This is how we cut into the chimney to install counter flashing, with a DeWALT Angle Grinder using a diamond Blade wheel for cutting masonry . The other videos to come will be of the install of new shingles and flashing.

Thank God for this video I was looking for someone explain why they cut through the brick instead of just mortar which everyone in these roofing comments on other videos say lol I never stepped my counter flashing in the mortar because it never stays in and can cause even more problems day one lol these guy kept saying you shouldn’t cut the brick… that’s the only way to do it and it’s called reglet counter flashing and most manufacturers recommend this way anyway. Jeez thanks for a good video and sweet counter flashing job man

The counter flashing is bent and going to go into a cut in the brick. Once it's installed it will be sealed. Are you saying it's going to leak because it's not stare stepped into the mortar joints?

Super neat and tidy with the ice and water around the chimney. I don't think I've ever seen that done that neatly. I'm curious to see how you do the back of the chimney, I've always made one continuous backpan.

Just a little tip ,next time when you cutting put the blower 'ON ' against the chemeney so the dust wont be on your face :) 👍🏾

I like to prime the deck for the ice-and-water…adheres better. Even just some epdm primer. I’ll put metal tape at the corners of the I&W and over the top of it, on the chimney too.
You wanna take a roller to that I&W as well.
Easy money
The bricks your cutting into will spall in 5-10 years and start leaking. The masonry units expand and contract independent from each other. You preventing them from moving when you cut through the brick like this. This is way a masonry counter flashing is to be installed for each course of shingles. Stay in the bed joints and mortar it in properly. This allows for independent movement as thermodynamic conditions change.
I wonder what is a reasonable price for job like this. I'll get a quote for same job. I just got a leak around the chimney.
thanks for the videos, nice work. I like the single piece of counter flashing versus stepped. Is there any advantage of one over the other? or is just personal preference?
some people like the look of stair-stepped. I think that's more to go wrong and more work than necessary. I would say it's really personal preference.
Do you recommend putting ice and water underneath the drip edge or over? On a home with gutters on 90% of roof edges, do you recommend not using drip edge and instead use a gutter apron? I’ve heard some people use both, drip edge and then gutter apron over the top. What do you think?

I noticed that they was any waterproof underlayment under the shingles??
The only thing we do different is turn the ice and water so that the big sticky overlap part is on the roof instead of the chimney. I figure that there isn't s problem with water getting up behind the counter flash but it might travel out from the chimney.

Why did you cut the bricks so deep? I think you only need 1/2" to 1" depth. Thanks for sharing!!
I didn't cut it deep it's only 3/4 inch Max
For neophytes could you describe the materials sometimes? If we have a little home project, or we want to know what our roofer is recommending-- we would not go to the store and ask for some "metal" for example. What would the names of these materials be? Composition, finish, and thickness, when applicable? Optional materials? Copper or lead is obvious, but not sure what you are using.

That's dangerous . With no guard on the angle grinder . Y not just get a small blade the 4 1/2 inch one then you can use the guard . Instead of fitting a 5 inch blade with out the guard . As angle grinders can get stuck and jump
