    47:04 Regarding your addiction comments - I've found the concepts expressed by "Moderation Management" to be extremely helpful for this. The way alcoholism is presented in our society is really toxic: you're completely fine until you're a bona fide alcoholic, in which case you must remain abstinent for life. This means that people with unhealthy relationships with alcohol don't seek out treatment until their habits have become destructive, for fear someone will tell them "you can never drink again". MM suggest periods of sobriety with careful introspection about motivations (sound familiar??) I think moderation is a wonderful and worthy goal. Enjoying something but knowing when to stop.

    While I appreciate your corporate ethics videos, as the year went on you seemed to enjoy doing them less and stressed about them more. The recent content you've put out has been so energized and excited and different, and I love it!

    I think the ads are for you to earn a little more for what you do. TH-cam has an ad free option we can pay for if we choose. Otherwise all your hard work and effort is free to us. I think we will survive ads. Those who may complain are just being selfish in my opinion. Again, all your work and effort is free to us. Free. TH-cam is free entertainment. A few ads isn't asking too much.

      All the yes to this!!!

    • @Dan_Chiron
      @Dan_Chiron 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Totally disagree. YT is *not* free entertainment if we have to watch ads, because that means the platform is monetized. The model consists in putting pressure on creators to sell YT advertisements in order to be paid for uploading their content; in everyday life that wouldn't make any sense: if I you create something that will give me profits, then I have to pay you, instead of saying 'Well, thank you for your stuff, now sell this and that to earn your money'.
      If the money from the ads went directly to the creators I wouldn't see it as a big issue, but that is not the case. Creators will earn a tiny percentage of the whole income. For you it doesn't mean too much 5 ads in a video? For YT it represents millions of dollars. That's the game.
      I believe there are more effective ways to support our favourite creators. For example, donating 1-10 dlls a month wouldn't mean too much for most of us; if a third of the suscribers did that, that would give the creator very good bucks. There's also merch, paid meet-n-greets, workshops, on line lectures, sponsorships... we are not obligated to do as YT want us to. We can bend the rules.

    • @korikayleen9818
      @korikayleen9818 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Dan GD you’re right, but that’s a whole different issue with TH-cam itself. if you have issues with the platform, that’s not Hannah’s fault or any creator. youtube is a massive money making monster, like the majority of big corporations. they exist to make money - this one also just happens to allow individuals a creative outlet.

    • @Dan_Chiron
      @Dan_Chiron 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@korikayleen9818 I know. As you can see, I'm not finger pointing at anyone. I'm just saying that, as a viewer, I'd feel more comfortable giving my money directly to Hannah (or any other content creator) instead of giving it to YT in the form of passive ad-watching. As a viewer I am willing to pay for the content itself, which is what reports value to my life. I think if some creator said 'Ok, I won't have ads, but please donate 50 cents per video' most people would go wild; but it's not a problem to pay YT 10 dlls a month for not watching ads. Why?
      Maybe I have this point of view because I also have a creative job (outside of YT) and, in my experience, the creator is in the lowest line of revenue charts, unless you're super famous or you're in a self-employment scheme. I believe as consumers we can change that a little bit; we're not going to "tear down the system", but we can help creators to get a more fair payment for their work. Maybe we all should consider that as an audience.

    • @BeautyNookbyLauren
      @BeautyNookbyLauren 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dan GD I don’t think it’s unreasonable for TH-cam to make profit off videos. They have created a system where individuals not hired by the company can host content they’ve created, get free advertisement from TH-cam for it (Hannah did not individually find all her subscribers herself or have to pay outside advertising costs), and have nearly complete freedom to create any kind of content they want, on any schedule they want. If Hannah or any other creator was posting videos on a self hosted website and we were discussing running ads verses asking for donations, that would be an entirely different discussion. Hannah does have an option to donate directly to the running of her channel, which I’m sure viewers have taken her up on, but I don’t think it’s fair to ask her not to take advantage of the built in system for payment on the platform she’s choosing to host her created content on. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    Your emotional transparency and eloquence is so refreshing, Hannah. It's been a pleasure watching your growth, your evolution, for the last year and a half. Everything, just everything (!!) can be a process, and it is what we make of it, what we choose to do with it. Perfectionism can be crippling. Allowing a bit of freedom, relaxing one's self-imposed regulations and moderating expectations, can bring JOY. I see joy in your face, eyes, smile. Feeling internal joy is so much more important than having everything 'just so'. Thank you for all you do.

