Brilliant. The mark of a great comedian is they're like a warrior. They go to battle with bad jokes and tough audiences and know how to improvise. And watching Johnny do that is beautiful. RIP to the greatest.
I don't know how many times I have mentioned something that was on The Tonight Show and said "When Jonny Carson was the host." And, the person I was talking to would say "You mean when it was still good." In fact, I remember growing up hearing people calling it "The Jonny Carson Show."
Look to "Meeting of Minds" with Steve Allen; a few episodes are posted on TH-cam. Start with Season 1, episode 1, with guests Thomas Aquinas, Theodore Roosevelt, Cleopatra, and Thomas Paine. Steve Allen, first host of The Tonight Show, wrote those scripts and brought together the talented actors to present them in a natural and conversational style. You could almost believe you were listening to the historical figures in debate and discussion.

Chad Quick Carson, when he was young, did incredible stunts on his show, one of the biggest stars on TV and unafraid of making himself look silly. Chad Quick True true. A younger generation used to quick editing and Fallon laughing like a little girl during his interviews may never understand Carson's humor, quick wit, and handling of a crowd. Johnny was something else, that's for sure.
I'd put it just a little differently. Carson could be entertaining even when his jokes were bombing. It helped a lot that he could make fun of himself or joke gently about the tough crowd. So, I guess I suppose that he could make a funny about being unfunny. Damn, I miss him. So much more entertaining than the late nite hosts today.
@@StuartAllgood True, an interview with Doc. S. after Carson's death he spoke of when the jokes bombed, the writers were called on the carpet to explain., and if it happens again soon, they were gone! It was Johnny’s adlib that brought the comedy to the monologue. Johnny was quick on his feet With a comedic wit all his own. There were no off nights with Johnny, every show was a gem.
If someone tells you that Johnny Carson was something special and will never be duplicated, this monologue says it all. Almost none of his scripted jokes worked this night, but he still turned it into something funnier than the monologues you hear from today's so-called talk show hosts.
The confidence of the man when his material lets him down, he just continues. The mark of a true performer. You never surrender. I wonder if he had a little bit of a "talk" with his writers after this disaster of a monologue?
No one else like on him on tv today and NO ONE will ever be able to replace this legendary and multi-talented man who was the BEST EVER on what he did on television!!! Gosh, I sure miss the man in so many ways and I cherish these videos of him and all the memories he gave us. Johnny, you are still alive and well in our hearts and your comedic spirit will forever live on.
+Doug Celeste Somewhere online recently at a web site there was list of top 10 comedians- Johnny Carson wasn't even on it. As far as talk show hosts, Johnny and - Steve Allen- well they were the greats. For LATE late late night- Tom Syder and Craig Ferguson get votes from me. David Letterman (will sure miss him) too, showed how it takes years and layers to develop a great style- he should have had the Tonight Show.
+Katy D Thanks for your reply. Johnny Carson and Steve Allen excelled at being comedians with their skits and having keen senses of humor along with being great talk show hosts with interesting guests. They had it all and are at the top of my list but I like Johnny the best of them all and miss him the most!! Tom Snyder was mainly a fine talk show host with a great voice and personality and he was not afraid to ask the tough questions to his guests. He was a real pro for very interesting in-depth talks late at night. But the bottom line, Katy, is that all of us will have our own list of favorites and that is fine. Cheers!
+aspenrebel You got that right and my dad and I were just talking about that on the phone since he is seeing reruns of Johnny's "Tonight Show" where he lives and just loves them. Johnny was the BEST ever in my opinion for what he did with his talents and that generation of guests he had are almost all gone now. That was an era that will never be again and thank God for the reruns! And today's hosts and guests on these late night shows bore me to death and that is why I keep the tv off at night now. And their personalities annoy me and their "comedy" is NOT funny at all! So yah, it definitely IS "late night crap"!
