Thank you Tony. I had the exact same thought that Crown Royal was the easiest and best furnace to get. You have given me more to think about with your stance on manufacturer experience. And yeah, $7.50 per foot for the cheaper insulated pex and $17.50 per foot for Central Boiler brand!
Crown was definitely one of the top brands I looked at. However I am extremely happy with the Heatmaster brand of boilers, but part of that had to do with the positive experience I had with the person installing my unit.

One more thing to add, do you have a automatic
Generator for power outages, so it doesn’t boil over
Ok first I do have a whole house generator in case of power outage so if power goes on there are no fans to blow on the coals and the fire will die.
Second I think you will be very happy with the new gasification units out there. Pick a dear near you that offers after sales service.

One thing I have learned with these units is the underground piping. About 20-25 years ago my neighbor installed a central boiler. It was 200 ft from the home and he needed 10 GPM with a 20 degree split across the plate exchanger to get 100,000 BTU's This was not going to happen with the pressure drop of 200ft plus the plate exchanger with 1 inch pipe. To get the proper flow rate with a minimum amount of pump energy we decided to use 1-1/2 tubing. There was no 1-1/2 tubing available in this country back then and the cost of importing from Germany was insane. So looking at the temperature pressure charts for 200 psi PE well piping we decided to trench, line the trench with 2 inch polyboard top and bottom. Last year the boiler was decommissioned as it just had to many leaks to be repaired but the piping never missed a beat and lasted longer than the boiler. We only buried at 30 inches and the heat loss was on the high side as you could see the ground melt after a light snow. Now I would lay down 2 inch board, lay my pipe spaced on top and then foam on top. Since wood boilers are open systems there is nothing but a pound or 2 of head pressure. The pipe grew a foot when heated but so does PEX.

Wow 16.5k, I would've thought it would have been alot more!. Wood burning inserts for the home in my area are around 8k for a large insert with blowers. Great video Tony!

This was an excellent and detailed overview of this boiler. The thing I love about our Crown Royal 7300e (also a gasifier unit) is it is very simple with not a lot of bells a whistles. In my mind that means less things to go wrong. It's amazing the similarities between your heat master and our crown royal. Great video!

I designed and Built My own System around a Central Boiler Classic 6048 in 2007. 500'000 Btu to heat the old House and was Planning to heat the garage as well Just shy of 400 gallons of Water. Severely over sized it Lol Went through about 8/10 Cords a year. loading it once every 24 Hrs. Made My own under ground Insulated Pipe System That was 5 feet down so it came in through the Foundation wall just above the Footing. Designed and built The Distribution Manifold Etc.
It was so efficient I had to drop the water temp cause it over heated the Safety on the Water heater gas valve . and put in a Mixing valve to control temp at the Faucets.
I had to do it all over again when I moved to My new Place after the Fire. I have in floor Heat for 900 Sqft. I need to get the shop Heated so I can dump excess Heat out there, Cause once I get the Slab up to Temp in the House it will stay warm for almost 3 days and the Fire goes out.

hi there another interesting show . i built my boiler around 25 years ago before i could get info from the internet . its a bit out dated and likes to eat wood but i am heating a lot of spaces and a also a small green house . i do have a small LED light in the front i installed that just stays on all the time . my neighbor got a Central boiler 4 years ago . his calls him on his cell phone when it needs more wood . . . thanks for showing it to us john

I know there are more Pro’s & Cons but I Hope this answers some of you questions.
Hey Tony. Were you able to look at Garn units at MREA? In my opinion these are the most user friendly high efficiency chunk wood boilers made. Albeit capital expense is way higher than traditional owbs due to size and installation requirements. Major benefits is highly efficient, the ability to burn in -50 to 100*f ambient, minimal moving parts, and approved for horizontal flue. I’m going on 15 years with my home built unit. It is amazing that heat master, central boiler, polar, etc. have in the last few years to a decade finally built downdraft boilers and advertise it like they rediscovered fire. Europe has been building them this way for 40+ years.
Garry I can’t say I saw the Garn units when I was doing my research. The EU is so far ahead of North American on alternative energy especially heating since resources are scarce and expensive. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍

Jon Central Boiler is a very good boiler. I didn’t have good luck with the dealer around me and based on reviews and referrals the Heatmaster and Crown kept coming up as the tops for “Gasification units”. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍

Hi Tony - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. Thank you for a most informative video and for advising us that the US of A is working hard on catching up on modern wood burning technology. A number of European countries have been developing gasifying boilers for decades and I have lusted after one for years but with my setup it just can't happen. My perception of your old style of OWB is that they were ferociously hungry for wood and caused many social problems with excessive smoke while idling. I have never heard of Ameican style OBWs being used in the British Isles - they are totally alien to us.

