I am an old man now, but when I was young, an old man told me that no matter how big the job, if you work on it a little bit every day it will get done. I've discovered myself, that working slower on some big jobs allows more time to work on smaller jobs that are also important and time to think of improvements and catch mistakes on the bigger jobs. The big jobs do get done. Keep on keeping on.
My girlfriend taught me to mound wet sand up in a pile and shape the concrete upside down... We use leaves as imprints also.... Just mound wet sand in the depth and shape you want, lay the leaf or leaves and cover in concrete...cover it with a wet newspaper or paper towel to keep it moist... It takes a few days to dry... Sometimes a week is the humidity is high...
Jess, I so understand your plant dome! It seems (from watching many other videos) that ladies need a space of beauty, serenity and wonderment. All the other things - like home, yard and projects - are a must - but we need a place to go.... In our vegetable/flower backyard, I have the small porch to decorate (bling) with crafts and lovely things just for me. I am 68, live in the Pacific Northwest, WA state, with my husband. He enjoys the riverfront yard larger deck - watching the many birds, rabbits, etc... all with the forest surrounding. Your home (and AZ!) is very interesting to me! The hard work you and your husband do will bring you both much joy in the years to come. Be sure to make each 'step' as you go ---- senior person friendly. It will be a blessing in about 30 years! Continued greatness in the next videos, that I look forward to watching! P.S. I too, skip from project to project and make much progress on everything. You're both doing great!
Good morning to my favorite Dirt Bag couple. You guys are doing great on your house and videos. Don't worry about what others want you to do. Just keep doing what you are and enjoying your lives the best you can. Take care. I'm looking forward to the next video
With your soil, I think an impermeable barrier diverting water twenty feet away from the outside wall is the best way to protect an underground structure that is to be a foundation.
Awesomw work you guys! I love seeing all the different projects going on. The little dome garden is cute and will bring so much life. I cant wait to see maybe some more dome gardens popping up around the property :)
Optimist: It's half full. Pessimist: It's half empty. Engineer: The container is twice as big as it needs to be. Physicist: The container is completely full, half with water and half with air. Loved the walk with Crew, that horse looked like it wanted to make friends lol. I like how you did the stairs. I was worried about the cement just filling everything in, but you did the cob first and it looks great (even if unfinished) and using so much less cement. I was wondering for a while about the dome's outside walls eroding or falling, I'm glad you said something. It sounds like a no-brainer now, that yeah, you just put more back up lol. The geodesic dome is looking great! After that rain all the colors really popped! Great job Jess! Always looking forward to your next videos, have a good one!
Hopefully the "soil cement" was applied thick enough so it will hold up to the foot traffic. I hope Jim will provide lighting in the stairway yo make sure one doesn't or lose their footing.
Great to see that the earthworks have helped. It's also nice that you are in a much stronger mental space to tackle the root cellar. The stairs look fantastic. For growing food, use your compost bays for growing pumpkins and water melons. They don't affect the compost and they grow much more vigorously there than a ditch with some compost added. You can eat the leaves cooked, peeled stems, flower petals, young pumpkins and the ripened pumpkins last all through the winter. Other food that you can harvest are amaranth leaves, goose foot, and malva. Prickly pear is fantastic if you learn how to remove the prickles from the young pads.
Progress is progress, no matter what type or where it is happening. After all of this time of working on structures, Jessica can sure use the gardening therapy. Maybe you should get some Swiss chard, kale, and a few other fall plants started indoors under lights. Maybe upstairs in the dome. I love germinating seeds and nurturing them along.
It's so good seeing how this has come along. JESS'S garden has so many lovely plants in it. Vitex is such a beautiful plant. It's fragrant leaves and flowers are a magnet for pollinators. The birdbath turned out lovely too. Your creative touches are so unique and I live the layered uses of everything. I'm glad you made headway on the stairs too, and the monsoon rains didn't damage it again. Your patience on this build and dealing with setbacks has been admirable.
Love the new vibe! Very engaging and great content. You two are a great balance for each other ❤. Yes, you've got a tremendous amount of work to do, but it's important to include the creativity and beauty in each day. Can't wait for the next video!
Do you ever feel like you're living in a Rango town ... 4:43 just a few seconds, it was a cute little movie with Johnny Depp ✌ .. You can tell the horse is a pet because it lowered it's head in a submissive posture .. I will bet it's very thirsty and misses it's human's ❤
Observation: When the two of you worked together you get a lot done. You get the goal completed and there is great satisfaction in a completed project. Working independently… 1) takes far more time to complete a project 2) you don’t stay focused on the task 3) Jim always has to get Jess’s approval afterwards instead of talking through to project, brainstorming ahead of time and knowing A) what you want it to look like and B) how you are going to get it done. 4) Working separate Jim tends to play with the dogs more, wasting time, and rambling on talking and laughing instead of getting a task done. Work study’s show two people working together they will complete in 8 hours (16 man hours) … What would take one person 24 hours, working alone. I understand Jess needs “creative time”…. So is there away to do both in the same week? SUGGESTIONS: 1) Work 4 consecutive days a week together on major projects and bring closure first to unfinished projects. 2) Finishing unfinished projects first will mean not having to go back and spend as much time on repairs. You’ll both feel better about A) finishing the project B) minimizing time lost to repairs on unfinished projects. 2). Spend 2 consecutive days on “creative projects” Preferably together to get the most done. 3) Take one day a week to rest. That might mean getting away from your property and enjoying driving to locally unseen areas, hiking, visiting neighbors, joining a local garden club… anything that will get you off your property and recharge your physical and emotional batteries. This has become a must for me and my wife. Unfortunately… it’s to easy to become work-a-holics, and become isolated from the world and grumpy. Expand your horizons one day a week. Spend time with your Creator in His creation… you’ll feel better for having spent that time… that way. This is only a suggestion. I believe, Working together 4-8 hours a day of concentrated work on projects together and at least one day of rest… will make you far more productive and get to your goals sooner …. Than working separately and 7 days a week.
I really love the garden area. My grandpa was a gardener and produced such beautiful plants through his years. You have so many great ideas Jess. :) I love it!
Vegetable gardens and butterflies don't mix, their larva will eat everything you grow. Just FYI. Vegetable garden, or butterfly garden, but not together.
Your plants are looking great Jessica no doubt the compost helps a lot, love the bird bath you will be amazed at the variety of birds that will visit. I love watching them flapping and spraying water every where, what was that sweet little bird. Great set of stairs Jim. The weather in your parts creates this beautiful moody and bright sky which is lovely. Thank you great video as usual
lolllll bravo for slowing things down. Your going in the part that will nice but also challenging food crop production. Nice Jess keep it up girl and Budy those stairs are golden very nice recover from storm. Can't wait to see final out side lay out of your new root cellar and dome plus stairs. Go have fun how I wish I could do the same.
This is my first year composting. I started with chipping up some branches. Then a saw mill offered me a truck load of saw dust for ten bucks. He trouble I see with that is, it was green lumber they saw. So it will take longer to decompose. I bought some organic lime. Three dollars for a 40 pound bag. So now I’m adding that aswell. Your right. That’s the best soil you will find in the dessert. Later
"As self reliant as possible". finally someone used the correct wording! "Self reliant" means you try to do it yourself but can realize when to get help!
Root celler coming along nicely, have you thought about do the wall next to steps with the same mixture you applied on the steps ? To me it looks like it would hold up .
Hi buddy how you doing a little late today hope you guys are having a great day keep up the good work I'm proud of you guys one-step-at-a-time I don't want nobody getting hurt
FYI , if you save a bunch of urine and pour it on the compost after you let it sit for awhile , that will add ammonium nitrate to your compost , there is other ways to make it in a barrel, takes about a year
Your projects are looking good! A mini-food forest has begun. 😀 Love seeing the pollinators. The stairs are really nice. Don't remember. Did you do a swale or grade to move water away from the dome and root cellar? 🤔 Hope so. Nice to see your homestead as you choose it to be.
Plus you need a pond, to attract animals and insects and to cool off 📴 Then you would live at an oasis! 😅 👍 You can waterproof a pond by keeping ducks or pigs in it...

