I am in Alor Setar right now and the city absolutely surprised me positively. I came here with no expectations at all, but the vibe of the city is just so nice, and it actually has a lot of interesting places to see like the Menara Alor Setar, the Rumah Merdeka, the Rumah Mahathir (my favorite place in this city actually, and it seemed you skipped it so you have to go back to Alor Setar) and the Masijid Zahir is absolutely gorgeous. But most importantly the people are so kind and friendly, even multiple locals gave me rides to places I wanted to see, so I didnt need a Grab. This never happened to me in any other Malaysian city. I absolutely love this city. Also I wanna give a shoutout to Wokman Bakery, their baked goods are extremely delicious and really cheap at the same time. I just wish they did something about all the stray dogs in the city center, it‘s too much of them.

Most tourists especially westerners that came to Malaysia are looking for the party/nightlife. Hence, places such as alor setar, taiping, balik pulau, muar or even sungai petani will not be on their travel itinerary.

@@VeggiesOnTour Most Malaysians usually go to the East Coast of Peninsula Malaysia for their pristine islands and experiencing the cultural heritage there. The State of Pahang and Terengganu has a lot to offer if you're into nature and elephants. It's a lot different than the West Coast in terms of architecture, accents and foods. I can't suggest any since I myself have not explore the other towns in the East Coast except the main towns and islands.
@@VeggiesOnTour the east coast gem is definitely beautiful tropical islands, Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Redang..recommend you stay few days at Kuala Terengganu, explore the town n then go to Pulau Kapas, only 20 minutes boat ride 👌

@@VeggiesOnTour My suggestion you can start with Kota Bharu, Kelantan. You also can just google the vegetarian restaurant at Kelantan. Even if you don't googled, I bet you can also easily find many vegetarian choice offered there. For example Nasi Kerabu which is specialized identic food of Kelantan. "Kerabu" is like "the mixed pieces of variety vege" so it is a must try, then it will be mixed on the special blue rice to be called Nasi Kerabu. You can add on "lada solok" for side dish. It is a choice to add chicken or fish for side dish but the basic of nasi kerabu is not necessary to have that. It is an option so you can choose lada solok for vegetarian option.
Alor Setar is a fantastic place. I used to live in Kuala Nerang when I was a teenager in the 90s because my dad worked there as an agricultural officer. So, I often go to Alor Setar to do shopping or find delicious food. Although I am not a Kedahan, people in Kedah either in Kuala Nerang or Alor Setar, they were always friendly to me and my family.
Perlis is nice and quiet, very country side. If you have seen Yuna's song Forevermore you can see some of Perlis in the backdrop of her music video. If you like Kampung Life pls visit Perlis. There is also a Night Market in Alor Star....behind the Pacific Mall. If I am not mistaken it is called Pasar Malam Pacific on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Used to live there years ago.
when u come to Kedah, u should ask for nasi ulam (veggie rice) we Kedahan called it nasi Kerabu, our nasi ulam is different from nasi kerabu Kelantan...
there belacan and ikan masin there, he is full veggie, we can drop the two ingredients but it's not taste the same.. maybe we can use other plant base umami flavor

