I already kind of broke my mini no buy for the end of the year. I saw that JD Glow had restocked Unexpected and I ordered it. I knew if I waited for it to go on sale at the end of the week it would be gone. I got it and it looks great, but now that I have it in my hot little hand there is that moment of being like, yeah I could have lived without it.

Another tip that stopped me from buying a few things yesterday : if you really want something that has been out there for a while, try to search for detailed reviews. We often want things because we imagine that these things possess certain qualities that in reality they do not. I've watched videos with people using my desired items and swatching the makeup I wanted and I realized that these items are not special at all. These things are just okay, just ordinary stuff, similar to what I already own. And when I realized this, the desire was gone. I ordered stretching stand to ease my back pain instead.
Hannah, I would love one of your free-range posts on the topic of gifts -- not so much the consumerism, but your philosophy, how your experiences giving/getting gifts has shaped you, great gifts you've given and received .... wherever you want to go with it. I LOVE giving gifts, and it always takes me aback for a moment how miserable it is for some people, often based on past experiences. And obviously gifts don't have to be a thing you spend a ton on, or even something you bought at all (like the gift of time or assistance.)

Yes-“Revel in what you own” is my favorite tip here! I love to just grab my eyeshadow palettes and highlighters and glitters and look at them and swatch them and remember how magical they are. :)

This video is especially helpful for me, as my birthday almost always falls on BlackFriday/Cyber Monday, so the impulse to “buy myself a sweetie” is even stronger. I let myself buy some things, typically things I know I won’t receive as gifts that I’ve been wanting for a long time, but combining extreme sales with incessant marketing with a really rough year with a big birthday (40!) that I won’t get to share with my friends because of COVID is really making this a tough year not to shop with abandon. Even though I know I’llbe buying some things, one of my favorite strategies is “comparison wishing,” where I think of the thing I most want, and every item I see come through my inbox as being on “such a good sale!” I compare to that thing I most want. If it doesn’t measure up, I put it out of my mind. This has been far easier than I expected, honestly. And I have the peace of mind of knowing that I’ve allowed myself some indulgences but I’ve carefully considered them to make sure they’re as special as I want them to be. Happy Thanksgiving, and thank you for helping to get us all through this year with such grace and joy.

Black Friday always freaks me out..: if I want to make a pretty expensive purchase I think about if for at least a week before I commit to it... with Black Friday I usually don’t have that sort of time to reflect on if I really need and want it.. I like when brands release their sales for the week or weekend rather than just the one day.

This is so helpful! I haven't really sat down to budget these kinds of things in the past and have definitely overspent on makeup (mostly just makeup), so I'm going to start doing this process going forward (starting today!) so that I can keep track of and stick to a budget for myself as well as appreciate what I already own.

I love the reading concept. Although I am not a reader, I would instead journal. I love journaling but as a busy wife and mother I don’t have the time I used to have when I was younger. :) just wanted to suggest it to those who may not be readers but love journaling. :) you have great ideas! I will schedule a time this Sunday to play with makeup and organize my clothes. :D I also find doing acrylic nails at home and doing a face mask is very indulgent for me bc admittedly I don’t mask weekly (again due to lack of time) so for me it is an indulgence to do so. :D thanks for the tips! My version of this is wash allllll my makeup brushes. Then pull out all my make up re-organize it and wipe down whatever I’m going to put back on my vanity. That normally sedate my I want that I saw it on TV self.

Great tips. I've realized in March and April that two of my essential things need to be replaces and have been limping through the year telling myself no until black Friday for one item and cyber Monday for the other. Even though I'm buying myself planned things my inner toddler is like no we want a treat too. Just saying no is easier than buying something, fighting myself for a couple days, and then buying another planned thing. If I could just buy them both the same day it would be easier, but now I'll plan the middle

