Hurricane Milton made landfall this evening along the Florida West Coast. Significant storm surge can be seen in Venice, Florida, where water was rapidly rising and impacting many homes and businesses. Several feet of storm surge flooding can be seen across area roads. Hurricane force winds have led to many power outages and downed trees.

CNN has people on location in the streets in Tampa, Sarasota, Fort Myers, St. Petersburg and Bradenton. Anderson Cooper got smashed by some river debris. But in this case, you're correct that the storm chasers are getting much better coverage. I live in Canada and I don't have cable and CNN only does a preview for livestreaming so I'm otherwise at the mercy of watching videos whenever they choose to post them. But I'm able to follow live because of these storm chasers! Be safe out there everyone!

I swear that potted plant at 0:25 had quite a few of us in Ryan's live chat upset. A few of us thought it was an animal because the video was in low quality when it went in through his live making it look like a small black and white cat/dog looking about. So glad it wasn't. I was on a tiny phone screen watching his live so was even more convinced when I saw others say it was a cat. Glad I took the time to find this or that darn plant would have had me sad all week.
Thank goodness the Cat 5 changed within 8 hours to a high cat 3. It could have been catastrophic like Helene. I honestly don't know if this is that bad for Florida. Im used to ice storms.
Not as bad as a cat5 would have been but still bad. The flooding is quite bad and some people lost their roofs... Haven't heard anything from my uncle in Venice yet

Yes best report about what its really like. To be in fla hurricane. So glad i didn't move to Florida. Extreme heat for 6 months . Traffic jams everywhere . Horrible weather most of time. Exept around Christmas. A small house costs 250 grand with 5000 dollar property tax a year. Utilities bill of 300 dollars a month. What a hell hole Florida has become

Those 3 people appear to be storm chasers, thrill seekers people out making videos for your viewing. They are usually in 3 to 4 together, one filming.
Great footage of A CATEGORY 1 hurricane. Yes. I challenge anyone to find sustained winds of a higher category recorded by the national weather service as the hurricane crossed the peninsula of Florida. Perhaps there is an isolated downburst somewhere but of all the wind speeds I have tracked, the highest I can find is 88 mph sustained. To be clear, categories of hurricanes are based on sustained wind speeds, meaning it must maintain that speed for a minimum of 1 minute. We are not talking gusts.

This is a little tiny hurricane.. not even a drop of rain here in Miami.. 10-20 mph gusts very few and far apart. Hurricane Andrew covered the entire state of Florida with the eye crossing south Florida.

Actually BEING in the eye of a hurricane is calm. The eye of the storm is calm, but the rings building around it are bringing monstrous amounts of rain and wind gusts up to 100mph. It's the wind and rain before and storm surge after landfall that brings the devastation and destruction. When the eye is above the ocean, it's building pressure and pulling up the ocean water into that eye. Some ends up becoming the torrential rain and some is just released back down into the ocean. And that's where the storm surge comes from. All that ocean water is then rapidly pushed inland and that's where you get these flood walls and flash flooding from surrounding rivers. And this hurricane is expected to bring 13 to 15 ft storm surges in parts of Florida around Tampa, St. Petersburg, Fort Myers. That's the height of the average 1st story of a house.
If you go back through the video, you can probably notice how fast the water is rising around those windows doors on the buildings. The water is almost at the door handle and this is just after landfall. That surge will keep rising and it hasn't even hit high tide yet.