I am well aware Europe has been ahead of US with heating technology. You are right The older OWB are notorious for dumping out a lot of smoke but the new gasification units only deposit a little smoke on startup but after that it’s typically clear. Thanks for watching 👍

I know you made no claims but my perception was influenced by my rural upbringing in Ireland in the 60s where we believed then that everything was better in the US of A - everything was bigger, better, more advanced, sidewalks (we call them footpaths) were paved with gold and you were all millionaires. Oh for the innocence of youth! As a matter of interest, have you ever visited Ireland? I've never made it over to your side of the the pond.

The cost is high, but the pay back should over 5-10 years should cover it.
We have a air source heat pump that will heat our house, but only down to 25 degrees and that cut the propane bill in half.

Base on my last oil fill up my boiler with the tax rebate will pay for itself by the end of next year when I started the research I was planning on it taking 5 to 7 years lol

I was looking at a G4000 and possibily install it in my 36x30 shop in place of the woodstove that is out there. Then I can run a line to my house and put a air exchanger in near the current woodstove.
That’s the nice thing about the Heatmaster is you can operate inside a building. Though mine is located outside about 25’ away I have a heat exchanger inside my 36’ x54’ pole barn and it keeps it toasty warm when I crank it up. Otherwise it primarily heats my house and all hot water.
You’re gonna love it.

Morning Tony - thanks for the tour and details. A lot of folks are looking into wood heat. A q for u : what happens if you run out of dry wood and have to use something with a higher moisture content ( ie - really cold winter, you use more wood than expected and run out of reserve etc and need to use some green stuff). Can you still heat with it ? Thanks!
GP there is no issue with using non seasoned wood ( moisture levels over 25 to 30 % or more) For the first two seasons I didn’t have any seasoned wood so I burned anything I could cut and split. The main issue is the drip tray I showed in the video fills up with water and overflows and you see a puddle in the front of the furnace. Basically you are getting less BTU’s from the wood because the furnace has to boil out the water before it burns the wood. With all that said I love heating with the OWB. Thanks for watching 👍

What an informative video tony on the G200. I been looking into one and you gave me some great information. Not sure where the nearest Heatmaster dealer is. We have a crown Royal dealer about an hour and 15 minutes away. But with the review of heatmaster will definitely keep them in mind too!

Regarding the light, I have a "dark" door on one of my sheds. I found a motion activated solar light on Amazon that is bright enough for me and stays on for a reasonable amount of time.

Outdoor boilers are really nice in many ways! I had a Nature's Comfort which only lasted about 5 years before it burned out!! Now iam having to figure out which manufacturer to go with or if iam going to replace it at all!! I've looked at Heat Master's and iam pretty impressed!! I have all the wood in the world to burn between logging, tree service, and a couple hundred acres of woods at the farm!! Stay safe my friend

I’ve seen a couple guys that are going to a massive version of an outdoor wood burning system that is big enough to load up with 6-8’ logs with your skid steer or forklift, they’re AWESOME 😎

Dick that’s depends on what wood I’m using, if it’s dry oak or locust and I fill up with about 30 pcs of wood I do that twice a day. If I use poplar or box elder then probably three times a day. Thanks for watching 👍
Figured you would eventually get into a more elaborate description of your boiler. I worked HVAC for 8 yrs in Florida.
Does your piping pump to an inline duct heat exchanger that works off your air handler for your furnace. Ie: forced air
Or do you have baseboard or radiant heat. I would think you might need a separate pump/ distribution device in the home/ outbuilding for that. Have not known anyone to pick their brain on their style of installation. Thank you for a very informative video Tony. 👍
I have a conventional gas forced air unit that uses LP since I’m out in the country. My installer cut into the back of my furnace and put in a heat exchanger so the furnace fan blows across the heated coils and supplies heat.