If you in Alor Setar, surely you will aware of Gunung Jerai or Kedah Peak. On southern side of Gunung Jerai, located Sungai Batu Archeological site, the birth site of Kedah since 700 BC. Sungai Batu at Bujang Valley, besides Merbok River is the capital of Old Kedah-Langkasuka Kingdom since 700 BC and also the Royal City for the Kingdom of Srivijaya. On modern era, Kedah Airport is the first international airport in Malaysia where in 1924, the airstrip was the staging airport for KLM East Indies route from Amsterdam to Batavia (Jakarta). During World War II, town of Jitra, 10 km north of Alor Setar was the first line of defence for the British military, the 11th Indian Division to face the invading Japanese Imperial Army moved from Singgora, Thailand to Singapore.
Any Malaysias like me who have never visited Kedah? The closest Kedah experience I had was passing through Kedah on the train from Butterworth to Bangkok 20+ years ago. 😂
Hi there when back to KL do check out this temple along Jalan Ampang proximate to KLCC, there's a vegetarian kinda economy mixed rice behind the temple...have u visited this eatery place? if not check it out😁
Alor Setar (used to be spelled Alor Star during British colonial times), my home town. I was raised here though I was born in Sik (a remote part of Kedah on Thai-Malaysia border). I was schooled here from age 7 until I was 17, at 18 I moved to KL-Selangor for further education, and then on to the US. Places like Masjid Zahir, Balai Besar, the Town Squrae, China Town (Pekan China), Pekan Rabu etc used to be childhood playgrounds. I now reside in Selangor but always visit my mom, siblings and other relatives in Alor Setar, Kedah. Many people told me Alor Setar is the most boring town in Malaysia, nothing to do here. It didn't hurt me, I accepted it. If they think my hometown is boring, then it is to them. But Alor Setar is never boring to me, it was my home, still is. Btw, you should try Nasi Ulam (Herbal Rice). one of Kedah specialties. 20 types of herbs shredded and mixed raw with white rice plus the seasonings. You should visit SAHC (Sultan Abdul hamid College), Kedah's first and oldest English-language secondary school, my school too, most of Kedah dignitaries, including royal family, received their early education here.
Have you been to Merbok? It is where it all started! Kedah Tua , literally means OLD KEDAH. It was once a bustling port, producing among the best iron of all times, and even exported them to Europe! The history id very rich, and you can visit the archaeology site/s in Merbok. You will be blown away with the history facts. Merbok also offers beautiful mangrove sites, being taken care by some government agencies. You can experience the boat house along the Merbok river @ Houseboat Bakau Hijau and eat fresh oysters! Breed by the locals at the houseboat! Bakau Hijau means Green Mangrove. If you are still in Kedah, you ought to go to Merbok. Oh yes, we have a candi in Merbok! Candi is like a temple, like the ones in Bali. These temples were built probably by the early Hindus. Merbok is amazingly interesting....no regrets! ENJOY KEDAH!
Hi guys 👋🏽, been watching some of your videos from London 😂. May I suggest you try tosai or idlli if you have not tried it ( South Indian cuisine usually for breakfast but can be eaten any time of the day). It’s yummy vegetarian and healthier option than roti canai. Please visit Taiping where I’m from as it has amazing street food and beautiful lake gardens. Have fun guys
Maybe you should do a comparison between Malaysian and Thai cities. Compare Alor Setar to Hat Yai. Penang to Phuket. Ipoh to Hua Hin. KL to Bangkok. Johor Bahru to Chiang Mai. Melaka to Ayuthaya. It would be interesting.
Kedah and Perlis more to country side vibe.. Not all tourist suite to that but malaysian very love place like that.. Kuala Lumpur, penang and johore, putrajaya and labuan suit for big city.. Selangor , melaka, pahang and perak you can find mixed vibe but in Sabah, Sarawak, Kelantan, terenganu, kedah and Perlis its more colorful for me because its more closed to nature and country side of experience For tourist, penang is a food heaven.. But for me country side is the best food in the country
Ahh, already been - during Covid. Remember? We've done most of Perak now! Ipoh, KK, Taiping, Teluk Intan, Gopeng, Papan, Kampar, Sitiawan, Tronoh, Lumut, Pangkor all completed!
Oh ok. I have to look back to refresh the memory. Its so good of both of you to promote the local unvisited towns with their heritage. It makes me want to come back Malaysia and visit these places.
Kedah is nice for its countryside vibe and views, and for its cheap cheap food. But since you two are vegetarians, it's a bit hard to recommend food stuff. Idk if you take milk and eggs or not. Some do, some don't. If you do take eggs, and I've seen you do like _roti canai,_ then you must try _roti sarang burung_ that is wayyy more delicious than _roti canai._ Another thing you must try is traditional malay _ulam-ulam_ together with its dip. _Ulam_ is traditional malay side dishes of raw greens, or sometimes blanched, eaten with their respective dips. Examples of popular raw greens: _ulam raja_ (most popular), _timun_ (cucumber, sliced) Examples of popular blanched greens: _bendi_ (okra), _pucuk ubi_ (cassava leaves), _pucuk betik_ (papaya leaves) The traditional dips: _sambal belacan_ (fermented shrimp paste), _sambal tempoyak_ (fermented durian paste), _kicap cili potong_ (cut chillis in soy sauce), _air asam_ (tamarind juice). Sometimes when we have _kuah kacang,_ the peanut sauce for satay or _nasi impit_ (rice cakes), this can also be a dip for the _ulam_ (the indonesians specifically have this combination in their _gado gado_ and we do not want to _gaduh_ too much with our neighbors, so we're okay with it hehe). But for us these are side dishes accompanying our main meal of white rice plus the main protein dish. The challenge is to recommend to you that protein dish which has to be non animal, and I could only think of _tauhu_ (beancurd) or javanese malay's _tempe_ (wafer thin fermented soy bean). Good luck exploring, have fun and stay safe! 👍

Dont forget Gunung Keriang and Paddy Museum @ Muzium Padi ..its a nice place too ...
Any Malaysias like me who have never visited Kedah? The closest Kedah experience I had was passing through Kedah on the train from Butterworth to Bangkok 20+ years ago. 😂
Very good recoding good
Even under the leadership of Sanusi Nor, Alor Setar is still charming... 😇
Mt Gunung jerai, tembengau seafood seaview, hotspring lenggong, candi merbuk, merdeka beach, etc is a must in your next trip ya

