    I really appreciate that an industry professional is taking the time out of their day to give lessons for free. I'm a sophomore in college and want to go into ux research/design. I'm also taking a major that has a concentration in HCI and I plan on going to graduate school purely for HCI. These videos have been so helpful in developing my knowledge about the topic. Thank you so much!

    so here is my story, when I graduated from high school in 2017, I didn't know what I wanted to do when I grow up, so that's why I went to a community college first to explore different career paths. At first I thought I wanted to be in health care which is why I chose occupational therapy, but when I was volunteering at a OT clinic 2 years ago I decided health care was not the right career for because i am too squeamish for that kind of stuff. When I was on this website call khan academy I stumble upon a career video of people day in life and i saw this person who does user experience research for google and she talks about how she became a ux researcher and her skills for that career. What got me intrigue was that this person was so relatable to me and how we can use social science for tech. Oh yeah the person that I stumble upon on Khan academy is Aidan bryant.

    • @zerotoux
      @zerotoux  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think there's always something that can be improved :)
      If you want to evaluate the effectiveness of something, you can do some benchmarking study + usability, compare it with competitors, and look at the performance or efficiency of using that system, or however you're defining "effectiveness" :)

    Hey Kevin Great video! Quick question why did you end up joining Bentley for your ms? Was it helpful for ux?

  • @elin509
    @elin509 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This is so awesome!! Quick question -- how do you come up with the number of participants you need in a study? I know there is a general rule of thumb from Jakob Nielsen that you only need 5 participants for user testing but is that a good enough to justify the number of participants chosen? What is the difference between choosing 5 participants vs. 8 participants? Thanks again for such a great video, I'll definitely be tuning in for the rest of this series!

    • @zerotoux
      @zerotoux  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question! It's a balance between research speed and diminishing returns. 5 is quick and can get you supposedly 80% of the major usability flaws, and I think it applied to testing one prototype. If you're testing multiple prototypes, you might want to up that number.
      You can always test with 20 people, but it takes time and won't get you any new things.
      8 sounds practical when accounting for no shows, or bad data etc...!!
      btw the 5 users attribution should go to Robert Virzi who wrote "Refining the test phase of usability evaluation: how many subjects is enough?" In 1992! (Not Nielsen)

    • @elin509
      @elin509 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zerotoux Ohhh, that makes sense. Just enough to give you a solid set of data but not too much that it's using too many resources (time, money, etc.). Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification on the right author too!

    Hi Kevin. If these are the research questions (1&2) then what is the underlying research question? The purpose of the study. Are you naming this as the goal but not framed as an overarching research question?
    I'm looking for the main research question here and in my mind it could be "how can we decrease instances of accidental undervoting?"
    Does this make sense?
    I look forward tk your response. Thanks Steve

    • @zerotoux
      @zerotoux  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Steve!! You got it!! The ones I listed are specific research questions, but the overall research objective would be to decrease instances of accidental undervoting. The "how" would come after research and brainstorming!
      Quick crash course:
      So there are two types of objectives: 1) business objectives and 2) research objectives.
      1) Business objectives usually are about getting adoption, increasing revenue etc...you get the idea!
      2) Research objectives are to understand the users more.
      In this case, "decrease undervoting" is sorta like a business objective, but the business of voting is all about the users, so they kinda mesh together.
      Then there are research questions, which help us narrow and scope in how we can address the overall objectives, which are (1) and (2).
      I hope that makes sense! Research OBJECTIVE is different from research QUESTIONS

    Hi Kevin! Love your videos! Just a quick question - I am currently thinking of going in to UX research.I was wondering how important it is to take class in Experimental Design (+knowing how to use SPSS)? Currently a senior majoring in statistics, so I already know basic statistics (not crazy in love with the advanced stats class though)

    • @zerotoux
      @zerotoux  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey DC, just getting to some comments! I think it is extremely important to know experimental design. SPSS is not necessary, but you can learn any tool you want for stats. Schools usually use SPSS, but I know researchers using R or even Google Sheets lol.