I saw your forced air heat exchanger hanging in your garage. I assume you probably have the same thing in your pole bldg??? We would put a rectangular electric heat strip inside the duct. It used the same air handler for the A/C because some parts of the state did not have natural gas.

Hey Tony, looking at picking up a used G200s. I noticed in your video and in a picture of the one I’m picking up that some of the metal plates inside the burn chamber are warped. Are you having any issues because of that? Is it a concern? Great video! Thanks.
I believe the metal plates in the burn chamber have been warped from day one. I’ve never asked my installer about that. I recently did an after season cleaning and thought plates are warped they are solid when I scraped them to knock off some creosote build up.

Hi, thanks for the video. My question is can you go south to Florida for a month. If so do you have winterize it and redo the start up when you come back? My question assumes you can use with a propane system as well for the time away,
Ralph in the past the LP was my primary heat source. Now the boiler is my primary and the LP is secondary. So if I go away the LP heats the house and keeps the water circulating throughout the boiler so it doesn’t freeze. Many people who own boilers ask a neighbor or friend to load the boiler when they are gone. Hope that answers your question. Appreciate you watching 👍

Rick there is no issues with building an enclosure over the OWB and have an attached woodshed. I’ve wanted to do that since I bought the unit. Lumber prices have been extremely high so I’ve been holding off but plan on building a shed next spring. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Build an outbuilding with a basement and place the unit in an insulated area with below ground space for wood storage.

@@timothykeith1367 That is what I have been thinking about. Adding and addition and placing a unit like this in basement area for wood only. Than have a large overhead door where I can back my dump trailer up to and dump 7+ cord into the basement. MAYBE someday

What are the consumable items you will have to buy? And how often?
Thomas Depending on how high fuel costs go I estimate 10-11 years on payback. Not much in consumables except chemical additives at $30 a gallon every two years. After three years I’ve replace a fan motor at $100 and bought a back up water pump for $140. Other then that only keep feeding them with wood. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
I’m convinced that with the price of these beasts they should be outfitted with a propane burner for startup and low temperature events to keep it from freezing and ruining itself
George you should speak with a OWB dealer about this. I know you could have a system that uses antifreeze and not water so if it stopped working the pipes wouldn’t burst. My unit is tied in with my existing LP gas system and when the wood stove goes below a specific temp the gas unit comes on as a backup. Thanks for watching and commenting
Just curious what do you have to do if power is lost? Do you have a generator to run the boiler? Or do you just run wood stove inside with gas furnace? I have been burning wood inside for 10 years and I'm thinking about getting a boiler but I'm just un sure. They use a lot of wood. How much wood do you burn on an average year?
Curtis because I live way in the sticks I do have a whole house generator. So if there is a power failure I can get the LP furnace and outdoor boiler working. My inside fireplace would warm most of my house with no problem. Including both the inside fireplace and OWB I burn between 7 to 9 full cords. I also heat my outbuilding as well but I only turn on when I’m working inside. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Hey TONY, $16,500.00 is a lot of money. How many years would it take to pay the gas company that amount, plus all the time spent cutting, splitting, stacking, loading, cleaning out the box and the time and cost to maintain it. Is it worth it ? I live in a County in Pa. where they do not even want you to burn wood outside in a fire pit. Soon they will try to stop you burning in a Fire 🔥place, I say good luck to them. You know the ROI or payback depending on future fuel costs is estimated at 8 to 12 years. But the non tangible element is this thing is going to keep me fit and trim by cutting splitting and stacking hopefully for a long time to come. I agree 100% it would be easier to flip the switch and just let the LP warm me up. It may seem weird but the heat I get from the boiler seems to better then the LP heat. I can’t explain it and it could just be in my head but both my wife and I say the same thing. Thanks for watching 👍
@@TonysCoolTools Big Rodders from Ireland here. I agree with you wholeheartedly. Oil, propane and electricity may heat the body but wood heat also touches the soul. When I stare into my glass fronted stove that heats my entire property I think of stone age man and ponder on the lives that have existed on wood heat from time immemorial.
@@TonysCoolTools Somehow the heat from the woodstove warms me up better than the gas furnace. When I have icicles hanging on me, and I walk into the house, it instantly starts warming me. And yes, it's in my head, the thot of all the money I'm saving, that warms me too! Money saved is worth more than just those dollars, if you figure taxes on money earned, to match it!!

