You might think that this is humorous! But one season I bought at Big Lots! Inexpensive Easter Baskets after Easter. wired them into trees and viola! My neighbor at one time asked me "why did you put multiple baskets in your trees?" told him to hopefully provide a start for the morning doves to nest. As he looked up in one tree at a beautifully woven basket, there was a tail sticking out of the basket, a MOM. nesting there! It has worked so many times, so colorful, and trust me, these wild birds loved them and raised their young, try it out!

If you had rats/mice in there, they probably came up from tunnels. The entrance would be well hidden under the landscape cloth.

Would think leaving a trap loaded with an egg might be a diversion for a rat. Rats will climb the wood poles and rafters. It is crazy how easy it is for them. Snakes obviously can do the same. Snakes can come up thru tunnels too. You might want to run small gage wire over the top of the ground and up sides of building and Avery. Then cover with the mulch. Would be a lot of work but a chicken snake will also eat the pigeons. You have to put think the little stinkers.
We had Muskovy ducks we had pack rats that came and stole their eggs and their eggs were really big, so yes, a rat can take an egg. They will tunnel in from outside the pen
I wonder if it would be safer to add metal at the base of all upright posts that could be climbed to access the nest..it would at least rule out rats.
@@debbiehardy6250 rats can climb up the walls and across the ceiling. The floor will need to be lined with the quarter inch metal. Wall to wall. Rats only need about a quarter inch whole to get into something.
You are definitely providing every opportunity if they want to lay again. Your a great caregiver Brooke.
I think you are onto the right path as it will offer them an option to rebuild.

I agree, with the fact that rodents will tunnel under landscape cloth. My suggestion is remove the mulch put hardware cloth on top of the landscape cloth. Then top it off with the mulch.the floor needs to have the same barrier as the sides and ceiling. Good luck Brooke!
Maybe a free standing nest platform? Like a pole with an appropriate sized square platform. Good idea you have Brooke
That design of a single pole with a large flat platform centered on top; is successfully used by wildlife protection, & scientific preservationists.
Those types of nest platforms near shorelines & in mountainous areas. And banned human hunting & killing them; brought the Bald Eagles & Pelicans back from near Extinction.
That might be a good idea, as long as predators cannot get to the platform, & a ridge around it to keep chicks from falling off it

Tree bands like they use in the wild to protect the nestlings. If Brooke were to get those tree bands and make them square, all the way up to the nest then nothing from the ground would be able to climb up to the nest! Not even snakes.

Good morning Brooke , I think you have gave the Crown Victorian Pigeons a great new setting for a nest and provided new materials… I hope they use it and build under the cover and it will be a joy to watch them start again ! I love how you all care about all of your animals and birds ! You try to provide a good and safe environment ! It’s like Nugget, none of us along with you all don’t like he’s in the open and not eating.. but nature has taken over and he’s doing what is natural for him to do . I’m sure he misses all the love and attention he got, but he’s doing his Daddy duties!! I sure hope new birds are to come for the pigeons and Emus !!

What a fabulous idea. Some (one) thing came in and stole their egg. A home invasion! I think your idea will work! And, you’ll have a camera on it. I think you should hide another one or two cameras and never tell anyone. Providing them with new building materials should encourage them to try again. 🤞 Very exciting to see if they build a new home.❤ 🏠

I love how you keep us up on the VCP, however I miss sesing the other featherd friends. The turkeys, ducks, the call ducks, peacocks etc. Oh yeah the geese. Since the chickens are in the school bus we dont get to them anymore.

New adventures! Spring is such a fun time. My only knowledge re Victorian Crown Pigeons is via the Smith family so i have zero info to share. But here's an observation: their first nest with a solid base (plywood), might have been less appealing. It's possible airflow through the nest is preferred. The new platform seems to make sense to me - for whatever that is worth. Major kudos to Brooke for her planning and forethought! Who knows - VCP-TV may return!!