I missed this when it aired, so seeing it now is a real treat. Two observations: 1. If you're below a certain age, you won't get most of this; if you're above a certain age, you'll find this hysterical. 2. Carson's genius was never on better display than when he delivered the opening monologue, it bombed, and he then turned the bomb into comedy GOLD. Carson: The GOLD STANDARD.
I see those colored curtains and I am immediately transported back to hotel rooms where we stayed with my whole family in a room and watched Johnny while staying up late on vacation. Such nostalgia!
The networks should have ended the late night talk shows when Johnny retired. What followed on all three networks wouldn't make a decent pimple on Johnny Carson's butt!
This my be my favorite bomb of all time! Every late night talk show host has done it, but it usually doesn't last a full 9 minutes! Johnny knew that he was screwed from the first joke, but embraced it and made the bombing itself funny. That's a skill that, I think, only Johnny possessed!
The incomparable Johnny, timing, wit, delivery charisma and authenticity places this gentleman on the echelon of greatness, Ed follows up with his HO HO ho one-liner, priceless.
That's true. back in the 80's always caught Johnny-and damn near always made you feel good. If him or Ed had a couple... before the show all the better....It's too sad now...have to get up to early so always in bed way before 11:30, and was sick of Trump long before he became President and don't need to hear anymore about him if possible.
The saying is that an actor or performer should NEVER look directly at the camera. Johnny ignored that completely, and it was hilarious. Most comedians today would be devastated and hurt if a joke bombed. But Johnny, like Bob Hope, realized quickly that, no, the audience was not laughing AT them. They were laughing WITH them. Brilliant.
Johnny knew his job was to make people laugh. Whether that was at the jokes he made or at his own expense didn't matter. If the audience was enjoying themselves, that's what was important.
Johnny Carson has the record for hosting the Tonight Show for close to thirty years. His retirement, although well-deserved,caused a large void in late-night programming which Leno and Letterman combined never could completely fill.
Leno wasn't bad with what he had...but his trouble was that he followed the King of late night... He was a Jack at best... All the rest were deuces and not in a good way...
saintgauden LOL...are you referring to the "bit" when Ed and Johnny were talking about the Joan Embrey and the local Zoo?....that was a hoot and Ed no doubt had enjoyed a "Liquid Lunch" earlier in the day....Cheers
No other stand-up comic could bomb and still make the audience laugh. One of a kind. Johnny Carson is to late night talk shows what The BeaTles are to music. Icons.
Johnny's style was to tell bad jokes, let them die, and then react. It was his reactions to the dying jokes that was hilarious. I don't think any comic ever did that as well as he did.
There have been many great bomb recoveries from great comedians, however, what sets Johnny apart from the rest of them is that Johnny could bomb for 9 minutes straight and still make it funny! I don't think anyone else would have survived this.
Sokkies we are in a different era. Everything has been coarsened and made disgusting. There’s no innocence left and therefore there can be no “wink and a nod” humor.
WoW! I cant believe I found this clip. I was in the audience for this taping! It was my first trip to the big city and I had just turned 21.....And yes, when Johnny started talking about the name of the new dog that will be in the white house, a guy in the audience yelled out "Barbara", referring to Barbara Bush of course. It was very loud to us in the audience but cant be heard very clear on the tape. Seeing Johnny in person was the highlight of the trip.
Dang -- I miss this man so much!! I got an idea...cancel the idea of replacing Jay Leno and just show all Johnny Carson re-runs. If that do that I will watch -- I promise!
Great idea! I figure if they show them all by the time thirty years of them go by I will be too old or dead and won't care who replaced who. Funny, by definition, a class act and self-deprecating. Or you can watch reality tv
That would work for me. I sure won't watch Fallon. I watched Carson for 30 years, and I'd do it again. His best monologues were like this one. They started to bomb, and he would pull them out. The best ad-libber there ever was! Nothing phased him.
Chris Thorton Johnny Carlson picked the right man to replace him. Jay Leno and his garage has gone past The Tonight Show and is in the new world of the internet with the same type of Good Humor in the vein of Carson. June 5th,2017 Monday