Absolutely! There is nothing more effective to get me not to do something than someone telling me to do that thing. Just ask my husband. "Nu-uh, I'm not listening to you!" *Fingers in ears* This is also my inner child now that I think about it... Trying to work on that one too 🤣🤣👀👀
A swatching game I love: I love to do palette bingo with swatches. Just like all the palette bingo tutorials, I use a random number generator, swatch the colors it chooses, then take a photo of the palette with those swatches. That way, the next time I’m doing my makeup, I can look back through those photos of color combinations I might not have thought of myself and it makes me use my makeup in new ways. Even in the moment of swatching, it makes me see that palette or my singles in a new light, and I realize I’ve only scratched the surface of their potential.
There weren't many things I wanted, but they all didn't even go on sale! Aimlessly browsing websites full of makeup and clothing, and even utilities I'm trying to get myself excited about, just because they're on sale (and I'm a student who can't afford much of anything with a clear conscience), was just off-putting and exhausting. I ended up talking myself out of the ND Mini Gold palette and opted for buying the Hot Jalapeño Elf one just to see if green even suits me. I'm just dipping my toes in this effervescent pool of beautiful things and your videos have been really helpful in terms of learning how to negotiate with the toddler in my head instead of trying to pay no attention to their desires and ending up with a temper tantrum.
For me black friday is really the only time in year when I buy makeup so it's always super exciting for me! But you're right it's really easy to go overboard with it... This year I decided to make an order from yesstyle that's max. 100€. As they already have their sales up I made the order. I'm finally going to try out the VDL lumilayer primer and got some cream cheeks and lip products! I always use so much time when online shopping to make sure I want it, how it would feel like to have the thing in my life and deciding what's the best shade for me etc. so it's kind of tiring but also SO MUCH FUN! I've also decided to buy one roen quad and CT highlighter if they go on sale (but if they don't I'll leave it to next year) and buy some magnetic palettes as well but that's all. Hardest thing atm is resisting colourpop lmao. Why is their marketing so damn pretty?? Also that look is smoking.
I´ve bought what I wanted , now it is time to just have a look and just admire the beautiful things on sale from the distance. I prefer to save for things I really want and not buying small things here and there just because they are on sale. Btw, playing with our own things is an amazing idea! I love it too combining palettes, combining lipsticks, combing clothes with my accessories and just having fun n.n
Great tips, I needed this because I've been perusing the pre Black Friday online deals and I'm feeling the urge. One of the ways I've resisted is just allowing myself to peruse the site, add things to basket and then to logoff without making the order. Most of the time the urge fades away and if I look at the basket again, it's almost like I'm out of the trance because it's so much easier to go ' I don't need any of that and how could I fathom spending that much more on cosmetics when I already have so much??' That time away from the computer and coming back makes you clearly see the insanity of it all. It's just the trance of capitalism. Be strong everyone.
I've bought quite a few things during these sales, but they were all things I've had on my wish list for a while, as replacements, "wardrobe completion items," or gifts, that I knew I was going to get eventually and wanted to hold out on in case I could get a discount.
I've wanted the VB Lid Lustre in Mink since it came out and I almost bought it the other day when the VB site started their sale. But then I went through and watched all my shadows that I think of the same way and I have so many incredible ones! I still really want it but I'm going to stay strong and pass on it.
A thing I always look forward to on Black Friday is getting a ridiculous fancy coffee while I’m out and about , but instead I could try to replicate my fave at home. I’m on a no buy this month, so I’m just putting my head down and working on Black Friday

My best strategy for not shopping on black friday is to work in retail during; there's nothing that will put you off shopping more than working during black friday. I did end up putting in a sephora order for cleanser, lip balm and concealer which are all things I'm running out of and picked up and extra shift at work to compensate. I think I did quite well 😁
There is a single multichrome from Devinah Cosmetics that I spent so much time researching, and I would have already bought it since it was in my budget except it isn't in stock until tomorrow. And I still might not get it, because we have a family policy that we never shop on Thanksgiving day, and that's when she is restocking. And that's okay. I will not die waiting for that multichrome eyeshadow. This year I am getting much better at waiting for what I want, and trying to be better at giving myself what I need instead. Because when I am impulse shopping, it usually means I am trying to compensate for something I need and am not getting.
I am feeling kind of blah about shopping right now, which is fortunate. I was tempted by the Colourpop's vaults, but they have so many repeating shades, I know I most likely have them already. Both Ulta and Sephora sales aren't really sales... I will probably get a couple of sweeties from Bdellium tools. I love their make up brushes, and get a couple during every big sale. But otherwise, I feel kind of blah about this year's shopping. I guess it's the mood of the year, haha. But with the great sales, I have a chance to get things I really need, like replenish my loose leaf tea stash, and get an air fryer lid for my instant pot. That would be much better than buying more eyeshadows.

