Make a quick detach mount for a winch on your trailer hitch.

- I managed to get my hands on this Traveller 4500 LB winch at the local pawn shop the other day. I figured it would be perfect for mounting to my trailer hitch receiver, in order move around the logs that I encounter for chainsaw milling. It went together surprisingly easy, and works great.

I am a retired certified welder here never weld all the way around a plate if a crack starts forming it will follow the weld right around in no time and fail just leave some small places where it's not welded if a crack does start it will stop at the spaces that are not welded that is correct way. But in this application I don't see it happening for many years if ever.
Very helpful this is exactly what I needed.
This gave me just the info I needed!! Thx
I'm building this right now, bought the ATV winch plate, will drill two holes (one exists) in the tubing and bolt it on with 3" Grade 8 5/8" bolts. This is for a 2500 pull ATV winch. No welding necessary. Consider what is holding it into the receiver - one 5/8 pin. That's it, just the one pin. Makes you think next time you are towing a 25 foot camper. Just the one pin.
Holy Moly Man. youtube Jodys welding tips and tricks.
“A little bit of warpage” he says. Lol. Blames the hackery on the Miller welder. Cmon man.
I just bought a Badland ZXR and I'm a cabinet maker, $289. I have a trailer and just finished making a square receiver for my 2003 Dodge Ram 1500, your idea is good. I'm laid off so have been out in the woods for a month making lumber with my chainsaw mill.
A grinder and paint make me the welder I aint. LOL
It calls for 2 gauge wire so I got 6 gauge which is half as thick...
I was hoping to see him pull some real weight with that to see if the paint would hold them welds together lol
Good ideea, i make for my suzuki vitara
Next time tack weld parts, then weld one inch welds in different locations allowing parts to cool. You could hit them with a water spray bottle to cool them faster.
Thanks
you only need a 5000LB winch to move a 5000LB car if your hoisting the car or if it is bogged down in mud/sand ETC. a 5000LB car will roll with only like 300LB of force. so that winch is plenty to pull most vehicles up on your trailer especially if you use a snatch block.
Maybe. I've got the FM for military field extraction and it's not the weight of the vehicle, its friction. Buried hub deep a truck could need more than the 9500 pounds my winch could exert, much less the duty cycle is so short I may need 30 minutes to cool. It's not the tires rolling forward, it's the crossmembers, axles, exhaust, even the bumpers plowing thru the mud. Rear bumpers are massive scoops digging in badly.
Moving a log ground level is exactly that - all friction, and that flat cut on the end bulldozing ground full of rocks and roots aint no fun. I lost a strap and a back window in my Cherokee learning that one. Had I lifted the nose 6" it would have been a no brainer. And no, as others mentioned, you can't always get a run at it and jerk it. Deep in the trees or in somebody's yard, two slots from your Mud Claws and locker might be all you achieve. Did that last week.
Watching videos you can see the "hack" is to get the vehicle to roll up onto the top of the muck and reduce friction, if it takes shoveling on your back for two hours to get it out from under the chassis, oh well.
Damn those welds are killing me lmfao. Nice project though.
It killed me too. Not the welder I was 20 years ago. I also realize sometime later that the polarity on the machine was reversed which is what made it so bad. But they have held up and not failed me yet.
Somebody needs to come up with one that works off the pto units on tractors or graden tractors such as deere 420s or more

Good video though! :)
Did u run a wires to ur battery
Could this be connected to the trailer connection to avoid having to run the wire all the way to the front of vehicle to connect to the battery?
I'm pretty there's way too much current needed for that. The wire harness for the trailer is delicate in comparison to the wiring for a typical winch.
There is a kit where you can add such a thing but as far as the trailer brake light hook up. Good lord no lol
@@ClandestineWoodwork i own an xterra/2009, would it be possible to run it with a good sized ac converter that plugs into the cig. lighter in my rear cig/lighter plug in the back?
No. You need a cable as thick as your middle finger to carry current.
Can you pick up the garbage on your yard with the winch??
funny, and your just being lazy, now do what ya wife said, and take out the garbage.....LOL
Welders whining is worse than the music. Nice work sir I'll build one similar. Cheers
Just dragging logs it's much faster to just pull it with the truck and a chain.
Too much long arcing hold the tip closer , the 175 is good , a lil pre heat will help it
I found out afterward that the polarity is reversed for technique I was using. I think I was using solid core with a gas shield, and the polarity was for flux core. World of difference once I fixed that.
your plate is bowed...you should put some stiffners on each side
I want to remake the entire piece when I have time. I realized after that I should have left the main bar longer and hung a clevis/shackle from it.
tời hay
Bro that bubble gum weld is no good
I realized afterward, that the polarity was reversed, and not correct for flux core. It's held up so far, but I want to make another, with a clevis included, and probably use 7014 for it.
I know this is an old video but I am a rookie fabricator and would be embarrassed to show this work.
Not trying to be harsh but educating yourself on basic welding, fabrication and electrical principals may save someone from being hurt or worse down the line.
Tune in next week, when we will be winching bags of cat shit across the yard.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
That cheap ass Harbor Freight cable is a BIG MISTAKE. Ever hear of voltage drop?
Yes.
The play is no good
