Have you guys seen the old black n white video i think of ww2 or Korea of the B17 flyby. They did it twice because they were so low, they were below the flight deck that no one even seen them in time to film it, so they did a 2nd pass and told them where to look. It's crazy seeing those flying fortresses that fast and that low below the carriers deck
I said this to someone else; The reason Top Gun used F-18's is because there were no 2 Seater F-35's for the Actors to Fly in, as Tom Cruise wanted; So my question is; how the whole film have played out with F-35's. In all likelihood they wouldn't have been shot down; so how would the Final Fight have gone in F-35's had the Su-57's been nearer?
It doesn't get mentioned but while Hangman now has two kills, Rooster has three. As part of a dual crewed aircraft, he shares the SU-57 victories with Maverick plus he shot down the helicopter.
@@ozpin8329 Rooster is unfamiliar with the seat model, as he is F18 only era, and the A-model Tomcat had a different seat. He may have even been foolish enough to think it was live from the moment the aircraft started.

Mover = "Do you think Maverick is an A&P?" Gonky = "Do you think he cares?" The commentary was Gold throughout this series..... im going to go back and rewatch the whole thing. 👍
A P-51 is more than likely classified as "EXPEREMENTAL" allowing the owner to perform their own maintenance. Only the air worthyness inspections have to be performed and signed off by an A&P.
@@DoomRulz "Airframe and Powerplant mechanic". On aircraft other than aircraft designated as Experimental, a licensed A&P mechanic has to do maintenance on aircraft. The joke is if Maverick is a licensed A&P or not to work on his aircraft legally, that is if it is not deemed "experimental" which would basically allow him to wrench on it all he wants..
@@robweiss748 guaranteed to be spark plugs imo. But also protected under 14 CFR Part 43. Almost a guarantee this plane is considered experimental. Though the fact that Tom Cruise used it for the end of the movie almost makes you wonder if FAA would classify that differently as it took part in something that earned income.
In the film, it's a relatively small missile locked to the side of the intakes on Hangman's F-18(?) I don't know what kind. The third SU57 pilot didn't seem to get a missile warning before he got blowed up. Wouldn't the SU57s sensors detect an incoming missile?
@@BTM8109 thats why i was like how tf the moment the SU-57 fires the missile then boom gets hit by Hangman's missile. While the old F-14A could detect a lock so fast the moment the radar and radio circuit breaker is press in.
A proper ending to that carrier landing, since Mover mentioned 'Hot Shots', would be for Rooster's ejection seat to finally fire, sending him up and over the deck, into the water. Good series, you guys. A little snark is always good for an action movie. Shows an actual respect for the show.
"What was he the spare to, the whole war??" One of your best comments, then you go "What, did he go to AA and find Jesus?" 2 for 2 there, I'm still laughing!
Thanks for doing this guys…. Felt like we were right there with you, and you didn’t ruin it, we all know it’s a movie and hearing you guys bang around about it was fun. Excellent work 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Great move and great comments guys. Maybe the Darkstar didn't need to be in it, but dang! that is a beautiful fuselage. Some shots were too close, but in the old days, non-active duty friends would sometimes slip in an unauthorized maneuver or two like giving their F-105 leader a surprise "Hot Nose" rejoin. Lead calls for a straight-ahead join off the range and is head down busy getting the clearance while his wingman, at 550K, would come under him and pull up while lighting the hard light afterburner so lead would have a face full of jet and a hard light afterburner explosion. It would shake the canopy and knock your feet off the rudder peddles. What a thrill! A training rule might have been bent but I think the only danger was giving the leader a heart attack. There was no chapter in the rule book about doing or not doing a Hot Nose Rejoin. I can't find any demonstrations on the internet so it will just have to be a memory. It was not uncommon to get the wing rock to join the flight of four into fingertip during RTB from the range and do barrel roll descents from cruise altitude down to initial. My first time flying this I was four and a brown bar, I was so excited and laughed so hard throughout the rolls. I couldn't believe we were doing it, but it was safe, just upside down. I tried it with a flight of two while on active