I find it helpful to put everything that I want in my cart and then check if it is on sale. My indulgence is Sephora so the sale must be more than 20% off. I set a budget and don't add too many things. If none of the items that I want are on sale than I wont get anything. Mostly just want the ND camel palette.
Although I’ve bought a few planned things in the pre Black Friday sales, when it comes to the day I’ve been telling myself I’m going to see. I know what I want for myself and others and on the day I’m going to see if the discount is any good. If it isn’t, I don’t *have* to buy them Friday, I could buy them any time. If it’s a gift it will need to be before Christmas but if it’s for me I could buy it in 2021, or never but I’m going to see and if the discount isn’t steep enough I’m not going to do it. Weirdly that’s taken some of the pressure off

I haven't really sat down to budget these kinds of things in the past and have definitely overspent on makeup (mostly just makeup), so I'm going to start doing this process going forward (starting today!) so that I can keep track of and stick to a budget for myself as well as appreciate what I already own.

I love the reading concept. Although I am not a reader, I would instead journal. I love journaling but as a busy wife and mother I don’t have the time I used to have when I was younger. :) just wanted to suggest it to those who may not be readers but love journaling. :) you have great ideas! I will schedule a time this Sunday to play with makeup and organize my clothes. :D I also find doing acrylic nails at home and doing a face mask is very indulgent for me bc admittedly I don’t mask weekly (again due to lack of time) so for me it is an indulgence to do so. :D thanks for the tips! Black Friday has never been a temptation b.c I never liked the business at the physical stores. Cyber Monday is what always gets me!

This video could not be more well timed! I committed to not buying any more makeup for the rest of the year, but all the discounts and sales are really tempting... I wanna spend my money on gifts this holiday, which will bring me more joy and it's my love language. The trouble is not to overspend on gifts too 😂

Great tips. I've realized in March and April that two of my essential things need to be replaces and have been limping through the year telling myself no until black Friday for one item and cyber Monday for the other. Even though I'm buying myself planned things my inner toddler is like no we want a treat too. Just saying no is easier than buying something, fighting myself for a couple days, and then buying another planned thing. If I could just buy them both the same day it would be easier, but now I'll plan the middle

I’m working Black Friday which makes it easier to avoid sales. I have a few things I have planned to purchase, mainly my cleanser that goes on sale every year, I buy two bottles and it lasts me until the next sale!

I LOVE swatching all my own stuff! Especially eye toppers! Trying to only buy gifts Black Friday so maybe I’ll do some swatching!
A swatching game I love: I love to do palette bingo with swatches. Just like all the palette bingo tutorials, I use a random number generator, swatch the colors it chooses, then take a photo of the palette with those swatches. That way, the next time I’m doing my makeup, I can look back through those photos of color combinations I might not have thought of myself and it makes me use my makeup in new ways. Even in the moment of swatching, it makes me see that palette or my singles in a new light, and I realize I’ve only scratched the surface of their potential.
There weren't many things I wanted, but they all didn't even go on sale! Aimlessly browsing websites full of makeup and clothing, and even utilities I'm trying to get myself excited about, just because they're on sale (and I'm a student who can't afford much of anything with a clear conscience), was just off-putting and exhausting. I ended up talking myself out of the ND Mini Gold palette and opted for buying the Hot Jalapeño Elf one just to see if green even suits me. I'm just dipping my toes in this effervescent pool of beautiful things and your videos have been really helpful in terms of learning how to negotiate with the toddler in my head instead of trying to pay no attention to their desires and ending up with a temper tantrum.

