I have the 2002 CR250. If you were to go see it in my garage, it’s like looking at an almost new bike with about 3-4 hours on it, and garage kept with a cover on it for the last 22+ years. Super Cherry bike.

I was 17 in 1984 and the cr 250 that year was so fastlight and agile..it just was heads and tails above the rest. Though the yz was very fast that year. and was still the best till about 1988 when the kx started to become a good 250..the 1984 cr lineup was the beautiful crs ever in my opinion

I had 2 of these. One was ported with 256 psi. The other was stock with 216 psi. Great bikes. Tsught me alot about rebuilding bikes on my own....

@@Dirtbikerepair yeah it was a great time. I bought the red one with the porting job didnt know it until i put new piston in it. I bought another planning to get a parts roller for the first bike. But ended up with a bike in good shape, much cheaper than the first.
Rebuilt the second one with new piston, reeds, clutch packs complete and inner/pressure plate. I also filed the old hub.
There was a big difference in raw low end power between the stock and the ported ones. I wish i could have just kept them😢😢😢

Never had any pinging/pre detonation. In fact it ran so well i just wished i wasnt too stupid enough to let both go. 😂😂😂 now ill never be able to see them again.

For me, I'd say it was the 1987 CR250R. That was the time they first used the Showa Cartridge forks. Actually it's not only me who have said that, I've read it so many times in different articles.
I think the 87 was a pretty cool bike for sure and for what it was against in its era i think it was defiantly the best.. and I think all Honda's championships show that as well.
But I don't think it was the best one ever made personally. From the beginning of all the CR250 (1971) till the last CR250 (2007)
I still say the 2001 was the greatest year, maybe not the best frame... but it had the best engine they have made.

I had an 01 and I got such a great deal on it it was showroom quality and I sold it when I found out I was going to be a dad now I have an 02 and I kick myself in the ass everyday wishing I never got rid of it...
Well it took me a long time to finally get my 2001, I just couldn’t find one that I wanted in the condition I was looking for.. but I’m happy I have it. The power is just different. The whole feel really. The 02 is a really good bike too. I like mine, and the fact you can still get most parts.. but it’s not a 2001.
Im busy putting one back together with my son right now . new rings carb kit coming for this weekend and it good to gi again ..

A old race buddy has one sitting pretty ,and nice n shiney in his living room ! Bouht it brand new off of the dealership floor and set it up for. Long time storage and it has never been started by anyone to his knowledge ...
He did however did install a hand built highly polished aluminum fuel tank on it

I have a 1997 cr 250 think first year with the aluminum frame. It is faster than I can handle I go easy with the throttle.
the 1997 is the first year aluminum frame, also had a single rad setup instead of a right and left side rad. its a pretty interesting bike, same motor really.. they do pull really good!!

I've got a 2002 that I've done most of your upgrades on and it's still got less than 10 total time on it from when I bought it brand new because I got injured and didn't get to ride it anymore! I should sale it but it has sentinel value and I am sure I couldn't replace it so I would have to get a lot of money for it!
Sounds like a pretty awesome bike, when the RC valve is set right and with a few upgrades the 2002 is a really great bike! Sound like you have a nice one.

Ya but when the rc valve hits the piston its not so great.
Plus 02 was end of the good motor.
2001 was the last year of the mechanical power valve, 2002 has the RC Valve. not sure I'm reading your comment right I think @@dormantmenace
Had one it was a beast so much quicker than my ‘30 CR 250 was the rc valve engine felt almost electric , tamer if you may

I had both a 2000 and a 2001 CR250. The only change was carburetor. '00 had a Keihin and the '01 a Mikuni. I preferred the '00. My previous ride was a '94 CR250 and I liked the steel frame best. Thus I now ride '22 KTM 250SX and a '23 KTM 450XCWF
Well I agree that the mikuni is not great.. and the only reason I think people consider the 2001 over the 2000 is because it was the last year. I also really like the steel frame CR250. They definitely feel different.
How do you like the ktm 450xcwf? I have personally never tried one
@Dirtbikerepair it's excellent for trails. Being an old 2 stroke guy I was worried about flame outs, and delayed throttle response. Neither have been an issue and I'm never looking for more power. I've only got about 10hrs on it so far so I can't vouch for its reliability yet.

