    Commenting this before the commentary but I hope you notice fact we have heard the Dalek's say mercy before. River shoots a Dalek begging for mercy. This answers the question of how come the greatest killing machines in the universe, fueled only by hate are also capable of showing other emotions at times. I love the idea of the Doc implanting in Davros and therefore the Dalek's a weakness that we see eating away at them throughout all of new WHO. Its fun to go back and rewatch the show with the idea that this moment always happened and gives an interesting reason why 9 thinks that the Dalek's removed all their emotions when we know thats not fully true.

    Dammit, I love the cast. They all have such great chemistry with each other. And Capaldi is such a fantastic Doctor. I'm not sure if you know already, but he has always been a fan of the show, so it's sweet to imagine him go from being a tiny fanboy to actually playing the Doctor. I know he's not the only fan-turned-cast but it's just something especially endearing about Capaldi himself.
    And nobody does speeches quite like 12. Maybe not all of them are lengthy ones, but 12 has a way with words, and Capaldi's delivery is always perfection. Some iconic speeches (and guitar playing) are yet to come :') 🕶️🎸

    I absolutely adore the Davros/12 dynamic. They're two old, tired people who just want to go home and rest. Their handling of how to do that differs entirely, diametrically in fact. It's incredible. I want Davros to come back as often as he can if the scripts are half this good lol

  • @taesto3204
    @taesto3204 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    For sure, as much as Davros and Doctor were both playing each other, they certainly were honest about many of the things they said too. Best way to tell a lie is to mix in some truth, after all.

    • @phantomsidious2934
      @phantomsidious2934 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well davros isn't really lying I don't think. He always loves using the truth to manipulate his enemies and prove a point that he's right and stage a situation to his advantage. He's done it since the 70s. A master manipulator

  • @Jim_The_Fish
    @Jim_The_Fish ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Despite trying to manipulate the Doctor, I like to think that Davros really was being genuine with him, and that’s the reason he was so convincing. He was telling the truth. He’s still an evil bastard, and he may hate the Doctor, but he still has absolute respect for him. This was a talk only centuries long nemesis’s could have.

    • @Eclipsed_Embers
      @Eclipsed_Embers ปีที่แล้ว +2

      even in terms of hate it's questionable. in a few audio stories and books Davros has outright stated that the Doctor is the closest thing he has to a friend.
      it's a bit more one-sided but that leaves them in a fairly similar spot to the Doctor and the Master, relationships where "friend" and "enemy" turn out not to be mutually exclusive.
      rather than saying that Davros hates the Doctor it's probably more fitting to say that Davros's love for the Daleks trumps all else, and if there's one thing the Doctor utterly despises it's Daleks, so that will always place a rift between them.

  • @SnarlyCurmudgeon
    @SnarlyCurmudgeon ปีที่แล้ว +9

    ‘I’m going to save my friend’ -- another instance of Moffat’s love of double meaning; his ‘friend’ could be Clara or Davros. He did say in the Series 9 prequel minisode that an ‘enemy’s just a friend you don’t know yet’, and this episode shows pretty well that no one understands Davros better than the Doctor.

    • @Eclipsed_Embers
      @Eclipsed_Embers ปีที่แล้ว

      even beyond that, while the Doctor has often outright refused to even consider the same thing in return there are audio stories and books where Davros outright states that he sees the Doctor as a friend, or at the very least as the closest he has to one. at absolute minimum he genuinely respects the Doctor as a fellow scientist.
      but ultimately, at the end of the day Davros's love for his creations and belief that making the Daleks was genuinely the right thing to do will always place him as one of the Doctor's enemies (though as the Master clearly demonstrates, friend and enemy are not mutually exclusive positions when it comes to the Doctor), and he'll never be willing to bring himself change them into something the Doctor might tolerate.

    I am still incredibly amazed at how deeply you understand each episode and every important detail in it. Usually, in the comments to the reaction, I want to tell the author of the video about such things, and you see them all for yourself! I can only say thank you for the video! I'm really looking forward to your reaction to this season's finale, the interaction of the 12th Doctor and Clara is incredibly revealed here.

    Some people really don't like this two parter and I just don't see how. This is along the likes of Impossible Astronaut for my favourite series opener, both because of the extra time a two parter allows but also just the fact they have really engaging stories with high stakes for our characters

    • @phantomsidious2934
      @phantomsidious2934 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Because the Missy and Clara stuff is cringe, the daleks are wasted and moffat changing the daleks in terms of the tank being the evil thing and not the creature goes against well established doctor who canon is why most hate it, and I sort of agree. But the davros and doctor scenes are great though

    • @lucasdolding6924
      @lucasdolding6924 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@phantomsidious2934 Missy and Clara are not cringe, it's not a Dalek story so why have the focus on them; it's a Doctor and Davros story, it'd be like complaining there aren't any Daleks in Davros. Moffat didn't change anything about the Daleks you just don't understand the Daleks and that any emotion they have is hate so when Clara expresses emotion all that can be translated through the shell is to kill; they're genetically engineered to be killing machines so anyone who thinks they're misunderstood is just being stupid.

