Its still dirty as all hell in some places and you cant deny that. Also most western ladies dont like pooping or peeing in holes. As a guy its all good, I take it as a challenge. But its not all hunky dory. If youre blonde people will stare and think youre a freak and the daily smells range from sewer to raw sewage to tasty food place to urine filled side streets.

You need the Baidu Translate app! That's how I translated my air conditioning remote, my washing machine, screenshots of websites, menus, labels on products... Anything! Just take a photo and it translates for you. You can also have a Chinese person talk to it and it translates conversations. It's awesome, it's how I survive here! And yes, WeChat is indeed f-ing awesome...

Love your video! I was born and raised in China but have stayed in the US for 3 years. I feel sorry for those who are ignorant about the rest of the world than their home country, especially when it comes to American people holding biased opinions about China based on some biased bullshitting medias. China is country with good parts and bad parts, modernized places and underdeveloped places and places that you might think ghetto, but it's a generally awesome country worth visiting. Please keep uploading these awesome videos.

@@someshvemula9966 it could range vastly from USD20,000 - 500,000 in terms of annual income, including sallery, bonus, dividends etc. It actually depends on your skills, position and what company you work for. This is why the house price shoots skyhigh in Nanshan district of Shenzhen where most of the IT engineers are based.

Nice videos!!! I was born in Shenzhen and lived there for over 20 years. Now I'm living in San Diego. Your videos really make me homesick.
I'm not sure if you are still in Shenzhen. If so, I suggest you to visit OCT, it's like balboa park in SD. More importantly, just try some barbecue restaurants and bars at Shekou, Coastal City, or around Shenzhen University at the midnight. Barbecue seafoods and beers are the parts that I miss the most. If you are a fan of pop music, which I do, there will be a lot of free band shows (guitar, drum kit mostly) on the square in front of Shenzhen concert hall & library every Weekend's night. Natural scenes at Wutongshan and Shenzhen Bay are wonderful. It would be great to rent a bike and ride along Shenzhen Bay at nightfall. It feels like La Jolla Cove. No need to visit beaches in Shenzhen though, they are crowd and beaches in San Diego are way better .

hope you can keep up the positive energy while living in china, as it can get rough from time to time due to cultural and social standard differences with the West.

Those wires above are telecommunications cables. not that much voltage travels through them. Still don't touch them.

At 3:38, I think it is electrical wires, maybe like cable too. We saw that a lot in Beijing, Zhengzhou, and Guangzhou, electrical wires running everywhere on the outside of buildings. Still enjoying your videos. It was great when we visited China in 2014 and in February this year for two and a half weeks each time.

Hi, welcome to my hometown Shenzhen. My home is also in Nanshan, quite close to that 白石洲. I maybe able to answer your question about why there are places like 白石洲 within a modern city like Shenzhen. 白石洲 is one of those places we called 城中村 (meaning: village within a city), they usually have longer history than that of Shenzhen city, ie they exist before the founding of Shenzhen. Shenzhen as a city was found in 1980, the area where now Shenzhen lies on was just a vast farm land / jungle / fruit garden back then with small farm and fishing villages such as 白石洲 scattered around. Since Shenzhen urban area has been expanded so much, places like 白石洲 which were originally outside the urban area have now been engulfed and become 城中村.

I empathize with the apartment becoming waterlogged. I used a coin operated laundromat in Europe. What looked like a regular washing machine squirted dry cleaning chemicals over my clothing. I never figured how to get hot water out of the shower head. By accident I found if I let the water run for many, many, many minutes eventually the water would get hot.

Definitely, you can live in China on less than $2 a day if you wanted to it's a magical place. But like you said if you like you can live off a ton of money. You Should head out to Huizhou or Donguan. When you head to North Huizhou it's amazing. I get the celebrity feeling. The horns are everywhere. Even on cars. Chinese people are the friendliest people I have come across and if you know Chinese and talk to them they will treat you like family.

Baishizhou(白石洲) is what we called it 'a country town within the city'. Because the urbanization happens so rapidly in China and the city expands so fast that what once was rural now becomes part of the city overnight (well, over 3-5 yrs).
You should go to my hometown Guangzhou(广州) sometime (It's so close to Shenzhen!). It's a much larger city than Shenzhen, but at the same time, we have lot more historic buildings/districts since it has been one of the biggest cities in China for sometime (a century or so).

Poppy, you did not realize that you discovered the true meaning of life and that living in the way you are doing makes you more humana, rich and fortunate. You are a free spirit and feel happy because many can do not what you do.
    罂粟,你没有意识到你发现了真正的生活意义,而且生活在你所做的方式上,使你更加富有,富有和幸运。 你是一个自由的精神,感到快乐,因为许多人不能做你所做的。

lol, dont think those ppl living in poor area in Shenzhen are poor. THEY ARE MUCH RICHER THAN U THINK. they are all millionaires. Even the apartments in poor area in Shenzhen(like the area u filmed) are still worth millions dollars. I really like your videos. They are fairly objective and absolutely cool.

I've been living in shenzhen for almost 6 years, with an electrical door lock at my house, I can now just bring my phone out, and nothing else, no keys, no subway card(cuz we just had a new QR code scanner for subways installed), no cash cuz literally everything has a QR code, and coupons for everything on an app, free charging stations in the mall, or you can rent a power bank at any better restaurants, call an uber and pay online, or catch a taxi and pay by wechat. sooo yeah. welcome to shenzhen, china ;)

Baishizhou is one of those places we call "city villages". It's a place where people with lower income could only afford to live in since the average rent in Shenzhen is way too expensive to their wages.