Never will we see the likes of Carson again. He was one of a kind. Certainly, the king of late night!! No one has, and never will, come close. I consider myself very fortunate to have lived in his time.
I think it's interesting that he didn't really care if he bombed. Johnny wasn't stupid and he knew the audience got a kick out of his bad jokes and poor nights on national TV. Watching him struggle was something he knew people liked. He had routines just for that.
Carson is so funny when he’s dying on stage. His improv skills really shine! A beeper goes off: “See if you can call my writers on that damn thing!” And then, “You know it’s not going well when a guy calls for the paramedics during the monologue.” 👏🏻😂
I always found it funnier when Johnny bombed. He'd pivot. The joke was no longer the joke he just told. The joke was him. And Doc and the band would break into "Tea For Two" and Johnny would do a little soft-shoe dance. Then if another joke bombed, they'd break into Tea For Two again in a higher key. It was hilarious.
I recall when the monologue was going right in the dumper, suddenly the band went into "Tea For Two" and Johnny would immediately fall into tap dancing to the tune! It did not happen often, but when it did, I would not be able to catch my breath from laughing. Does anybody else recall catching that magic?
The best deadpan bomb one was where Carson pulled the mike down for a blue light special. I laugh at that... every single time. I haven't been able to find it on TH-cam.
Found one, although not really spontaneous: th-cam.com/video/dHOgD-RZ_vk/w-d-xo.html @@agbook2007 The blue light special is on the collection. I had the VHS tapes, but I think these DVDs are the same thing: www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Johnny-Carson-Collection-1962-1992/dp/B000068WS7
There’s no one absolutely no one who can or think they can replace Mr Johnny Carson always laughed my ass off , I mean always. Thank you mr Carson for always being there for me , when I waited to cry, you made me laugh.
Classic. Even when Carson is bombing he is so funny. Only a pro can make a joke out of bombing on his jokes! Think about how few comedians could really pull that off. Now, clearly the audience was pulling for him, as I was too. Many lesser experienced comedians don't have that luxury. But to be able to make BAD jokes so funny was an incredible skill that he had. I can't stand the group that is doing late night now. Really miss Carson at night...
I always felt that Carson was funnier when he was bombing because he handled it so brilliantly. He is absolutely the all-time maestro. Nobody can touch him.
I use go to bed at 9 and would to set my alarm to wake up at 11 to hear the monologue, then go back to sleep. Did this for 10 years! The man was a genius!!
Ed's background laughter was fucken EPIC, plus Johnny's straight face after his sometimes, corny, but always funny one liners, meant all was good in Late Nightville. Lol
Yes, I agree Rahkin......Johnny knew what he was doing and he knew how to handle things well. If a joke was bad...he went with it.....which made it even funnier. He had a lot of practice too........before getting the Tonight Show on October 1, 1962 he did the game show Whom Do You Trust plus Carsons Celler. He was also writer for the Red Skelton Show and was discovered because Red had accidently fallen during rehearsal and broke his leg and Johnny had to fill in for Red Skelton doing the monologue ......betcha didn't know that............You can thank Red Skelton the great comic for giving Johnny his start ..............
I don't understand it, but there is something so funny about a bad joke, especially several bad jokes, and seeing a comedian dying before your very eyes. That's comedy. Sure do miss Johnny. He was my late night companion for many years.
3:48 When Johnny asks 'is there a revolver in the house', would have been funny if someone in the audiance would have yelled, "yes but it's not your caliber"! :)
This is why Carson will never be replaced as king of late night TV--his personality, timing, and self-deprecating wit are unmatched! (His monologue does kind of start out "flat" but the great ones ALWAYS manage to make lemonade from lemons, as Johnny does here!!)
Great! I was stationed in Germany from 83 thru 91. I missed all those Tonight Shows. One monologue down!! In the 70's while in high school I always waited to watch the monologue at 10:30 pm befire going to bed and wondered why I was so tired the next day. But it was worth it!
Three out of every four jokes in this monologue bombed, and yet I just laughed harder than I have in weeks. The funniest man ever.
Two writers fired that night.
Does anyone know what dog's name was called out by someone in the
audience at 4:38? He acted as if it was real nasty kept shaking his head.