      @@phantomsidious2934 Missy and Clara were great, allows us to explore them without the Doctor being in the group. The Daleks themselves weren't the focal point for the story, it's a Davros story primarily, the Daleks are just there because he will always have them with him as they are his creations. Also I imagine the creatures themselves are still hateful, it's just the shell doesn't allow anything else to come through other than hate, in the event that someone actually is stupid enough to steal a Dalek casing, they can't communicate to their allies they aren't a Dalek and get killed in the casing, since only the Doctor knows how they really work. It's not established that the rest of the universe knows of the Daleks telepathic interfaces for their shells.

    • @tortoiseoflegends4466

      I really like it but some stuff in the second episode is a bit meh. The whole conflict with Clara being inside a Dalek is pretty bad. It doesn't really come to anything, neither does Missy having a "very clever idea." Plus the whole thing about a Dalek saying mercy... We've seen a pure Dalek say mercy. One begged River Song for mercy in the series 5 finale.
      I also think the Doctor knowing the whole time that Davros was bullshitting him undermined a bit of the episode. I think it would've been more powerful if he suspected it, but took the compassionate route and tried to assume the best (while also knowing that if Davros stole the regeneration energy he'd shoot himself in the wheel.)

  • @loislane7482
    @loislane7482 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    21:10 I love that scene. I tend to prefer the quiet moments of the Doctor expressing his philosophy over the big speeches. This gives me the same energy as Ten telling Wilf 'I think you look like giants' in End of Time, which was such a contrast to some of his bigger speeches about humanity.

    If there’s one thing I’d criticise this episode for, it’s how passive Clara is as Missy’s companion. That she follows Missy like the puppy on a leash may be the point (callback to the last episode), but by now she’s been established as very nearly the Doctor’s equal, so it’s odd to see falling into Missy’s traps again and again. The only reasonable explanation I can imagine for Clara being so off her game is sapphic awe ... and, you know, that’s totally fair.

    Although I like the idea that "Exterminate" charges a Dalek's weapon-explaining why they say it so often-the idea that they shouldn't be able to _say_ the word "mercy" is completely absurd. Humans can say "infrared"; our eyes can't physically see those frequencies, but we still understand that it exists and can make a word to describe it. So even if Daleks never _feel_ mercy, that doesn't have to limit their language. (There was also a major scene in 5x13 with Dalek begging for mercy, but admittedly the Doctor didn't hear that exchange.)

    A bit strange that the Daleks, bred for pure hatred, needs a language filter in their armour to prevent them from saying nice things, isn't it? It removes some agency from them in my mind, what is even the point of having a Dalek inside if the armor decides when to shoot and what to say?

    • @phantomsidious2934
      @phantomsidious2934 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well that's the biggest failure of this episode. Its more than well established that the creature is the evil thing and the tank is just how it gets around to kill everyone. Moffat has admitted he dislikes writing dalek stories and you can see why, he doesn't understand them fully.

    • @chazo1367

      @@phantomsidious2934 Works when someone steals it, sorta like a failsafe. People don't know how the Daleks work exactly so they wouldn't be able to communicate to allies they have stole a casing and are using it against the Daleks, so they are likely to die to their own side if caught unaware. It's also how Davros would operate, the casing has upgraded but it's still the same thing he made, maybe because the original Daleks weren't just monsters the casing was designed with that in mind to keep them hate filled and it just sorta evolved as part of them over time through genetics but he kept the original features anyway. Davros is an insane paranoid genius who probably didn't want things left to chance anyway.

      @@phantomsidious2934 Has to, due to contractual obligations the Daleks have to appear in some capacity in each season, it's how we got them for the New Series originally, the BBC doesn't actually own the rights to the Daleks, that belongs with the creator Terry Nation, which is run through his estate after his passing. They had to convince them to allow the Daleks to return and that's the deal that was struck. The Toclofane from series 3 were the original enemy that the Timelords fought in RTD's initial writeup because the talks were going sourly enough they didn't think the estate would agree to it.
      Anyway they did but the Daleks have to be used in Doctor Who once a year during the series, even cameos are enough because the Estate made that the deal. So even if they aren't the main focus, they are to appear even in background shots or references to them like casing parts. You likely won't find this information on the internet anymore either, this was nearly 20 years ago, the internet wasn't like it is now, this is stuff from old newspapers and interviews where the footage was lost or destroyed for some reason or no longer released to the public as it isn't deemed important to know nowadays, was a weird time. It's just stuff to remember from back then with a wistfulness.
