Henry who? Thanks for the update on my home town. I attended Gold Hill Baptist Church for nearly 7 years, Sunday mornings and evenings. The original village was so different to what it is today. It is great to see the original buildings and imagine the village as it once was.

You're welcome! Thank you for joining me! I'm Henry Allum. Sadly since this video the church has moved to a new location and most of the surrounding buildings have been demolished. If you have a look at Part 5 you'll see how that corner of Gold Hill is now.

Thanks Henry. The church was overcrowded in 1981. It took them my lifetime to do this. It is a popular church, but gains in one direction can compromise another. It is the old pattern of the villages which grew over centuries from comings and goings that interest me. Chalfont St Peter is at its heart, the old village. The rest is just new development.

Thank you, Henry, for highlighting the series of plaques which were designed and installed by The Celfunde Inheritance, Chalfont St Peter Parish Council's local history and heritage group. Chalfont St Peter has long been known as 'The Gateway to the Chilterns'. Gold Hill was named for the profusion of yellow gorse which once flourished there. Many years ago, villagers turned out in force to manually dig out the gorse and flatten the top of the common so they could play football there. The history of this village is indeed fascinating. Do check out local author DJ Kelly's books on local history. They include 'The Famous & Infamous of the Chalfonts & District', 'The Chalfonts & Gerrards Cross at War', 'Buckinghamshire Spies & Subversives' and 'Bulstrode: Splendour & Scandals of a Buckinghamshire Mansion'.

Great Video Henry, I've visited Chalfont St Peter several times and I looked into the history of the church. The Parish church is notably built-in brick and could be considered to be Victorian but is in fact 18th century. The church collapsed in 1708 and was rebuilt in brick in 1714 to have further restorations since. There is a church in Chalfont St Peter noted on John Speeds' map of 1610 which means an earlier church existed probably from medieval times as Chalfont is noted in the Domesday Book of 1086. In the churchyard are some interesting tombs that have skulls carved on them if I recall and the snake eating its own tail which symbolizes infinity.

Called Gold hill because there were gorse bushes years ago. I was born and bred in Chalfont. Married in the parish church

The part about the old Fairthorpe works is interesting they moved up to Denham opposite the airfield and they are still there I believe. Makes me want to track down a Fairthorpe Electron Minor and restore.

Great video Henry. I lived in Gold Hill North for 10 years and I never knew Market Place was originally called Gold Hill Lane - fascinating. You didn’t mention the beacon, as you walked past it, on Gold Hill.

Thank you for watching and pleased to hear you like my channel. I'm not sure about the Victoria Cross winners, I'd suggest asking on a Chalfont St. Peter Facebook Group.

@@HenrysAdventuresI’d love to live somewhere like that once day. Reminds me of where I grew up but unlike Chalfont my area has gone a bit mad and too many ultra modern homes and no real community spirit