    I highly encourage you to have a section that you pause yourself with regard to mid roll ads. That way you have a purposeful void for an ad to fill so that what you're saying or doing isn't cut off. Yes, letting go a bit is hard. I have struggled with that too. It's a lifestyle and psychological challenge and change.

    HANNAH! Firstly, you look mah-velous, dah-ling. Love the geometric print, your hair, bare eyes and the bold lip. Secondly, ads are not my fave, but you do what you gotta do. Thirdly, this was literally a therapy session. 😁 The letting go of control IS THE MEAT OF THE ISSUE. You know that spiritual journeys are rife with paradoxes. Letting go of control, trusting your heart, not your head, taking care of yourself, and being mindful of the journey is revealing to you your best version of yourself and what is not to love about that? Keep meditating, having gratitude, truly be kind to yourself, be open and present and enjoy the journey. That is enough. Acceptance. This really isn’t about the things. This is about you.
    A suggestion about the corporate ethics videos. They are full of all the things you are expressing in this video, which are important, surely, but heavy and full of details. Perhaps do one video per new corporate entity. Free up the structure to make a shorter video that can be focused, but deal with overall themes rather than picky details, except where it really is consequential.

    I think ads are the nature of TH-cam now, and I think what you bring to the platform absolutely has value. I think it’s worth sitting through an ad, and usually I feel like TH-cam ads are trying their darndest to be unbearably annoying. If I really can’t stand it I’ll go to the restroom, come back, and rewind what I missed. I think talking about how shopping and overshopping impulses impacted you in very detailed ways is so important. The dollar amounts, the cost to your personal space and what you’re able to use before it expires or in a lifetime, etc. - it’s all something I think most people are trying to laugh off or ignore or rationalize in their own lives, and looking at it (especially debt and hoarding) in a public space like this is so useful in the way that you do it. These reflections are valuable to the TH-cam beauty landscape, and I’m grateful that I’ve found them.

  • @kati_craig_

    The language you use to talk about your addiction to shopping reminds me of the language of eating disorders and food addiction issues. Certainly one must always eat, and similarly consumption of things is part of our human cultural experience. It’s definitely not like substance abuse - the physiological ramifications of those types of addictions cannot be moderated with budgets or arbitrary limits - but acquiring things can be so compelling that it feels that way.
    These types of long, deep-dives into your process are so helpful and interesting to me, so thank you for another compelling conversation. I only wish we could have these chats in person. I bet the collective ‘we’ could talk so late into the night that we’d close down the best speak-easy, tinkling our glasses of bubbly and regretting nothing the next day. ❤️

    I can't believe the timing of this - I went to bed last night and woke up this morning considering a no buy. I want to do it for financial reasons just to set rules for myself, but at the same time I'm in a similar place as you right now regarding makeup. I'm in the best place I've ever been - I'm not engaging in addictive/obsessive behaviors in the seeking, wanting or buying, and I'd describe the relationship with makeup rn as light, easy and casual. The weird thing is, I'm almost wondering if doing a no buy will make my relationship with makeup 'weird' again, just because it's the 'all or nothing' kind of mindset. I do believe heavily in moderation in all things in life and a healthy but balanced relationship with it, so I'm wondering if full deprivation will make it something to covet and lust after and spend hours researching again.