Tony, when your boiler is operating at it’s hottest, how hot is the outside of the unit to touch?
Jay the unit is very well insulated so you can put your hand on the side of the furnace with no problem. However no snow builds up on top or side of furnace. Thanks for watching 👍
What's the power draw on these units? I've really considered it for my new build but a wood stove in the basement requires no power. My new property is very remote and my power comes from solar/ wind
Unfortunately I don’t know the draw consumption but from what I can see there are no high amp motors on this boiler. A few relays and one smoke bypass fan but it’s small. I think solar power would do the trick but you’d have to confirm with the company you are looking to purchase from for definitive conformation on spec’s. Thanks for watching 👍

When to add mine is still at bottom of full but idk. And i forogt to send in my samplr due to sample cans missing haveny even had it a year yet
I ran out of bottles the second year and was told by Heatmaster customer service to just use a clean soda bottle that can hold 12-16oz of water out of your boiler which I did. After analyzing my sample they told me to put in 1/2 gal of the treatment. If I were you I would probably call Heatmaster , explain your situation so you don’t void the warranty.

Kirk I had my G200 installed Sept of 2018. The only issue I had was the bypass blower motor went out Jan of 2022. I picked one up from my installer ($120) and installed myself. That’s the only problem so far. I would definitely recommend the Heatmaster brand. Let me know if you have any other questions.

If not pulling in sucking exhaust u r losing heat ot wet screening micro thin film filter containment, but if u go bs old route u need a min 2 exhaust pipes u open & control automation wise & 4 recirculating min tubs b4 it exhaust.

Peter, I live in central Wisconsin, though the G200 can handle 5000 SF my house is 3000 SF and my pole barn is just under 2000 SF. I don’t heat the pole barn all winter just when I work out there. I go through about 8 or 9 Full cords of wood.

Hello Tony, How much wood are you burning in a year on average? I would have to agree with you that Crown make a nice gasification boiler. To bad about the dealer. You can get a 26%tax credit if you buy a gasification unit by the end of the year.
Corey that’s a nice credit. We keep thermostat at at 72 degrees and don’t tough it all winter. I estimate including wood for both the boiler and fireplace inside 7 to 8 full cords. As I mentioned I only heat my pole barn when I’m working out there. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
@@TonysCoolTools Big Rodders yet again. Your low annual consumption for such a large property is very impressive. I live in a small 900 sq ft bungalow and burn 9 cords of mainly softwood a year in a water jacket glass fronted stove that heats the entire property and provides unlimited hot water.
What do you do if you go on vacation in the winter for a week or more?
When my outdoor boiler runs low on wood it automatically switches to my other heat source which is LP (liquid propane) gas . Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
What happens if the water freezes when the fire goes out. Are U telling me it also runs on propane.
@@franciscoconceicao8900 Francisco there is a pump in the OWB that moves the water all the time. When the OWB goes out the LP gas unit kicks in and it heats the water from the OWB. The big issue is if the power goes out nothing works and things could freeze up, that’s why I have a generator for back-up.

Pre heating w/wood least smoke down suck into water the best, the more volume the greater loading automation the better. Only bring to boil under gas controlled fire, no limit on pool storage greatest battery if not mobile.

Tony Toni Toni you should do your research on a rocket mass heater doesn't take much wood can heat your whole house and you build it with your own hands I'd like to see your research on this it's a lot cheaper than what you're doing there remember rocket mass heater
Ian I have seen the rocket stoves and agree much cheaper and based on what I saw they work very well. however a couple factors to consider. Will my insurance company approve it? Two, When I go to sell my house are rocket stoves as accepted by people as OWB. I would have to build two, 1 for the house and one for the pole building. Maybe if I were going to stay at this house for an extended period of time I would have to consider. Thanks so much for suggesting other options. That’s how we all lean in TH-cam land. $16,000 in 2019 now its probably $25,000 -$30,000 Just my guess because of the price of steel and labor gone up so much.
Dana it’s identical to dump trailer pricing going up 20%-40%. It’s crazy. I have a video coming out Sunday, spent the day with my Heatmaster installer on the new 2022 models. Wish I had asked him for pricing to see the difference. There is one silver lining for this year only, and that’s a tax credit for 26% on the total installation not just the OWB.

