Many were jealous of it when running stove pipe drills. Just had to rack the slide without any extra effort. Sig P220 is definitely the Mercedes Benz of 45 autos.
A classic and never obsolete!!!!!!!! Especially with how smooth it shoots and how accurate it is!!!!! Love my P220!!!!!! And love the 45acp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even though this video is 9 years old thanks for sharing anyways!!!
I really like my Glocks but I also love the design of the P220 and its a classic that seems to never grow old. Sig makes fine, dependable pistols and the P220 is one of them.
This is a great video showcasing one of the finest pistols ever made - the Sig P220. One of my very favorites, have several of these in different variations, including an older West German model with a nickel slide, up to the P220 Equinox and Stainless Elite Carry. You know you are holding a high quality pistol when you have one of these in your grip. Thank you sir, and keep up the good work!
I've only owned two Sig .45s. My first was under the Browning Name as a BDA 45. I only let it go because I'm not a fan of the European style mag release. My current and long time owned Sig P220, was issued to and carried by a late good friend who carried it as Lt. Col and later Col. of Texas Department of Public Safety. He purchased it from the department and I carry it still as a LEO. It came in a cardboard box at the time. It's accurate, easy to shoot well, and very reliable so long as you keep a little grease on the rails. Oil will work but not as well as grease. These pistols do not like to run on dry rails and they will let you know. But, I still trust this pistol with my life even more than my ever dependable Glock 17 Gen 4. I trust it enough that even with fewer rounds doesn't worry me. I started in the revolver days and back then, was taught if you didn't win a gunfight in the first six rounds, you likely wouldn't win it with 12 more. Got to make them count and stay on top of your game to be proficient.
Nice video. I've been a fan of the P220 ever since I first put my hands on a Browning BDA almost 40 years ago. That was the name the gun was originally imported under in the U.S. You could get it back then in .45 ACP, 9mm, and .38 Super. The early ones were called Europeans because they had the magazine release down on the heel of the gun near the bottom of the magazine. Americans thought this was too slow, so the P220 American was born, with the release under the right thumb where we are used to it. For the first decade of production at least, the finish would rust while you watched. The current model is much improved on that score. The gun originally came with thin black hard plastic grips, and in .45 ACP had blue finish 7-round magazines. The 8 rounders came years later and were offered mostly in stainless. The P220's claim to fame back then was that it was super accurate (we used to say it shot like a rifle) and that it always worked, right out of the box with hollow points, which was something you could not say about your 1911 back then. In the 80's, our police qualification course had a 50 yard stage where you took 24 of your 60 total shots. This is when you really appreciated your P220's accuracy. But the downside to the gun was its high bore axis, such that in .45 it slowed down follow-up shots enough that the speed boys could not win in competition that used electronic timers. But, in a police holster, it ruled until Glock took over the LE market. Sigs were expensive, even to law enforcement, and the company could not compete on price. The world switched to plastic pistols, and everyone started to believe agencies could not qualify with anything bigger than a 9mm, and for a while, the .40 was the LE darling. But I trained many departments with the P220 and none of them were ever dissatisfied as long as they maintained them. I love the gun, and of all the .45's I have, it shoots right up there with a custom 1911 costing three times the price. Even at $1,000 these days, it's a bargain if you can appreciate it.
I bought a used two-tone P220 without the rail. Awesome pistol. It is now on my list of guns I would not sell/trade. Great gun regardless of the 8rd capacity. You are correct...those Ergo Grips are very nice.
Nice to see a classic in "new" ! Hold still my duty "Pistole 75" P220 as a former Swiss Army Senior NCO and after 25 years I still love the shape/design. Maybe I will buy this 45ACP if your review/opinion will be positive (my 9mm is still a masterpiece, so I do not necessary need another one, but who knows... a powerfull classic is a must have, as you said) Thanks for the vid!
Great to hear an authentic Swiss perspective on this fine Swiss design! Indeed, as I eluded - the P75, which became the P220 to us is the one that started it all. If you also have any experience with the P226 or similar 'double stack' versions, you might wait for my P220/P227 comparison - which is inevitable. :) Thanks again for the comment, and send me some hot chocolate!!