duty and the wingman had a fit. We sometimes did a low-level to the range and did a popup to HADB in the F-16. I was surprised that it was almost like Maverick's attack sans the mountains. It surprised the range officer. Under certain circumstances, it might be a viable tactic. One of the founders of air combat said, "Flexibility is the key to Air Power." After we retired, my SQ/CC said in his day it was not uncommon to fly under bridges in his F-84. I bet there are plenty of stories out there where the pilots have done some pretty exciting things like in the movie or very close to it. There were lots of flybys done over girlfriend's or family member's houses. Some didn't turn out so well, unfortunately. None of it is permitted these days. None of it was "permitted" in those days either. They weren't very tactical, but they sure were fun and it did teach you to think so in a way they were tactical. I am about to watch my copy of Maverick for the seventh time. It does keep getting better. We all wish we could do it again. I have heard some stories from the old days by Navy pilots about landing from the back side of a loop or Immelmen. I had never seen it before, but it sure sounded interesting. I don't know the copyright rules and I never notice links on TH-cam and I can't read the copyright so the credit to them. If you search for this subject. INCREDIBLE Landing Maneuver With The Rafale! There is a good chance you will find a very short video of a Rafale flying an Immelman to a landing, a beautiful stunt. It would be a typical Maverick maneuver. Maybe it will show up in TOPGUN 3. Maybe you two guys will get a chance for another fini flight and you could end it this way and in fingertip.
One of my biggest disappointments in the script was the ending on deck, hugged it out. “Thank you for saving my life”, why didn’t they have him reply “Bulls*hit thank you for saving mine”? As for the P51, idk why everyone is getting up in arms over it being an airforce plane in a navy movie. In terms of screen presence it’s definitely more iconic to the general public than a corsair. The cost for those are more unrealistic than him flying one, i’m going with Mav having restored or built a kit version (still pretty expensive tho). Still i think you have to compare the two endings to the two themes of the movies. In the original Mav is going off to continue his career flying with the best. In this sequel he’s basically now retired and he finally gets the family that he avoided when he was flying for the navy. Just like the first movie it’s showing the next step in his life, flying off into the sunset. I think it makes perfect sense, even music wise. In a sense he’s no longer Maverick, he’s become just Pete Mitchell again…
Spot on. Top Gun is about Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick is about Maverick. The endings make perfect sense. Also I doubt most regular people are even aware Mustangs are Air Force and not Navy. Doubt they even make a distinction between the two at all.
I think the movie had to limit the amount of f-bombs to get its rating. It used up its 1 f-bomb license in that scene where the Su57 does its thrust vectoring black magic
I’m going with Mav cutting a deal with “Fat Leonard” Francis to get the Mustang. Thus why he lives in the hangar- can’t get served if he lives on base !😂
I mean, how many surviving Corsairs are even in private hands these days? I don't know for sure, but I feel privately owned Mustangs have to be far far more common and realistic to own.
Mustang was an Army fighter. Maverick and Iceman are peer relationship in TG. Maverick and Rooster are a father-son relationship in the family and a senior-junior relationship in the service. If Rooster responded to Maverick with "Bullsh*it", that would be totally off - and Mover wouldn't let that go.
I watched Clint Eastwood in “Firefox” the other day. The whole time I wondered what Mover & Gonky would have to say about that one! It is a fictional plane, but could still be interesting.
When you guys were talking about Maverick's home/hanger, I could almost hear Chris Farley saying, "the next thing you know, you are living in a hanger down at the airport!"
Thank you Mover and Gonky for taking the time to give us some great insight on the movies. I for one appreciate getting insight on some of the things that we all think are cool or possible but are actually have different outcomes than what the movies would should. Can't wait to see your next video that you do.