I have the same bike 2001 cr250 and I put the kehin carb from 2000 the bike give dust to anything.... totally the best cr ever.
Im 99% sure the Carb that came on the 2000 CR250 is a Kehin PWK 38mm Air striker so its the same carb Im running, and run on all my bikes actually, great carbs. Im sure your bike pulls really good setup like that too. Thanks for the comment and for watching

@@Dirtbikerepair so my 2001 is stock. Would replacing the stock carb with the Kehin striker increase the overall power, or just change the power delivery?
@@gstevens9707 I found that changing mine made the power more usable. So it feels more powerful. But it’s actually not increasing the overall power of the bike.. just kinda unlocking what is there.. if that makes sense
@@Dirtbikerepair I think I understand. How about Boyensen reeds over stock? Is that something that will improve performance? Also, I heard adding a Stealhy flywheel weight is a good upgrade to change the power curve. Any thoughts on the reeds or the flywheel weight? Thanks for responding!
How does the pipe compare to others? PC or FMF? Looking at one for my 96.
Well I have not seen the hygge pipe for the 92-96 cr250 personally but I have owned a lot of fmf and pro circuit pipes for a lot of bikes. Even the ones I replaced with a hygge. The Hygge is a lot stronger! You can actually feel the strength. For example. My cr500. Would rip fmf gnarly pipes. And I would have to constantly weld them back together. The hygge…. Well I think it kinda laughs at it. It so strong and they always just work. I have been thinking of getting one for my 96, But obviously they are not cheap.. but they just seem to last and last. Best pipes I have ever owned
Hygge has only just introduced the 2001 pipe late 2023. I ordered one in the first batch I'm pretty sure and I didn't get it till December of 2023, right before xmas.. I'm really curious to know if anyone ever get the chance to try both that is.
I'm not sponsored by any company but having owned a lot of pipes and seen how all the companies hold up.. and how they work. The Hygge pipe is by far my personal favorite company to deal with and the performance upgrade is pretty noticeable.
Now I want to try and find a FMF SST... I don't think they still make them though. anyone know ??? @@jaysmokey

I’ve road an 01 and I have an 03. 01 had a good bit more top end but felt handling awful compared to the 03. I do have pipes, kehin carb, and V force 3 reeds but my 03 has a lot of bottom end yeah not the hit on the bottom like a 450 but I can lug it out going up hill and not have to worry about it stalling.
That’s interesting about the handling. The frames are different, but don’t know if I have noticed the same. I will check that out with my 04, and 02. Sadly I don’t have an 03 to do a direct comparison.

What's the jetting on your PWK Airstriker?
I have the 2001 CR250 with the Airstriker, can't seem to jet it right. bogs on mid rpm.
I will look in my book and get you the jetting I use, I also run mine on T2 vp race fuel. So my jetting might not be perfect for your situation. When you say it bogs in mid rpm… is it like a run out of fuel bog? Or more like a stutter or hesitation?

i have a 175 main , 45 pilot in mine, also my needle clip is in the 3rd spot i, also have that my air screw is at 1.75 turns out.
if you are feeling a bit of a hesitation it might not all be the carb.. have you ever cleaned the Power valve on your bike.. might be something out in there. or it could be really gummed up and not opening at the right time.

I do agree that the 96 is an amazing bike!! And definitely the best of all the Honda steel frame bikes.. but I don’t know if a stock 96 vs a stock 2001. I think the 2001 has it beat. Just better suspension on the 01. But it’s definitely a hard choice.. also hard to compare really.

I’m actually looking to buy a 2000 cr250 pretty soon! I keep seeing that everyone says the 2001 is the bees knees, is there a big difference between 2000 and 2001?
There are a few differences but nothing major that I can remember off the top of my head, the 2001 is the last year for that motor so that’s why they just slightly rank higher then the 2000. But pretty much the exact same bike. I would be happy to own the 2000 or the 2001

The 02+ RC valve motor with porting and case work done puts any other 250 2 stroke motor to shame and will rip your arms out of their sockets. Bunch of old heads go nuts over those stiff 01’s.
I do like the 02, most people i find get the RC valve out of spec and then the bike will feel like it is having carb problems... but when they are set right they do work good.

Agreed. They do need more attention absolutely. And yes, a lot of owners aren’t aware of not letting the cables develop slack. Setup is key on them, they are indeed finicky as a whole. But when done right, they are violent.

These frames were still terrible. 93-96 is the best overall 03+ best chassis. The old HPP if you purely want engine performance.
I do like the steel frame bikes, I own a 96 and a 93.. I had an 02, 03, 04.. but honest I still think the 2001 power and frame combo is a perfect fit.. might just be me.. don’t get me wrong I love the steel frame.. that’s why I own 2 of them lol

92, then 05-07, then 96, then 2000 before the 01. That mikuni carb is junk.
I agree the stock carb on the 2001 is not that great. But replace that with a PWK and it’s an amazing bike. Any reason why you have the 92 listed first I’m curious ?

