Binkbeats: It's not about looping

  • For many music producers, a loop is often the starting point of a new composition. But how can you give a loop-based composition structure, add tension and release, and turn it into a performance? In this Ableton artist documentary we meet Binkbeats, a music-maker whose whole approach has grown out of answering these questions.

    1:58 Fun Fact.....the sample Madlib used for that Erykah Badu "The Healer" track was made originally by Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter’s dad, Daniel Bangalter aka Daniel Vanguard, who was a French disco producer in the 70’s. the track is Yamasuki "Kono Samourai" Peace!!!

    That shot of him walking into the room @7:00 was wonderful. Sure, he's got thousands of instruments, but they don't come to life without him. It's certainly the artist, not the gear. Awesome video.

    • @jonashuckphoto
      @jonashuckphoto 5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      It's the hardest thing as a musician to find a place where you can build your studio without angry neighbors or super expensive rent. We need more shared places for musicians and producers like that.

    • @koenbou
      @koenbou 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They have to move out at the end of this month but can't find a new space, such a shame.

    • @highhawk9632
      @highhawk9632 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Really? that's crazy. I was just thinking how great that such a space even exists. I feel that those kinda spaces could be even better then modern electronic music schools .Was this place a squat?

    • @koenbou
      @koenbou 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@highhawk9632 It's very sad cause I really agree with you. Spaces like this 'make' the city and should be supported more. In contrast to the music schools you see everywhere nowadays, these are actual spots for musicians to develop themselves and their music instead of making money teaching kids how to use Ableton.
      It used to be a squat way back, but has been bought and regulated for a long time now. In those days there was a music venue called Tivoli, which went through the whole proces of regulating the spot. When Tivoli moved out, Kyteman and a bunch of artists had to move out of their old location as well and were able to move in to this one. On a lease for an x amount of years. But now local municipality sold the building and they are gonna make a hotel out of it. So Kytopia has to move again, but till this day they still haven't found the right location.

    This is massively inspiring for me right now. I've been creating my own songs and beats on Garageband, and I could relate very much to what he said about getting too deep into the creating process forgetting what's going to happen next. Lately I've been very doubtful about creating music because it feels like no one will like it and suddenly I want to quit, but this guy has given me the inspiration to keep on going.

    • @do_happywork
      @do_happywork ปีที่แล้ว +1

      never forget, in the end the true artist must create for him'herself. If you make your happiness dependent on an audience or someone else's approval you will always be owned by someone else and your art will suffer as it will not be a reflection of who you are and what you hold inside, but what you think the world expects of you.

    Amazing! It feels like our vision is identical. Been looping since 2013 and all the practice and speculations on it up until now made me realise the same as you, it’s all about the musical freedom and expression rather than the fact that you loop. It’s about keeping the live feel as you also and make people feel connected to the craft as you also talk about.
    Thank you very much for this video 🙏🏼
