First do u recommend this setup or just a basic trail camera setup, also do I need two flashes, do I need to get a high quality flash and finally do I want like a broad lense or one more focused on a specific location, thanks so much for all the advice
No worries and I’m happy to help if I can.. there are a couple of major differences between a basic $50 TrailCam and a DSLR set up like in my video.. firstly a DSLR camera trap will allow you to take high resolution images of animals at night but you can only achieve this by providing light in the form of a flash (and yes.. you can use only one if necessary) a TrailCam however has much lower quality BUT it can shoot images and video by using a built in infra red light recording to an image sensor that is sensitive to IR light.. to achieve this in a regular camera you would have to have the camera sensor adapted by specialists. To answer your last question I would choose a wide angle lens. It all comes down to what you want to use the camera for.. if it is only to take a peek into the night time activity of animals without much concern over quality then I’d just set up a simple TrailCam for your school project.

Thanks for taking the time to comment Steve. I've actually had no issues at all with the rain or in fact snow using this set up all of last winter in quite extreme conditions as you can see in some later vids.. but point taken. In addition, not sealing off the front means the camera & lens acclimatize better to changing temperatures (in Northern Greece where I was shooting all winter temps can go from +12C in the day to -12C at night) meaning I have also not had any fogging, or steaming up of the lens nor any condensation build up in the housing itself. All the best.. g
Good point about the fogging. We've had some really torrential rain here in Queensland the past couple of weeks, which is why I want mine watertight. I plan on putting lots of silica gel in the box too.
Understandable..! I tend not to leave the kit out if it’s torrential truth be told as I don’t like the way the pics come out... the flash picks out the raindrops and you get a ton of little white hotspots in the frame.. unless of course you shoot without flash.. I keep a couple of sachets of silica in the box too.. 😃 cheers.. g
Depends on many factors.. most especially ambient temperatures and if batteries are rechargeable or single use.. I switch mine every 3/4/5 days before they die completely
Thanks Marijn.. and you are right.. it’s ok for the sensor which is very light but for the camera housing it is too flimsy for the weight and I will definitely be getting a more solid one once lockdown is over and I can start earning some money again.. all the best.. g
Brilliant videos George what flashes were used and how did you stop them going on standby and my second question what external trigger was you using to fire camera
Thank you so much Brent..! I’m using two Canon speedlites.. the 580EX & 550EX.. I let them go on standby otherwise they will drain the batteries very very quickly.. the sensor wakes them when it is triggered and they wake very quickly so no problems there.. the transmitter/receivers are also from Camtraptions.. I chose to get them along with the sensor to be 100% sure they would be compatible... hope that’s if some help..?! Very best wishes.. g
Thank you for your comment. Initially I didn't put one on because I filmed this during lockdown and I couldn't get hold of the filter size I wanted/needed for the size of the lens port. Since then however I have discovered that when I did add one later I had more instances of condensation and foggy images. So I removed it again. Touch wood I have never had any weather penetrate either the body or lens and I have never again had a foggy image.. which I think is down to the camera & lens being able to acclimatize better to the ambient temperature... ie. with the port open there is no temperature differential between inside the housing and the outside. I have also since added a hood over the lens port to protect the front element from rain drops. Hope that helps.
@@GeorgeSBlonsky Thank you so much! Everybody works with filters but I didn't really know if it's clever. Today I ordered a mm UV Filter. I've got a 110-100mm reduction pipe and the 105 would perfectecly fit in. But now I'm gonna think about it again. Some people say it helps against slugs and bugs. Did you ever have a problem with bugs or slugs?
Try it and see.. you can always remove it later and it definitely is the safer option. I've never had issues with slugs... but I have had ants invade the housing and also spiders sometimes take up residence.. no damage to the camera though.
I really like the way that you have constructed a housing for your Speedlights and you have inspired me to do something similar. The one thing that worries me is the stability of the tubes containing the flashguns once you have attached to drainpipe to a 7" magic arm via a 1/4" nut inside the drainpipe (is that righ?) - doesn't the weight of it tend to let it droop once articulated and set in place? Using the plastic drainpipe as a cover looks a lot better than using plastic bags for sure.
Thanks Alan.. it does require some firm tightening of the nut to be sure but has held for me so far without slippage every time I have put them out.. what helps of course is to position them if possible hanging down rather than extended sideways to reduce the leverage strain on the magic arm.. I’ve also been thinking of screwing a plate into the tubes to eliminate the possibility entirely because like you rightly suspect, they do work loose when removing and have to be re-tightened before putting them out again... hope of some help..! all the best.. g

Very best wishes.. g
@@GeorgeSBlonsky very much appreciated im on it and looking for parts i have 2x godox 860v2 so looking at comparability ect watch this space
Looking forward to see how you get on Brent ! All the best..! g
Don't you use a filter in front of your lens hole to protect the gear from humidity?
I’ve also been thinking of screwing a plate into the tubes to eliminate the possibility entirely because like you rightly suspect, they do work loose when removing and have to be re-tightened before putting them out again... hope of some help..! all the best.. g
Great stuff, I’ve just received my camtraptions items and you’re spot on about the manual, it seems a lot of reading is required, I’m looking for a simple programme to get me started. I like the look of the tripods, can you remember the name of them please? I did email camptraptions but got no reply so will buy from amazon and I like the look of the ones you have there
Hi Glenn and thank you for your comment..! I’m with you on the simple program which is why I chose to start with having wired link to camera.. the little pods I got on amazon are linked below.. they’re not the most solid but they’ll do the job.. I look forward to seeing how you get on..! All the best.. g... HITSLAM Mobile Phone Tripod, Mini... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07XG7ZH1N?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
George S Blonsky - GEO Pictorial brilliant, thank you very much, good luck and I will look forward to seeing your results with it 👍👍
thanks never seen that lol thankyou
No worries Mike..! I never mentioned it in the video and I only recently was able to set it up as I didn’t have enough subs yet.. hope it’s helpful ! All the best.. g