I was wondering that, too. the grading and swales will help in the general area, but rain is going to fall on the steps, and run down into the root cellar area to join the water that will rain right into the cellar. Where will that drain to?
@@elizabethblane201 As long as the root cellar is open to the elements, they’ll have to use a submersible pump to remove the water from the bottom of the hole and direct it downhill/away from the cellar. I have a house in Tucson, and we battled the monsoonal torrents of rain. This past fall and winter, we had major landscaping of our property to include retention basins, swales, and a number of 1,000 gallon rainwater retention tanks that capture water from our roof.
make sure you have a meditation bench in the dome. Just make sure no crevices for spiders to hide in as you sit on it. The cobb and then soil cement is a good idea. A little less water in it so its more of a clay and you can then burnish the soil cement. Plant them around the outside. They are not bad think they would make a nice spicy jelly if you added some jalapeno.
I really like your new format, also the vibe Jess looks like she's feeling better. Thanx for sharin the monsoon I luv storms, except the fact that sometimes people get hurt and/or lose important things. We get thunderstorms and maybe 20 some inches of rain a year. Hugs from Eastern Washington State way up in the N/E corner, 30 minutes from the Canadian Border

Howdy Jess and Jim. I think you guys are doing an amazing job. The stairs look great, Jim. You accomplished a major step. No pun intended. Haha. Preserving what you have. The finish work comes later. Bee baths will help with pollination bird bath style would b awesome you place rocks in there so bees can drink. Without drowning
Love life, love land living, love those ugly steps and I love talking about LOVE. Has anyone said I love you today?
I love how you both are working your land with mother Earth.
You guys have a lot more patience, time & energy than I do...
Having to keep reapplying cob due to rain erosion would drive me crazy! 🤪
Wondered about that
I just love your dedication Jess and Jim, Congratulations on the progress so far, keep up the good work, great video by the way! Colleen X

I think the steps are gonna keep washing away... i would grade so water runs away from the root cellar then pour solid concrete steps

You are Awesome 😎💯. Lots of love and hugs to you both 🎉🎉
Some Palm 🌴 trees would be cool 😎 👍 Do they grow/survive there?
To harvest dates and coconuts 🥥 and provide shade for the house and other plants...