Oooo this is great.. away from KL and Penang… while u r in Kedah.. find time to visit places like Gunung Jerai, Yan and maybe Sik … 👍👏👏👏👏👏
Hi there when back to KL do check out this temple along Jalan Ampang proximate to KLCC, there's a vegetarian kinda economy mixed rice behind the temple...have u visited this eatery place? if not check it out😁
Wait until you reach Perlis😉
In native Kedahan style, try saying Alor Setar as Alor Setaq (similar pronunciation as the word "stuck")
Lock Stuck is the right pronunciation for Alor Setar in Kedah Malay dialect.
wow Salam di Malaysia
Nice place..😘😘
Kedah is also called The Rice Bowl of Malaysia
should also check out the birth house of 4th Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir in Alor Setar...
By the way, don't say "Anwar Ibrahim" in that house or it might get hot... Just kidding!
Well, least you get to travel to every different state ,city and discover new things along the way. ...Take care out there,,, Catch ya later mate
As a Kedahan, I'm really glad that you're enjoying Alor Setar. Just FYI, the city is known to the locals as are-lock stuck 😆
They even have H&M and Uniqlo!
NEXT STOP ....PERLIS
Thanks for going to Alur Setar as I was born there in 1957.
Alor Star is a unique Malayan-times' name for a state capital.
1940s and 50s pictures are reflective.
Perlis is beautiful too
try visit Kodiang after this.
Kedah and Perlis more to country side vibe.. Not all tourist suite to that but malaysian very love place like that.. Kuala Lumpur, penang and johore, putrajaya and labuan suit for big city.. Selangor , melaka, pahang and perak you can find mixed vibe but in Sabah, Sarawak, Kelantan, terenganu, kedah and Perlis its more colorful for me because its more closed to nature and country side of experience
For tourist, penang is a food heaven.. But for me country side is the best food in the country
Hope both of you had enjoyed the trip to Alor Star..
Should visit towns like Taiping in perak state. Its amazing
Haha you definitely need to make that trip! Good to have you back onboard it’s been a while! 🙏🏻
@@VeggiesOnTour 😆😆👍👍
@@VeggiesOnTour when will you guys be back England? Its warming up here😁
Bro go again to pekan rabu and buy KUIH BAHULU and CUCUR PENERAM..i always come over from Penang to Alor Star just to buy them
Alor setar is my hometown. Currently I working in KL but ur video make me want to going home!
Alor Setar is more exciting than KL! Kl has too many skyscrapers now, ity‘s lost the traditional feel a bit ..
Kedah is nice for its countryside vibe and views, and for its cheap cheap food. But since you two are vegetarians, it's a bit hard to recommend food stuff. Idk if you take milk and eggs or not. Some do, some don't. If you do take eggs, and I've seen you do like _roti canai,_ then you must try _roti sarang burung_ that is wayyy more delicious than _roti canai._
Another thing you must try is traditional malay _ulam-ulam_ together with its dip. _Ulam_ is traditional malay side dishes of raw greens, or sometimes blanched, eaten with their respective dips. Examples of popular raw greens: _ulam raja_ (most popular), _timun_ (cucumber, sliced)
Examples of popular blanched greens: _bendi_ (okra), _pucuk ubi_ (cassava leaves), _pucuk betik_ (papaya leaves)
The traditional dips: _sambal belacan_ (fermented shrimp paste), _sambal tempoyak_ (fermented durian paste), _kicap cili potong_ (cut chillis in soy sauce), _air asam_ (tamarind juice).
ohsem commented ever..👍👍
👍😃🙏
Thank you for sharing your experiences and perspectives. Which hotels do your recommend in Alor Setar, Kedah?
Oooh Alor Setar Kedah - we stayed at Hotel Samila! Very central and very nice for the price
There’re several vegetarian restaurants & non vegetarian restaurants that can cook special food for vegetarians
i think you are quite ready to explore Perlis...
We were indeed!
East coast will shock ya'll 🤣
Here's a slogan.. Kedah: The Alor Setar State
(like: Texas: The Lone Star State 😁)
👎 Boring la tiru2, buat completely different dari orang lain la biar original dan unique baru la gempak
Kedah: Hang Mai Aloq Staq... (Sila Sambung)
Nice association!
Kedah
Will you guys go to Sabah?
Hi may i know among all the state town in Malaysia which one is the most clean and interesting one ? Including the toilet cleanliness .
Anche il fiumi sembra teh tarik..haha

Ha! Not been yet?
FYI its pronounced as Alor Star with the silent 'e'.
nope..its depends to individual fluent..im from Alor Setar and usually said Aloq Setaq or Alor Setar
Going to roots, it's Alor Star.
Going by a miss here and there, it's Alok Sta.
Kedah 🗿👍🏻
kedah is one of the oldest kingdoms on earth with cambodia.
in fact cambodia, kedah, aceh in sumatra, the philippines, east indonesia, and oceania are culturally and historically linked.
tunku abdul rahman, father of malaysian independence and first prime minister, is the greatest kedahan.
Still waiting suhanjaya liam from Indonesia comments... He so hate malaysia..... Hahahaha 😂
Yeah me too, can't wait to meet that East Indonesian a-hole woke leftist Islamophobic INCEL. Yup it's true Suhanjaya Lian is not Chindo, he's a Melanesian East Indonesian
😂
Hate?...makes it colourful.
Let's listen to opposing opinion.
We may learn something.