    I've also been trying to reel back the perfectionism with shopping/saving lately. I'm not on a strict budget/low-buy (as I have never really struggled with a shopping problem), but I am a full-time student who is simultaneously trying to save for grad school. I've always been conscious of spending my money wisely, but over the past year or so, I think I started taking the "fewer nicer things" mantra (we have that one in common!) to a bit of an extreme. I set the rule for myself that I had to have an item on my wish list for a while, periodically reassessing whether or not I still wanted it, before I could make the purchase. I distinctly remember going into Aritzia (with enough money to buy something without financial risk), spotting some beautiful pieces, but not even allowing myself to try them on because they weren't on my wish list. I still keep a wish list, and I think that the general rule of sticking to it and making conscious, premeditated purchases is good, but I'm realizing how much mental energy I have spent making those wish lists, analyzing them, tweaking them. Recently, I bought a couple of thrifted pieces either the day that I saw them or a couple of days later, and I found it really freeing. Moderation is a difficult line to walk when you're a perfectionist, but I'm practicing xx

    Hannah I was one to comment on your PR video about running another ad and I have to say I didn't even realize you started running them until you said something! That's how second nature they are "nowadays". It makes so much sense now that you say you have TH-cam premium. Ads have really become much more prevelant these last few years and I guess you just had no reason to realize. Bottom line you running another ad is not going to make it break it for someone to decide to keep watching your videos so you might as well make that coin! Also, I would LOVE to hear how you changing your ad structure changes (hopefully increases) your earnings. This is just out of a pure curiosity and sitting here cheering you on from the sidelines. I said this before, but you deserve to be compensated for your time just as much as anybody else. You make long form content and ads are a natural accomplice!! ❤️

    I haven’t finished the video yet but wanted to share my thoughts on the first half before I forgot them. 😅 I’m a huge fan of your corporate ethics series, it’s something I’m really interested in and I think you do a wonderful job with it. That being said, I’m a huge fan of your channel and I like all your other content just as much. So I’m basically going to be watching and loving anything you put out. 😋 I do think that you took on an enormous project that could probably be an entire channel on its own though, and I can absolutely see why you’re overwhelmed and stressed out by it. I think if you wanted to keep going on it without continuing in the same way - maybe you just choose one company you’ve purchased from in the month to talk about? Or maybe you focus on all the brands but only pick one or a couple things to look into. I chose about 4 years ago to start buying cruelty free products, that was one big change that’s taken years to research and feel comfortable with. Now I’m starting to tackle one or two other ethical issues. It’s okay to do something and not everything. I think that ties in with your statements on releasing control over perfection.
    About the ads - you have really good taste and I trust you’re not going to put midroll ads every 5 minutes of an hour long video. 😉 ads absolutely don’t bother me and I’m happy to support you through them. Like others have said, TH-cam has an option for paying to remove them. I’m more than happy to have ads included for the privilege of more Hannah content. Alright, on to watch the shopping part! (But before I do, thank you so much for all the extra content lately!! It has been so fun and inspiring. ❤️)

    I'm glad you're relaxing and easing up on yourself. You never seemed unnatural before but I think I do see a slight difference now, in a good way. It's nice to see you speaking in a more impromptu fashion. I do also enjoy seeing you put out more content now :)
    I don't mind at all if your regularly scheduled videos aren't put out un a specific order right at the beginning of the month. I appreciate the time and thought you put in to your videos examining ethical practices of companies you purchase from, however I do not mind if you combine a couple or a few months in to 1 video.
    I don't mind middle ads. I do find it kind of annoying it is excessive (3-5) times in a 15 min video. I think you're less likely to get the ad views on ads placed at the end unless people watch through to the very end and let the ad run. Often times I'll click on the next video to watch as you're blowing your kiss goodbye.

    I could write a novel here about the mental health effects of trying to be an ethical shopper and citizen. I have been doing the environmental and corporate responsibility thing for close to 30 years and about 10 years ago I had to take a step back and allow myself to “be gentle” and not so “judgey” as you say because of the impact it was having on my mental health. I still do what I can and try to be mindful, but it was just too much. I loved the pictures that you painted about standing up and forcing the demons away. I realized that I needed to be healthy first if I was going to have a healthy impact on my local and global environment. And I think that you are starting to get a glimpse of how heavy and depressing the corporate responsibility conversation can be. I encourage you to do a summary series at the end of the year. Keep track of your stuff, log it, record your thoughts and the process, but do a mini-series or a documentary (Shane Dawson style would be awesome!) of your journey and your findings. That is my recommendation. Even if you decide that it is too difficult and too depressing to continue...that too is a conclusion and a finding.