@@kareemwail4495 He had one joke, and now he's gonna have to find a new one.
Conan’s good. Not Carson level good, but he’s definitely better than those other twerps.
You sound like the boomer that I am. Colbert is every bit as funny and entertaining as Carson ever was.
He's so good when he's bad that it's hard to tell how much is really designed to be like that.
Classy humor. The pendulum has swung so far that there has to be another great classy comedian that will arise very soon. It will be fun to see it.

We can only hope. TV has become almost unwatchable.

Very cool
Wonderful idea. It would be nice to revisit a time when not EVERYONE on television was shameless, inane, and/or insane.
Chris Thorton Johnny Carlson picked the right man to replace him. Jay Leno and his garage has gone past The Tonight Show and is in the new world of the internet with the same type of Good Humor in the vein of Carson.

I think MeTV shows Carson reruns right now. They're great.
Ed's loving every minute of this. Some of Johnny's funniest moments were his reaction to bombing.
Carson was just as funny, with his reactions, when the material WASN'T that good, as when it was good.
Late night needs all new hosts Carson the best
Never will we see the likes of Carson again. He was one of a kind. Certainly, the king of late night!! No one has, and never will, come close. I consider myself very fortunate to have lived in his time.
I damned near died from laughter when the guy said "Barbara" @ 4:34
"See if you can call my writers on that damned thing!"
When things went bad and the jokes bombed Johnny was the funniest .
+baler johnson Absolutely. As a kid, I had my best laughs when he was getting none and it cause him to have to be spontaneous.
I think it's interesting that he didn't really care if he bombed. Johnny wasn't stupid and he knew the audience got a kick out of his bad jokes and poor nights on national TV. Watching him struggle was something he knew people liked. He had routines just for that.
+baler johnson True but he could milk it better than anyone.
never to be duplicated
Severan Vallery Amen Brother. Can you imagine what he'd say about Trump and the Presidential race?
Ed laughing at all the bombed jokes makes it even funnier.
Always thought Ed was a bore.
He may have been bombed himself that night.
Carson had that special comedic gift, even when his material was bombing, he made people laugh.
Remember when he'd get a bad reaction and he would say " Bombo"?
Late night talk shows have NEVER been the same.
Carson is so funny when he’s dying on stage. His improv skills really shine! A beeper goes off: “See if you can call my writers on that damn thing!” And then, “You know it’s not going well when a guy calls for the paramedics during the monologue.” 👏🏻😂
Johnny Carson
No one even comes
Close to his talent
The only man in history that can totally bomb and delight his audience at the same time...I sure miss his incredible talent!
20 years old and I love these late night shows comedy was definitely a lot better back then . Never be another Johnny!
I recall when the monologue was going right in the dumper, suddenly the band went into "Tea For Two" and Johnny would immediately fall into tap dancing to the tune! It did not happen often, but when it did, I would not be able to catch my breath from laughing. Does anybody else recall catching that magic?
I remember Johnny’s tsp dancing when he was really bombing. I’ve been looking all over TH-cam for a clip of this - does one exist?
The best deadpan bomb one was where Carson pulled the mike down for a blue light special. I laugh at that... every single time. I haven't been able to find it on TH-cam.
Found one, although not really spontaneous: th-cam.com/video/dHOgD-RZ_vk/w-d-xo.html

It’s not the words you use or the jokes you tell, it’s the persona. That’s why no one is better at late night tv than the great Johnny Carson.
When late night comedy was happy and funny. I miss those days.
He had thee best 'take' to the audience! That always got me. The 'Look' to the camera! Perfection!
Damn, I sure miss those days. That's when late night tv was funny. Johnny Carson was the best.
I use go to bed at 9 and would to set my alarm to wake up at 11 to hear the monologue, then go back to sleep. Did this for 10 years! The man was a genius!!
No body could bomb as good as Johnny!
Johnny just kept on trucking
Johnny Carson isn't like a legend, legends are like Johnny Carson
Ed's background laughter was fucken EPIC, plus Johnny's straight face after his sometimes, corny, but always funny one liners, meant all was good in Late Nightville. Lol
Ed was the perfect 2nd banana 💖⭐️. His background laughing is what makes Johnny’s show biz that much funnier!
The BEST "late night host" ever!
This guy never gave up..
I was born in the wrong era.
Johnny was the best...period !!
Wow u mean 2 tell me that u can b funny without being vulgar who knew. Thanks 4 the memories Johnny. 😎
The past generations did.
I wish I could press the like button thousand times for this comment!

@@DrZaius3141 No, they just weren't dumb enough to think that any joke about the way a terrorist leader dresses has anything to do with racism.

I really appreciate you posting this. You did justice to the quality of video, brought memories, enjoyed watching. Thank's
Never took himself seriously. Love him.
Eisenhower warned us of the uh... What the hell did he warn us about? haha

Great! I was stationed in Germany from 83 thru 91. I missed all those Tonight Shows. One monologue down!! In the 70's while in high school I always waited to watch the monologue at 10:30 pm befire going to bed and wondered why I was so tired the next day. But it was worth it!
This was on the day I was born!
And not a single F-bomb, how did he do it? Oh right he actually had talent. RIP Johnny.
He wouldn't have been allowed to curse.
That intro/music surely brings back great memories. Loved the original Carson show.