Darn, someone beat me to it but yeah AMRAAM shot from the fuselage is a really cool detail harder to see when the F-18 breaks away from the Tomcat and shows its belly but it is also missing in that shot as well. This is a really nice detail and also gives us reason to suspect that he was carrying 2 Aim-9X, 6 Aim-120 AMRAAMs, 2 GBU 24 Paveway IIIs, not to mention the external fuel tanks. The guy was flying heavy but the only AMRAAM fired in the movie is a cool thought.
Great series Mover! I really appreciate all the aggravation you went through to get these out. Keep up the great work! And Gonky, it was good to see ya again!
Anyone else notice the sun in different positions during Mav’s landing? When it shows Rooster it’s behind, when is Mav’s POV it’s in front - behind the superstructure, when they touch it’s to the the left of the tomcat, when they finally grind to a halt, it’s behind again… Side note, loved these video. Thanks Mover and Gonky!
I’ve noticed that in everything where there’s a character named “Admiral Cain” the person has been a total tool, psycho or somehow an antagonist. But the one that takes the cake for me is Admiral Helena Cain from BSG played by Michelle Forbes, Ed Harris takes a very close #2 spot behind her IMO 😂
Guys , you both haven't ruined the movie but made it even better with all your knowledges put onto the table and made it so smoothly, so casually, so professionally . Nothing else but pure respect and your chemistry is outstanding. Thank you for the videos and they are definitely gold. Prolly the best movie analysis I've watched in recent years. Cheers for TOMCATS !
I joined in 1988. After boot and aprenticship training they sent me to VF124 Gunfighters, NAS Miramar. Next door to VF1 Wolfpack and Top Gun. I was a plane captain striking for my AT Crow. That year was the one of the best of my life. The original Top Gun had came out two years prior. We were kings of the world.
7:45 Looks like Gonky actually was right about the cheek mount- there's an AMRAAM on the right intake but missing on the left. So yes, we are meant to believe that they scrambled Hangman off the deck to go fight in a Rhino with three bags, two Paveways, two Sidewinders, six AMRAAMs, and an invisible ATFLIR. Yeehaw cowboy.
I have been watch your channel for years now and really enjoy it especially with "Gonky". You two have live what every young boy and most men and yes some women dream about. A mix of awesome review and absolute roast of the “realism” in this dogfight is going to be so entertaining! I loved the final dogfight and it will probably go down as one of Tom Cruise’s best action scenes. It’s just not that realistic sadly.
@@BTM8109 from what I found in regards to production: the final dogfight is 100% CGI when it comes to the aircraft. As for terrain, I have no idea if it’s a mix of real and computer or full CGI…
@@gryphon1342 For the ground scenes, they used F-14A 159631 from a museum in San Diego. The aircraft was partially restored to have enough hydraulics for canopy opening and closing and wings unfolding/folding. They even painted it to look like the one in the movie including the rogue nation insignia (the aircraft already had a black based tail due to being a high visibility squadron bird). They towed it for the taxiing scenes. All the cockpit footage is from that actual plane.
1:01 We (the UK) had a female Apache pilot whose nickname was "Winchester". She was an absolute fucking Terminator who'd have a go at anything that moved if she had so much as a single round left. If she came to my house, the fish'd stop swimming. The amount of times she came back from ops with that word floating over the airwaves....
"See, he got cocky. He wanted the guns kill, wanted to tell his little buddies when he got back..." "Well wouldn't you?" "...yes..." Love you both so much for the back and forth.
Like you said people just need to look at this movie as entertainment. It's not supposed to be a documentary so they can do whatever they want to the plot. As a summer fun movie, I think they did an excellent job to dumb it down enough for the regular people to follow the technical stuff without making us feel stupid. I would like to see another one soon instead of waiting all my life (born in May of 86).
Gonky, Mover, you guys are awesome and I'm so glad I found this, it's really great to get your perspective on these films!! God bless you, thank you for your service!!! 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Loved watching your critique. Thanks for sharing your expertise and humor. I would really like to see you interview the technical advisors on the film. It would be very entertaining to hear the internal give and take between the director/screenwriter and the technical advisors. The sad part is a lot of what you pointed out would be easy to fix without much effort or impact to the plot.