      Kristi Alexander this was such an insightful comment. I have tried in the past (and to the best of my abilities now) to be a conscious consumer but also fully believe that placing all the “weight”, as it were, of being environmentally responsible and the corporate responsibility on the consumer is such a gamble that only benefits the corporation. It takes an immense amount of effort and can definitely affect mental health because it’s like telling a single person it’s on them alone to save the planet, when the reality is that no matter to what extent a single person goes to be responsible for our environment and consumerism, the bulk of what needs to be done to address that falls in the arms of the corporations-which they’re not doing and will probably never do. That’d cost them money. It’s easier for them and governments to push the narrative of personal responsibility, no matter how much it really is a Sisyphus pushing a boulder up a mountain situation, than it is for govts to force corporations to address their waste.
      Which is not to say that we shouldn’t live with awareness and do our best, but also... the onus shouldn’t be on the person who forgot to recycle a bottle. It should be on that bottle maker and the environmental impact making that plastic bottle is creating to begin with.

  • @sarahwalden178

    First, this video was amazing. I found myself smiling and nodding and wanting to stop and take notes but not being able to tear myself away from the screen! I love what you said about strict adherence to particular kinds of rules, especially all or nothing kinds of rules, that can in a way just reinforce certain mindsets, but are still an important stepping stone to a healthier life. This is such a beautiful and nuanced way of looking at shopping and consumerism in particular. I went on a low buy in January, and it worked really well for awhile, but then I found myself obsessing over what to buy, saving items in case something better came along, all those behaviors that were hallmarks of my compulsive spending before the low-buy, just in a slightly different form. I knew I needed to give myself apace to evolve, so I ended the low buy one month early, did go through a couple of bumpy spending months, but am emerging with a much more relaxed way of thinking about spending. I’m buying less than I have in previous summers (time off of work is a shopping trigger for me), and enjoying the things I have more. I am going to budget during the year to keep myself in check, but I feel so much more relaxed now that I did when I spent too much or when I was on my low buy. But as you said, those weren’t mistakes-they were necessary to get to this point. And this point feels really good. I can walk into a store, see that there’s nothing I want or need, and leave without searching for something to want. If I find something I want I enjoy the process of thinking critically about it, not as a punishment, but as a way to preserve the joy I find in the things I already have. And if I decide that item is worth it, I buy it without worrying about what else I cannot buy, or if that was the right thing to do. And now, whenever I do this, I’ll think of you standing tall, facing your demons, and buying your maybelline lipsticks. I’m so glad they’ve brought you such joy.
    I feel like so many of my comments end this way, but thank you. You are doing such good work in the world. I’m glad you’re taking care of yourself.

    Hey Hannah, first of all I would like to thank you for putting up so much FREE content for us lately! I don’t think you should limit yourself in terms of ads, and the middle ones are fine for me. I love the thought of a creative person being compensated for their work, so if that helps, do it!
    Regarding your corporate ethics videos: I love them, I find your research methods to be admirable and I enjoy finding out more about the brands I purchase from. However, if you find that you don’t want to do them anymore, I think that is completely fine, too. You don’t owe us anything.
    I am very much looking forward to seeing the may update if you want to finish your research but if you’re not in the mood for it, don’t do it.

    I've been trying to overcome my own perfectionism this past month, as well... That feeling of punishing yourself as a means to the desired end is incredibly relatable. The unnatural stress-inducing feeling that comes with letting go, because it's so foreign. It's definitely hard to manage! But you've had such a great deal of success & I hope mine will come soon -- it will happen when it happens, so long as I make it a point to continue working on myself. I love you, too. I do very much enjoy your videos for your thoughtfulness. I started getting into make-up in May (completely out of the blue for me). Dropping $80 on make-up a month when I had previously spent $0 has been a challenge to figure out my feelings on. Especially when I also worry if this is just a phase and I'm going to get bored of it in a few months, possibly resulting in hundreds of dollars of product sitting in a box collecting dust. Watching you and Angelica, and Abby Williamson and countless others on the platform has helped me SO MUCH. In fact it was Natalie Wynn in one of her Contrapoints videos on Beauty who made me realize that sitting down and doing make-up is a ritual that gives me the opportunity to rewire my brain after my year-long recovery from depression. So as someone who is on a journey of recovery as well, thank you

