghost-like,' imagery, as you mentioned, to reflect his societal death. Contrasting with his later explored previous, jubilant life, the state in which he is now presented can be comparable of a social death for the period's typical young man. Could he already be in the 'dark,' he waits for?

    Could you please tell me what is the tragic irony of the poem Disabled?

    • @mrsrumsey
      @mrsrumsey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      You could say the tragic irony is that the boy went to war for the glory, yet he returned to the complete opposite by becoming an outcast from society.

    Maybe the repeating use of enjambment could also mirror his feelings that his life is just a long, long list of difficulties and simply stretches on indefinitely---in contrast to his wishes of yearning for oblivion and "dark".

    • @ss-hc7tb

      he is solemn and alone, sitting without hope. the voices of play connote cheerfulness and youthfulness, which contrasts deeply with his state emphasising his loss of such emotions.