That does seem to be a generic problem with movies these days. A lot of the incorrect or unrealistic details seem to be fairly simple to fix, but for some reason they don't bother doing so...
Man, that was a fun series. Thanks guys. I personally like the beginning and especially the end. But that's just personal taste. Most entertaining movie I've seen in at least 10 years. Probably since Captain America: Winter Soldier. And I think the crew of the ship hated H_ngm_n so much they overloaded him hoping he'd go into the drink on take off. 🤣
I don't really understand the complaints about the Mustang not being a Navy aircraft. Would a retired Navy pilot really turn up their nose at any WWII aircraft that wasn't Navy? Besides, privately owned F4U Corsairs and F6F Hellcats are far more rare than P-51s, and are probably even more expensive to buy.
I would like to thank you guys for tanking your time to make these series of videos. As a airline pilot I really had fun on your comments and I also had the opportunity of learning a lot of these different aviation world. Good movie, awesome comments! Thanks a lot! 👍🏻
🤣 Rooster knows how to expertly and quickly start a huffer, preflight the F-14, and knows how to get into a jet which was probably retired before he joined the Navy (last flight 2006) but forgets to pull the pins and arm his ejection seat. FAIL Lol. 😂 the P-51 tax break comment was epic! Love you guys! Keep roasting movies ~ WAK
Re Rooster, doesn't this happen all the time in life? Don't tell me you have never been in or seen a similar situation. The P-51 tax break is meaningless unless you bother to check its ownership structure. The natural reason for it in the movie is because Tom Cruise knows how important Top Gun (1986) and its legacy mean to him, and he wants to include everything he loves about aviation in the sequel.
To be completely fair, Maverick himself, who did fly, was trained, and his five kills were in F-14s so the guy is more than at home in that old bird, also forgot to check if the ejection seats were armed. So joke is on both.
@@CWLemoine I see. That's what I get for being new to the channel :P Salutations from the RCAF, btw...not a pilot, just a member of a Construction Engineer Squadron.
So the reason why Hangman's Hornet in this looks so weird is because apparently they used a legacy Hornet for that shot and photoshopped a Superhornet on it. Did you guys notice how the two fuel tanks looked like they were mounted on the cheek stations and weren't even held by pylons. They were just part of the wing and the engine air intake at the same time
@@ruiliu4157 Well this movie has been being made for years now so i recon they might have done that scene when the Legacy was still around. In fact if you look at some of the hanger briefing scenes, look closely and you'll see that some of the Hornets in the background are legacys
@@alexanderbreunig7016 the thing was they used a legacy Hornet probably with 2 bags. Then superimposed a Superhornet on it. So the Legacy Hornet's bags are a lot closer obviously so they made it look like they're stuck to the cheek stations of the Superhornet
I had so much fun watching this series. It's the nuts.. I was a TomCat fan as a kid and a navy brat (still have some trinkets and patches from the Kitty Hawk from VFA-213 and my tiger cruise) . Variable geometry apparently was in my future when I enlisted in the AF (yes dad approved) and became an F-111 maintainer and then AF ATC after they retired the airframe. It brings me back to the days of watching movies in the dayroom or with my dad, pointing out the finer details that were "conjecture" for the sake of good entertainment. But at the end of the day was entertaining. Cheers to you two for sharing.. Cleared off, monitor guard and report back up. JV - JohnnyVector
They really should have put Anthony Edwards in the credits. I realize there's probably some rule why they couldn't. Also I totally did not say "TOMCATS!" (quietly) in the theater.
As a filmmaker, always thanks to all people working on the real field, especially who point out many 'real' and 'unreal' things to us. Sometimes we sacrifice some things to make it more narrative, but we will not forget anything because basically we want to make things 'realistic'.
MFW... when the DVD commentary with people who weren't even in the movie is better than the movie... Great series Moover, if only paramount had the sense to consult with you guys during the editing phase of production...and stayed out of your hair while you promoted it for free in the aviation enthusiast community! keep making em we'll keep watching em.