I just purchased a Sig Sauer P220S in .45acp caliber at a Gun Show. It has the Stainless Steel Slide and Stainless Steel Frame - also a stainless steel barrel. It has the regular SA/DA action. On the right side of the slide it says P220S - DE - and it also says Made in Germany. It has the Black Polymer Sig Grips with 2 screws on each side. The gun has the large rear beaver-tail and it has Black Adjustable Target Sights. The gun appears to be Brand New and Unfired - but the gun came in the Red Sig Plastic Box. Under the bottom foam is a manual which is stamped on the front cover stating that the gun was remanufactured. On the exterior of the red box - on the side - is a sticker stating that the gun was remanufactured in 2011. The gun also has checkering on the front of the grip handle. I am assuming that this is an Elite Model - but it doesn't say Elite anywhere on the gun. The gun is stamped "DE" on both the right side of the Frame and Slide. What does "DE" mean? I am assuming it means something Elite. I tried looking on-line and on Sig's web-site but I couldn't find anything resembling this gun with the Adjustable sights. The gun does Not have the Short Reset Trigger (SRT). The private owner at the Gun Show was giving me some story that he purchased it off a Gun Shop and they weren't supposed to sell it to him because it was a special Police Only Model - but I did not believe him. So what do I have??? What is it worth??? The seller was pretty stuck on his price - so I ended up paying $740.00 Cash out the door in May 2016 in Northeast Ohio. The gun came with 2 Genuine Sig Stainless 8-round magazines. He even threw in a Blackhawk Holster still in the packaging.
Many newer shooters and gun enthusiasts don't realize that the current obsession with capacity is a relatively new point of view. Of course we all want to maximize round count, but some would discount splendid firearms simply for lack of "high capacity". I learned how to insert a full magazine into a pistol years ago, so I hold no such taboo. :)

Why the 220? Because its an all metal frame da sa handgun and not some $1500 half plastic pos. If FN would just make the fnx 45 frame metal, keep the high price, it would be the ultimate 45.
I can carry the P220 SAS much easier than my S&W 4566, although that is a better built handgun IMO. If accuracy is the issue, nothing can beat the ole 1911.

Kept waiting for you to show the range test target. Guess they don't do that anymore.
I'm thinking about picking up a West German 220 with the rail.
TheLogitech91 they did not make railed West German guns. Sigs did not get rails for over a decade after West Germany ceased to exist.
Nice job I have just started to like SIGs
Still have mine .
just something about the way the light shadows dance on that pistols slide
Nice to watch a seven year old video in 2022 about a brand spanking new Sig Sauer... While looking at my trusty ten year old Sig P220. 🙂
Got my eye on a P220 Legion SAO when I get back stateside
Rob Kim
Get it. I have one and it’s amazing.
How does this compare to the HK 45C?
Great video. The P220 is a dependable workhorse. I've tried many other pistols over the years but none have been as reliable as this one. YMMV.
Mine runs like a clock as well.
what is he doing when he holds the gun up to the camera and the slide goes back? Is he disengaging the slide lock?
Nice pistol!
Every gun collection should have a P220 and P226.
Deffinitly one or the the other.
Great grouping.
Its super cool.
Should have spent the money and bought a legion. I love mine in sao
great review
Sig Sauer, please make a Size Large E2 Grip for people with big hands
Had a BRA 45. Browning. 1970.should have never sold it! Same gun!
.
The only 45 I like as much as the P220 is CZ97
Why the 220? Because its an all metal frame da sa handgun and not some $1500 half plastic pos. If FN would just make the fnx 45 frame metal, keep the high price, it would be the ultimate 45.
Beutiful piece. Enjoy.
Hey Justin, how do you feel about SIG ending production on the P220 Nitron?
I can carry the P220 SAS much easier than my S&W 4566, although that is a better built handgun IMO. If accuracy is the issue, nothing can beat the ole 1911.
I have the sig p250 an the sig p320 I like them both might have to get the p220
Why 45 calibre comes in less rounds? Like 8+1
I have one!! 😂 i haven't use it for atleast 5 years 😂😂😂
P220 is accurate n reliable
Prices
of course you're not a fanboy but your definitely a "FanMan."
Which do you prefer this or 227?
The P227 for sure. More capacity and more comfortable grip size.
I have a few simi autos i would gladly sell or trade for a couple of P220
for today's pistol, doesn't hold enough rounds. some pistols, glock? holds a double stack. like 16 bullets of firepower.
That gun is sexier than me.
Real "fanboys" always deny they are one and I am definitely not one of them...
Call me Sig fanboy anytime.
I hate the E2 grips
P220 45acp magazines hate hornady jhp ammo
Sig Assault rifle?
Didn’t know the AR platform was a assault rifle....