    Well... ads... I don't like the idea, tbh. I don't have issues with ads at the start/ending of the video, but middle ads are really annoying and here's my explanation.
    When a platform starts including publicity, they do it slowly, so viewers don't see it coming, and that can get to abusive practices.
    I'll give you an example: in my country, public TV has around 3 min of commercials for 2 min of content (even when the private companies that run public TV recieve governmental support, aka money from taxes and some other benefits); ok, what does consumer do? Goes to paid TV; at first, no ads, and after a few years, a ratio of around 2min ads/10 min content. Is it preferable than public TV? Yes. But we're supposed yo be paying for no ads and companies find the way, which is, audience is used to it, so they won't find it weird.
    Now, TH-cam. Same story. No ads at first and slowly going up and up. Unless we pay for it (for how long will it stay 0 ads? We don't know).
    We're a captive audience, and corps know it: Of course we want to watch X, Y or Z and we want to support them, so we'll take the ads... That's a "Take on the whole market, then increase the prices" strategy. Very sneaky.
    I'd totally prefer you did more sponsored content, as you've always be transparent about it. I'd also prefer your own commercial of your Patreon account, a 1 dll donation marathon... Any way the money gets to your pocket instead of having to share it with YT (and getting the smallest slice of the cake). Like Google needs more money.
    Sorry for the essay lol. Big hug!

    • @boatlessboozecruise3440
      @boatlessboozecruise3440 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Totally agree on that. I'd rather give my money directly to a YTer via some kind of sponsorship that having to 'watch' those same ads in every single video. I always skip the ads, so the YTer doesn't benefit from putting in the ad anyway. Fight the system by promoting your patreon, or whatever, in your videos rather than getting a fraction of YTs ad revenues for every ad consumed by your viewers. In my opinion it's a healthier approach than feeding this big a** company that is benefiting from all the creators content for free; talking about ethics of companies and such...

    Hannah: I'm an inconsistent commenter, but after watching the end of this video, I have to at least make the effort to say how much I love and appreciate your channel. I watch every single video and read most of the comments when I can. Since TH-cam is video, it "moves" - movies literally come from the word "movement." So setting rules (you're a huge inspiration to me for sticking to them) is important, but change is inevitable, and differences in periods of our lives are so fascinating, and doubly so when you have the self-awareness to reflect on them. It sounds like your stress manifests in your traps? Mine does, too! Massage is great for it, as well as applying heat, and pressing the tight spot in a downward motion for about 30 seconds at a time to break things up. Hope that helps

I relate to a lot of the things you have mentioned that relates to me about my shopping habits. I have been watching you for three months and I have only bought one piece of makeup. I bought Samantha March's highlighter collab. I really wanted to support her and I could afford it this month. I have been going to library and getting books and reading them. Personally I wish there were no ads in the middle of the videos I watch, but I have no control over it and just live with it, but sometimes annoyed because they don't always happen at the right moments because it can be midsentence and you get interrupted from listening to the person you are watching. You mentioned the pressure you put on yourself to make it that last tiny bit more perfect, and how many of us have mentioned we couldn't really tell the difference, and that reminds me of something Hank Green once said. He talked about how his secret to productivity was to do everything 80%, because largely, that last 20% is where you spend the most time trying to make it perfect, you often don't know exactly what perfect is, and often, we all have different definitions of perfect. Letting something into the world at 80% means you can start working on the next thing, and you can take feedback, and make your next 80% be better.

    Good personal example of being "hard on yourself, but not too hard on yourself": I was on a no-buy July to reorient my focus for spending. Samantha March came out with a new highlighter with Ofra. My only highlighter had significant pan--I'll finish it in the next month or two. I didn't let myself feel bad. Yes, I broke my no-buy, but I don't feel guilty. I needed to replace a highlighter, and I got to support Samantha. What's to feel guilty about? That was the only purchase I made during my no-buy so I honestly consider it a success!

