I've been invested in VDY since 2022. My focus in my TFSA is growth dividend and VDY fits that target . Its a stable, long term good paying dividend and while the growth side isn't as explosive as individual equities or the S&P index that does not make it a bad investment. I understand Dan's thoughts that there is a saturation within the Canadian banks and energy. But he understands what the TSX is made of primarily. There are no Tech stocks, possibly because they don't pay high enough dividends to be considered. I agree that more industrials or rail roads could be included. REITS don't pay dividends either. Its a distribution so that may be why there are no REITS . Overall my TFSA is achieving solid total returns and I am dripping into my allocations increasing my dividends. I utilize my RRSP and taxable account for US and global investments. Comparing VDY to SCHD isn't a good comparison in my opinion as they are vastly different markets. I hold SCHD in my RRSP for tax reasons.

Great video Dan, in this space I own XEI for a few reasons.
25% of VDY is Royal and TD banks. I own these banks directly including ENB, CNQ along with other top holdings of VDY that make up 70% of the etf.
XEI holds more stocks than VDY and any single holding has no more than 5% weight, unlike VDY.

When I first started investing I almost bought a bank ETF and VDY but then looked at the appreciation of them compared to what growing businesses (like RY ) were doing at the time and decided buying individual stocks outright was probably going to be more lucrative. When I look at VDY now, I feel like it is able to give a higher distribution payout than other ETFs by having higher dividend paying flatliners in it, that I would rather not own. My ETF purchases are bonds and international stuff. I own one CDN ETF (besides my bond one) that contains fast growing companies that would have me overextended in Canadian markets if I bought them all outright: NSCE. It is a newer ETF but it's done quite well since so far.

If you've been wanting to invest in a fund like VDY, and with interest rates expected to start decreasing soon, then now might be a good time to start/add to a position?

In Canadian, live in Edmonton, which one would be the right choice?

Nice to see you on youtube again. You're really good at putting things into perspective. Living off my small investments, I'm at a point that I need income more than growth. While my RSP is filled with a blend of US dividend stocks/ETFs and TFSA with US growth, I struggle to find good Canadian ETFs that pay nice eligible dividends for the non registered. I pretty much end up with individual Canadian stocks plus few covered calls as there aren't that many interesting companies up here anyway. Regardless, I find that having a Canadian exposure is important, VDY isn't the best way to get it for me. Would like to hear your thoughts on ZLB .

Great video as always. Why invest in Canada? When the Canadian market is only about 3% of the global market, poorly diversified (mainly in three sectors), with a proven track record of under-performing the US market. Great ETF if you want your investments to drag.

But if you put US dividend payers in your TFSA, you lose the withholding tax (15%), so that's why some of us have Cdn dividend ETFs like VDY and XEI in TFSA.
