Love this. I'm just beyond waiting for my trip to read it :) Whenever I hear people talking about this book, it reminds me of the Book Thief. I am realizing that I like books that are set around WWII. Historical fiction is so good in wintertime.

I need to read The Book Thief. It's been on my wishlist forever. And I've heard fans of that will enjoy this, and vice versa. Yes, historical fiction is perfect for winter!

I read people of the whale for an art of fiction class and its a historical fiction on the vietnam war and it also incorporates tribes from a reservation. My favorite part of the book is how it submerges the reader into the perspective of the soldier to the point where you feel like you have ptsd(post traumatic stress disorder) with them. I wrote a paper on that where I read journals from soldiers who had experienced ptsd and I found that the experiences I read with the journals are spot on with the same experience character in the novel in which they experience that loss of innocence or feel betrayed by their government/nation and are having a hard time reconforming into society when they get back. Another aspect I liked was the contrast between American culture and Native American culture which is an issue within itself. But again I won't say anymore. Just read it. It's called "people of the whale" by Linda Hogan

Wonderful review as usual Sam! I was looking forward to this one!
I'm the same with history and historical fiction, it's always been something I was really interested in. I read The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank when I was 10 and after that I became really interested in finding out more about WWII and WWI, and like you said, historical fiction gives us a fantastic new perspective.
I was already planning on reading this book but now I want to get it even more!
You say you love reading historical fiction during the winter, it's quite the opposite for me! I enjoy reading it during the summer! I read The Book Thief this past summer and absolutely loved it. I know it's an obvious choice but if you haven't read it yet please pick it up!

Thoughts on Tomes You'll really like it. It was one of the book recommendations in a Goodread group I belong to. The relationship that really drew me was between the girl (forgetting her name) and the Jewish fellow her family hid.

Yeah probably! It sure could be interesting to learn more on how people at that time lived, and dealed with what happened around them.

I do live in a city where a lot of fights took place, and there are a lot of monuments and mass graves of fallen soldiers, my grandparents were so called children of war, and when they told me their stories it was so scary. And so I never want to read books about WW2 and I hate movies about it, just because it still feels so real and awful. But in booktube community WW2 fiction is quite popular and its so strange to me. Like, I dont mean it in a bad way - you can enjoy whatever you want, I just dont get it.

I havent read this one yet, but it is on my TBR. I just finished The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult. As European who used to listen to her grandparents stories about WWII, I am always a bit afraid of how American authors will describe this part of our history. And Picoult did a really good job. There were small places where I knew, it was written by American, by overall, it was beautifully written story and I highly recommend it. Btw, I really like to watch your videos, especially book reviews :)

If this was a movie i would most likely be a R rated, but thats only because the near end with the Germans sister. that part is really sad. whats even worse is that the Russians really did those atrocities. Not trying to spoil anything for any other readers, but the near ending is just screwed.