@@Dirtbikerepair 92 had a chassis that handled much like the 21/22+ it turned amazing. Could benefit from a steering damper though. They choppered it out in 93 because riders would tuck the front. 92 also had unique porting where it came on strong and pulled hard, which was also too much for many riders. Every year after 92 was trying to make the bike more tame in every way.
That's pretty interesting, I personally don't think i have ever ridden a 92. I have a 1993 I'm just starting another build series on.. but I'm sure it will not be exactly the same as they were in 1993, I think I'm going to have to change out some of the front end.. stay tuned to see how it goes i guess @@keelangerken5154

Never experienced that after riding hundreds of hours in the desert.
with a motor upgrade the last generations of cr 250s are far superior to the 00 and 01.. 97 thru 99 just sukk period..00 and the 01 vibrate the shit outta you and dont handle all that well they beat the shit outta u they are too rigid..everything about the 02 and is better than the 01 except the motor thats qhy people race the 03s and on way more that the 01s ..but the 01 is the best two stroke motor ever made period

Nope, pass on the airstrike. They're good carbs but with the s7 nozzle/needs jet, 420 main, 30 pilot, h75 needle on 3rd clip position and 1.5 turns out on the air screw. The tmx is even better. The s7 is the key
That's actually good to know, I have not had bad luck with the TMX but i honestly found that the PWK air striker really helped give the bike a bit more at low throttle position. 0 - 1/2 throttle area.

@@Dirtbikerepair the stock tmx came with an s9 needle jet, which was too rich a caused the bogs and almost impossible tunability that they were known for. The s7 is a night and day difference, like it's not even the same carb anymore

I had an 2001 cr 125 with the new frame at the time and makuni CB. Great bike but Not enough power for me. Jumped up to the yz 250.

Mostly the frame…. The 1997-1999 use a very similar frame.. it might be the “worst” frame.. but motor is pretty much the same. Also I personally don’t like the single rad on the 1997-1999 bikes
Had a 2001 CR250, traded it to a guy plus a couple grand to replace all the floors with Mohawk Revwood (high quality shit) in my whole house... 2500 sq/ft house.. Just shows how in demand these 2001 CR250s are. I am currently working on a 1994 on my channel. Big fan of the steel framed CRs now. Subbed, bud!

I would Agree... the last steel frame of the 96 is a pretty awesome bike. but the aluminum frame and better suspension.. stock, of the 2001 is pretty hard to beat

I’ve got an 01 I bought as a new leftover in 2009. I need to swap the stock Mikuni out as well. Pretty finicky carb.

Well congratulations on owning one of the best 2 strokes ever made. Hopefully some of the builds on the channel like the 1993 cr250. Project 93 engine videos will help you with your bike. Same motor pretty much other then the pistons on the 2001 a bit different. But almost the same

I learnt something that CRs went eleronic valves after 01 Yamaha was doing electronic valve servos ypvs in 80s , hondas engine must of been the pinical of two stokes if they didn't change it for a decade and bike companys like to evolve probably why they went to 4 stroke,
sad they stopped making them ,I had 86 Cr 125 and 250s rocket ships

hey no problem, I had a PJ on this 2001 before, and I had a PJ on my CR500, both have PWK 38mm Air Strikers now... and the power is way more usable.. its just a better carb. @@deatrichpatterson1999

@Dirtbikerepair I had a 96, my brother had a 94 and I thought his was just a bit faster and handled corners just a bit better. Both were stock with the same Bill's pipe.

@Dirtbikerepair Oh for sure. I have since switched to YZ250 and my bro has a 2000 CR. It's stock so it's a bit rigid like the 99, the '01 was a bit more... forgiving. 😆
I personally thought the 02-07’s are the best. I’ve had them all and like the last gen framed bikes the best myself.
I really like the bikes with the “RC” Valve too. But the older Gen motor with mechanical power valves is really hard to beat.

@@Dirtbikerepair I installed a lectron on my 02 and it really woke the bike up. Insane power like the 01.
@@TheRossillini well that’s good to know. I have only really played with a few of the lectron carbs. Both being there H series. They seem ok. I just don’t really like the clearance they have. Once they are on tho they seem to work pretty good