Guys, I'm at work and I just listened to all 8 in a row. Love the commentary. As a former ADA Army guy I can definitely appreciate your context about realism. You and Gonky give me that Mystery Science Theater 3000 vibe for military movies. Plenty of fighter movies out there, maybe comment on specific air to air or air to ground segments in differnt movies and build a whole new playlist ?
I consider the movie “Stealth” a sequel to Maveric. His worst nightmare came true…..unmanned fighter jets. And the pilots were from the navy too 😂 “EDI is the whole idea!”
My take on Hangman (FWIW) I didn’t really pick up on this until the third or 4th time watching. With an air to air kill, he’s a true air to air combat vet. So he suffers no fools, especially over egoed hot shots that did well in training, maybe dropped bombs but probably haven’t seen SAMs or enemy air threat. So they haven’t seen the monster like him. He wants to be team lead because he freaking wants to come home. Of course there are reindeer games and posturing and some cringe dialogue, but at the base is that Hangman has zero confidence in his teammates because they have no idea what they are into. That’s why he can be so bold to a kooky old has been O6 with a 4 star buddy. He knows lives are on the line for real and DGAF. Blood >career. but three key events: complete his arc. 1. Mav does the practice bomb run mission. Hangman is like - ok this guy is for real, and still has IT. 2. He meets up with rooster just before launch and says “give ‘em hell” .? Acknowledging We aren’t in the locker room anymore, we are on the same field, same team. He is totally thrilled when they hit the target. Reminds me of Similar scene in Glory between two rival units when the one pulled the tough job of leading the assault. We go at each other in training, but when the bullets fly, I am your 6. 3. He launches and smokes the Felon, and while he has fun with it, he doesn’t rub it in. Am I projecting onto him a bit as a combat vet, probably. But When the training calendar is replaced by a two way live fire, bullshit walks. I learned this as a cherry 2LT trying to lead a platoon of returning Mogadishu vets, and I saw it as an O4 with time in country taking new arrivals on adventures in Iraq, including an O6. Bottom line, hangman earned the right to be a dick but when shit got real, he was the best pilot and teammate you could hope for. I really liked that character.
An F/A-18E? First of all the SU-57 would have turned the other way where hangman was and smoke him in the face. Unless if he was flying an F-35C so it’s not easy for the F/A-18 to sneak up on that SU-57
@0:35 good mention! That could be why Hangman was in the air cuz the third SU57 was headed to the boat but saw the tomcat on radar and was like screw it ill go for these guys
The part that annoys me the most is that the movie implies Pete and Penny have had "on and off" flings before. Penny makes a point of this, and tells Pete not to even try this time. Then we get character development, they inevitably get back together, and Pete promises Penny he will *never leave her again*. Their relationship blossoms. The finale happens, Pete goes to visit Penny after the mission. She's gone sailing. So he sticks around until she gets back, right? It's only a day or so... Haha, nope! Ain't no one got time for that, that Mustang won't fix itself. He just abandons her again without saying a word and heads back to the desert. Only reason we got a happy ending is because Penny went after him
I think you are misunderstanding how long a sailing trip lasts. The racing boat featured in the film has a kitchen, crew bunks, etc. They could be out for a week for all Maverick knows. Is he supposed to sleep in the bar indefinitely? Of course not. He leaves a message and waits to hear back.
Gonky you made this fun, Mover you were sort of debbie downer most of the 8 reactions. I love the analysis but Gonky excitement made this fun and Mover just sort of going through motions of doing it. One of the most advanced fighter jet but the SU-57 fails to detect a lock from Hangman's missile.
You're assuming it was a guided missile, but when you're as good as Hangman is then it's better to run rocket pods to maximise your kill count! xD
Because SU57 is garbage.. that is why you won't see it in Ukraine war..
The Su57 is Not Dominating ukraine airspace.. bwahahahahaha..
In the film, it's a relatively small missile locked to the side of the intakes on Hangman's F-18(?) I don't know what kind. The third SU57 pilot didn't seem to get a missile warning before he got blowed up. Wouldn't the SU57s sensors detect an incoming missile?

