  • Are you ready to make a new hydroponics system? Why not grow your plants in a glass Ball jar? In this video, I'll show you how to turn a standard mason jar into a DWC or Kratky hydroponic growing container.

We will be growing (and cross breeding) hot peppers in these jars over the course of the winter season. However, you could grow just about anything you'd like with this same system.
This was a really fun little project, and it was super easy! You can modify any part of the process to your needs. Some people grow hydroponically in plastic water bottles, ceramic mugs, and yes, in Ball jars. Ball jar hydroponics is the way of the future! (Probably not, though)

I don't bother to paint my jars. I just slip them down into large size men's socks. If the socks are thin, I use two per jar. Simple... and it works.

lol, no way am scrapping socks for this. do you know how socks are worth here in Canada?!?

using 3 inch net pot will fit snugly in the mason jar. And tape a piece of black trash bag onto jar will block light.

First off, nice plant graphics at the beginning! I'm ignorant about growing plants in this method so I'm excited to see how this all turns out. This could be a cool new way for us to have fresh peppers year-round.

Don't you know that 3 inch net pots fit perfectly in a wide mouth jar? Or if not a wide mouth jar the 2 inch net pots fit if you leave the screw lid on. Need clay pebbles to block out light

Nice video. Quite interested in trying hydroponically growing stuff at some point

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I love the addition of the air stone. I recommend using chalkboard paint. It has several benefits, ie; labeling plant type, start date, when you need to harvest and when you fertilized last, and when you need to fertilize next. Stay safe and God bless.

If you don’t want to boil them you can buy some food safe no rinse sanitizer such as StarSan. I use it for beer brewing and I trust it.

just wanted to say I loved this and it got me in to hydroponics! I would love to send you pics of my set up! I used 64oz. I have a beautiful big jim and a cayenne (not sure of the varietal)

You need the larger net cups to fit the jar tops or a pool noodle instead with a slit in it to hold the plant. It is cheaper then the net cup.

I've grown a watermelon in kratky. Long as you keep water level in check it'll be fine.

Great video. How often would you have to change the water in the jar.
    Many Thanks

You can eliminate the piece of plastic simply by using a SMALL MOUTH Ball jar instead of a wide mouth Ball jar. OR you can use 3" net cups with the wide mouth Ball jars instead of 2" net cups. All you're doing is trying to make the net cups fit so that you can eliminate the piece of plastic.

I'm growing Bell peppers and chillies using the Kratcy method. They are very slow and suspect it is the lack of oxygen to roots. Perhaps I should use an air stone but well... too late.

The air stone/air pump link isn’t working. Is there another air pump you’d recommend?

Could possibly use a bit of hydrogen peroxide in the water. It's h2o2, has that extra oxygen atom. For plants that like high oxygen via roots.

Can a pepper plant be kept in such a jar indefinitely?

    • @PepperGeek
      @PepperGeek  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Theoretically yes, just have to keep the salt levels in the right zone, keep the water/jar clean, and prune the plant as needed to keep it producing

Ball makes an amber jar that they claim "blocks 99% of uv light" i've been using it with no algae. They are expensive though.

This is dumb. You can buy off-the-shelf net pot lids for buckets. You don't have to paint glass, you don't have to cut metal, and it's a reasonable size for hydroponics.

Your amazon links don't work anymore @peppergeek -- the net pots aren't available and then link to the pump and stones doesn't lead anywhere
