How to pull rebar out of the ground

  • The previous owner of the property left me with a number of 8 foot long reinforcing rods driven into the ground. Using a couple of ancient mechanical devices (lever and wedge) along with a good pair of locking pliers, I show you how to pull them right out the ground.

This video just saved my life. My previous owner also decided it was a good idea to secure a 10” planter box with 4’ rebar. After digging 2’ down through the wet clay to clear enough room to twist and pull out 8 of them using nothing but raw, brute strength. But there were two left that I just couldn’t get. So after an hour of pulling I just kneeled there in the mud, back shot, arms and legs like jello, dejected and feeling defeated. So I finally did what my wife suggested and looked for a TH-cam video and yours was the first hit. This worked like a charm. Can’t believe I wasted all afternoon digging and pulling the others I feel so dumb. Anyway, thanks a million.

Brilliant stuff. We used a pipe wrench to turn the rebar and get it loose. Then put on the vice grips. Tried lever to get it going. No go. Then I pulled out the Jack-all. Vice grips + Jack-all - cats meow!

Thank you a bunch! This saved me hours of work. I'm cleaning up at my folks ' home and there are plenty of rebars I had to remove from the ground. God bless you.

Update: worked with little effort! Pulled out 6 that were about 3ft deep with not a lot on the top to grab onto

Use a pipe wrench to turn the rebar or drive it down a couple of inches to break it loose before you start lifting.

wrap a chain around rebar and somehow attach the same chain to a floor jack and good luck

An easier pry is using two 2X4’s on edge on both sides and then a cinder block as the leverage point.

I snapped one 2x4 on the one in the tree stump. Didn't try two at once. I agree a cinder block would help define the leverage point.

Thanks. I hope it was helpful. You shouldn't have too much trouble unless you have a tree growing around one.

    A couple tips.
Use the lumber upright with the 1 1/2" side on the ground. You are letting the board bend causing you to lose some mechanical advantage and then your board breaking. Use an appropriately sized board (able to stay mostly streight and stable for the load you are lifting) and length of board to get the correct advantage. Depending on your lifting strenght and physical stability under a strain. It may be better to put fulcrum blocks between you and the post. That way you are pushing down and your lifting strength is enhanced by your full weight pushing down. Move the fulcrum nearer or farther as well as higher or lower as needed to get the correct lift height and force multiplication that makes a lever one of the best inventions ever devised by the human race. For a concrete post the lifting distance per push or lift will be short but very very powerful.
Once you can get a few mm of lift just shift the fulcrum slightly and do it again then again till it is out.
I have fun teaching the neighbor kids how they can lift cars and stuff. It is a blast to see what they can come up with a bunch of blocks and boards.

*catastrophic failure hahahahahahaha* that poor wedge
i've pulled rebar and ground rods using pipe wrench and 'ol bumper jack, have two rebarbs next to the avocado tree trunk only an inch sticking out, gonna try your vice grip hack. got lot's of 2x4's use a piece last night to remove transmission bearing. brother said "you need a brass hammer" looked at him *"hold my cerveza"* 🍺 removed and drank it all up
    *Cerveza for you* 🍺
    *that's what she said*

Thanks for the show. My metal carport is held down by 3 ft long rebar pins and I'm looking for the means to pull them up without damaging them,

    • @franklylivin
      @franklylivin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This method should work, but expect the vise grips to scratch up the rebar a bit. When prying up, only do a little at a time before repositioning the vise grips so you don't bend the bar. Hopefully after you get it to budge a little, you'll be able to just pull it straight up. Assuming there isn't a tree trunk growing around it...