I agree outdoor wood boilers are a bit more complicated, that’s why we also have a whole house fireplace inside that I just feed with wood. No electricity needed.

This machine is a hunk of garbage. I had one one winter and made them take it off my property. went with a c series model and never looked back. The gasification models are finicky. The fan dies out, fuses blow all the time. Nothing but trouble. Stupid design having the fans inline with the exhaust path. Just leads to dirty heat exchangers and it's a chore to clean. I repeat. Horrid engineering. Don't do it.
Mathew I appreciate your viewpoint. I’ve had a different experience with my gasification unit. I like the fact that I’m burning less wood on a yearly basis. I’m on my fifth season and I did have to install a new fan in year 3 and yes I have had a fuse blow one time before replacing with their new circuit breaker. My only complaint is the paint is pealing off the front of the unit around the door where I load the wood.

@@TonysCoolTools so I have heard the bigger model like yours was a bit better operating. The smaller model however, I will tell you was a complete disaster. I blew about a dozen fuses and went through three fan motors in one season. Mind you we have very harsh winters that last 6 months at least. The heating season can be upwards of 9 months.
I like the idea of gasification and being more efficient. I used to build rocket stoves that actually burnt clean though. I did four seasons of two different versions of rocket mass heaters.. one batch box and one j-tube. My chimney was so clean after those 4 years you could eat off of it. Not a single creosote flake to be found whatsoever.
With the g100 i had so much creosote build up inside of my machine it was strait disgusting. The heat exchanger tubes would get horribly clogged and my fan cage would just get coated. I was using barkless super dry and even small split wood. All oak, birch, and a little bit of maple. The reason why I m so adamantly calling it a hunk of garbage is because the price point is just silly considering the flaws. To my standards, a unit that costs that much brand new should at least operate for the first few seasons without any real major problems. I was literally out there once a week cleaning out the tubes. My house was cold all winter. I was also back and forth with the manufacturer to troubleshoot and figure out what is going on. They were pretty glad to replace my unit because they knew I was going to just be emailing them every week, lol.
I even gave them my suggestion to correct the engineering mistakes. I suggest they simplify their air pathways and eliminate the air intake solenoid and just mount a forward pressure fan like their other units that essentially work flawlessly. In all the gasification stoves that I built the "reburn" chamber is always a pathway on the back side of the fire, not the front nor the bottom. They could have just mounted that slit(but way wider on the back side of the fuel box instead of the bottom where it gets clogged with ash constantly. And I told themthey should increase the internal surface area of the heat exchanging. And at one point I actually had the formulas to prove I was correct. A 6 inch system could take a ton of surface area to allow heat to be exchanged, and also to ensure no impedance to the gas flow path. The heat exchanger tubes were so narrow. Il i don't think the air was ever moving fast enough for the reburn to happen effectively, especially with just a little bit of ash getting down in it causing it to choke and burn inconsistently. The g series is just a very odd engineering choice. They could have built it more simpler and way more efficient in my mind. I hope someday they do build a better unit because they are definitely good welders. They use a very high quality steel on the internals too. For some reason it just seems that the efficiency units were rushed due to meet newer efficiency standards set for during the Obama era. Soaybe in a few years we will see improvements.
Sorry for the long post but I feel very strongly about my efficiency standards as well. 😀 I hope you have way better luck with yours in the long run. But when my c series is blows out, my plan is to build an outdoor rocket heater with my own heat exchange system. Look out on TH-cam for when I do because it's going to be awesome and I'm going to give away my ideas for free.
Matthew thanks for the detailed info. I can honestly say in the 5 years I’ve occasionally used wood that has been pretty wet and through I’ve hade creosote build up, after I used super dry wood and card board I burned it all up. I love the fact all I have to do is pull and drop the turbulator handle about 8 times every time I load the OWB and my heat exchanger tubes have stayed clean.
I think you unfortunately got a lemon.