For me black friday is really the only time in year when I buy makeup so it's always super exciting for me! But you're right it's really easy to go overboard with it... This year I decided to make an order from yesstyle that's max. 100€. As they already have their sales up I made the order. I'm finally going to try out the VDL lumilayer primer and got some cream cheeks and lip products! I always use so much time when online shopping to make sure I want it, how it would feel like to have the thing in my life and deciding what's the best shade for me etc. so it's kind of tiring but also SO MUCH FUN! I've also decided to buy one roen quad and CT highlighter if they go on sale (but if they don't I'll leave it to next year) and buy some magnetic palettes as well but that's all. Hardest thing atm is resisting colourpop lmao. Why is their marketing so damn pretty??

I´ve bought what I wanted , now it is time to just have a look and just admire the beautiful things on sale from the distance. I prefer to save for things I really want and not buying small things here and there just because they are on sale. Btw, playing with our own things is an amazing idea! I love it too combining palettes, combining lipsticks, combing clothes with my accessories and just having fun n.n

Great tips, I needed this because I've been perusing the pre Black Friday online deals and I'm feeling the urge. One of the ways I've resisted is just allowing myself to peruse the site, add things to basket and then to logoff without making the order. Most of the time the urge fades away and if I look at the basket again, it's almost like I'm out of the trance because it's so much easier to go ' I don't need any of that and how could I fathom spending that much more on cosmetics when I already have so much??' That time away from the computer and coming back makes you clearly see the insanity of it all. It's just the trance of capitalism. Be strong everyone.
I do this all the time, too! "out of the trance" is such a great way to talk about it.
I've bought quite a few things during these sales, but they were all things I've had on my wish list for a while, as replacements, "wardrobe completion items," or gifts, that I knew I was going to get eventually and wanted to hold out on in case I could get a discount.

A thing I always look forward to on Black Friday is getting a ridiculous fancy coffee while I’m out and about , but instead I could try to replicate my fave at home. I’m on a no buy this month, so I’m just putting my head down and working on Black Friday

My best strategy for not shopping on black friday is to work in retail during; there's nothing that will put you off shopping more than working during black friday. I did end up putting in a sephora order for cleanser, lip balm and concealer which are all things I'm running out of and picked up and extra shift at work to compensate. I think I did quite well 😁
There is a single multichrome from Devinah Cosmetics that I spent so much time researching, and I would have already bought it since it was in my budget except it isn't in stock until tomorrow. And I still might not get it, because we have a family policy that we never shop on Thanksgiving day, and that's when she is restocking. And that's okay. I will not die waiting for that multichrome eyeshadow. This year I am getting much better at waiting for what I want, and trying to be better at giving myself what I need instead. Because when I am impulse shopping, it usually means I am trying to compensate for something I need and am not getting.

I am feeling kind of blah about shopping right now, which is fortunate. I was tempted by the Colourpop's vaults, but they have so many repeating shades, I know I most likely have them already. Both Ulta and Sephora sales aren't really sales... I will probably get a couple of sweeties from Bdellium tools. I love their make up brushes, and get a couple during every big sale. But otherwise, I feel kind of blah about this year's shopping. I guess it's the mood of the year, haha. But with the great sales, I have a chance to get things I really need, like replenish my loose leaf tea stash, and get an air fryer lid for my instant pot. That would be much better than buying more eyeshadows.

I find it helpful to put everything that I want in my cart and then check if it is on sale. My indulgence is Sephora so the sale must be more than 20% off. I set a budget and don't add too many things. If none of the items that I want are on sale than I wont get anything. Mostly just want the ND camel palette.
Although I’ve bought a few planned things in the pre Black Friday sales, when it comes to the day I’ve been telling myself I’m going to see. I know what I want for myself and others and on the day I’m going to see if the discount is any good.
If it isn’t, I don’t *have* to buy them Friday, I could buy them any time. If it’s a gift it will need to be before Christmas but if it’s for me I could buy it in 2021, or never but I’m going to see and if the discount isn’t steep enough I’m not going to do it. Weirdly that’s taken some of the pressure off
One thing I'm in the midst of doing is unsubscribing to email notifications from all my favorite stores. I can re sub later if I want to!