A proper ending to that carrier landing, since Mover mentioned 'Hot Shots', would be for Rooster's ejection seat to finally fire, sending him up and over the deck, into the water.
Good series, you guys. A little snark is always good for an action movie. Shows an actual respect for the show.

lol
I like how the last thing on Gonky’s mind is plugging his channel. He just wants to fly jets and listen to danger zone 😂
The entire series was HIGHLY entertaining and makes me enjoy the movie even more. Kudos.

It broke me when Mover said, "What was he the spare to? The whole war?!" 🤣🤣🤣
After the talk about the AMRAAMs there was a shot showing the cheek rail with one missing. Great attention to detail!
Gonky’s right! If you pause at 7:47 you’ll see that one of the AMRAAM’s on the fuselage is missing!

Anyone else notice the sun in different positions during Mav’s landing? When it shows Rooster it’s behind, when is Mav’s POV it’s in front - behind the superstructure, when they touch it’s to the the left of the tomcat, when they finally grind to a halt, it’s behind again…
Side note, loved these video.
Anyone named Cain (or Kane) is always a total tool. Except Joe Kucan's Kane in Command & Conquer. That's just camp awesome with a large ham.
Fun fact: if you read the full credits they list Cain's callsign as "Hammer", meaning he was once a Naval Aviator as well.

Hangman's excitable for choice.
Hangman should have jettisoned the bombs as soon as he was far enough from the carrier to do so. That way he's a2a configuration for the intercept

A mix of awesome review and absolute roast of the “realism” in this dogfight is going to be so entertaining!
I loved the final dogfight and it will probably go down as one of Tom Cruise’s best action scenes. It’s just not that realistic sadly.
Did they film the scene with two F-18s and then use CGI to re-skin the jets?
Thank you, guys. Watched your whole series, and enjoyed all of your input.

Like you said people just need to look at this movie as entertainment. It's not supposed to be a documentary so they can do whatever they want to the plot.
Absolutely love seeing how this review playlist, honestly makes me want to rewatch that movie all over again.
Yeah, Hangman's character development was something TGM brushed over, though I'm sure people can connect the dots based on what the movie showed.

Man, that was a fun series. Thanks guys. I personally like the beginning and especially the end. But that's just personal taste. Most entertaining movie I've seen in at least 10 years. The mustang into the sunset is an amazing visual pun! He rides off into the sunset on his "horse" with his girl in the saddle!!!

Not only do you get the pilots critiquing the movie, but you get real stories. AWESOME!

So the reason why Hangman's Hornet in this looks so weird is because apparently they used a legacy Hornet for that shot and photoshopped a Superhornet on it. Did you guys notice how the two fuel tanks looked like they were mounted on the cheek stations and weren't even held by pylons. They were just part of the wing and the engine air intake at the same time
Where could they find a legacy Hornet still flying for carrier? And it needs to have those angled pylons?
@@ruiliu4157 Well this movie has been being made for years now so i recon they might have done that scene when the Legacy was still around. In fact if you look at some of the hanger briefing scenes, look closely and you'll see that some of the Hornets in the background are legacys
Yup, underwing tank location is utter BS. There are no stations there, regardless whether you talk about a Legacy or a Super.

My take on Hangman (FWIW)
I didn’t really pick up on this until the third or 4th time watching.
Even as Veteran Piolets, you guys are OG Fans. RESPECT.
I agree with mover, they should have had two Hornets flying off into the sunset as the ending.
Or him getting back into the newly built Darkstar v2.0 and going for Mach 12.
Or two doghouses with Maverick and Snoopy as his wingman