    Been having similar feelings these past two months about shopping - of course, with the restriction of a small budget you want to make sure to spend it in a smart way, for things you really want. But I can get a tad obsessive with needing to hunt down the best thing, spending endless amounts of time and energy comparing stuff and thinking which of the many things that have caught my eye will be the most worth it - and that's, as you pointed out, still not a healthy relationship with stuff, I'm still obsessing over the next new thing all the time. So I need to keep reminding myself that getting new stuff will never quench the thirst for new stuff (thanks for preaching that to us all) and especially with beautiful things like makeup and clothes, no matter how pretty a picture I've painted in my head around this new thing I want, it will always remain just stuff. I will never find an eyeshadow that forever fulfills my need for new eyeshadow, and no pretty skirt will ever be the be all end all of skirts. So it's okay to sometimes buy a thing that I just like and that fulfills it's purpose, it doesn't have to be perfect. Sure, after I buy this there will at some point be another thing that I also want, but I'm slowly, very slowly, learning to be happier with the things that I chose and not constantly fretting over the fact that there might have been better choices.

    Middle ads are so standard now that I doubt most people would mind! I had noticed you didn't use them because I'd gotten so used to them for long videos. I couldn't imagine you bombarding us with ads every minute, I am sure you'd place them intentionally so that it didn't make the video difficult to watch or irritating. We're here to support you, and if a few extra ads are part of that effort, we'll still be here.

    Thank you for sharing about the heaviness of being restrictive about your possessions. I've been actively culminating minimalism for a few years now, and I've slowly become aware that there are times when it helps me make choices that are freeing and calming, but other times when I use it to punish myself and feel guilty for not being willing to live with even less. I asked my mom once, do you think it is possible to live without any bad habits, and she said yes, but then your bad habit would be that obsession with perfectionism. I try to keep that in mind when I feel myself being restrictive in a negative way.
    Also, saying the same sentence 5 times over and then picking the best one sounds a lot like writing! I can see why that would be your initial approach to TH-cam, but I'm glad you are finding new ways to approach your content that brings you more lightness.
    And put in mid-roll ads. You are allowed to get paid =)

    Honestly I don’t care for the corporate ethics videos very much. I also think it’s better for youtubers to create favourites and empties videos in a more organic fashion rather than on a prescribed schedule. Especially favourites, because in real life, “favourites” don’t really come and go on a monthly schedule. I appreciate a consistent monthly check-in, but other than that, I think the best content that you can make for your channel is the content that you are in the mood to film. It definitely comes across in the videos. It’s just not as satisfying to watch someone when you can tell they are stressed/bored/dreading their own content.

    Anything that helps your channel is fine with me. Ads help you with some money, and when a person really likes a youtuber, the ads, pr and sponsored content, makes the person happy because that means growth in the youtube world.
    I really love your videos. So it makes me so happy for you to get pr, sponsors and all the things!! You deserve that and much more!!😘

    I have no idea why people would want to see middle adds... Seriously ads in general are one of the most annoying things on youtube.
    Cheers for Angelica and her her good influence :)
    BTW, you look sooooo 60's in this video! It suits you a lot :)

    It's SO HARD to balance the creative with the work research stuff - I totally relate to this. Love what you do and I support glitter bonanzas :) xoxo

    Hi Hannah, Thank you for your content that you bring. I don’t have a no buy year, but I had a no buy June! I felt empowered because I was away for the month of June, on holidays, and able to go to places like Sephora and an Australian place called Mecca, and I bought so much stuff. Even things like clothes at outlet stores, I hate to think about how much money i spent. The no-buy June made me really stop and think about my purchasing and using habits, and since then I’ve done shop my stash and I’m only buying replacements. July, I really only bought 3 products, a new mascara (because they dry out so quickly, I’ve learned not to have 5 open at once), a replacement primer and a sponge! I’ve really stood back and thought about what I need as opposed to what I want and it’s really helped.

    Thank you for this video. My obsession is food. Your journey has taught me a lot about myself.
