    The "Plain Awkward #relatable" girl who has no luck with guys but mysteriously manages to have the best looking guy in the world ever pining after her. UGHHHHHHHH. I hate it when every male character a female protagonist meets falls in love with her. Bella is one. It happens in series I love as well. I'm sorry but Cleo from Falling Kingdoms fits this trope too! Does taste never factor in to someone's attractiveness? I remember in If I Stay Mia is mooning after Adam and her best friend says "he's not my type" and I was like THANK YOU!

    • @ThoughtsOnTomes
      @ThoughtsOnTomes  9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +MusicBooksTV Omg that totally does happen with Cleo but I love it because she is queen. But you are totally right. It also happens with Celaena in ToG. Every freaking time a male character pops up, he's in love with her. So annoying.

    I hate how girl antagonists are portrayed in stories (LOOKING AT YOU WATTPAD ROMANCE WRITERS). Apparently the only way to make it painfully clear who the villain is is to make them slutty, wear revealing clothes, wear make up, be skinny and tall, and have blonde hair and have them needlessly bully the girl for no reason. Also, the 'I bully you but we used to be friends' thing. Maybe that really does happen, but I see it ALL the time on wattpad stories and it gets old. Ok this turned into a rant but WATTPAD is full of tropes that I hate so I could go on forever about this.

    • @MariaRevArt

      Oh Wattpad. Was such a good idea and while there are a few gems among the rubble, it really has gotten out of hand. And now I'm seeing those kind of stories being published as YA and NA. Might have to stick to older publications to get some good reads.

    I personally don't enjoy the 'Manic Pixie Dream Girl/Boy' trope. The one where the protagonist is all sad and/or boring but their life is turned upside down by a free-spirited, amazing, supercool character who teaches them how to *live* (like Augustus from The Fault In Our Stars)

  • @LibraryFairy762

    I think my most hated trope is probably something I'm going to call the "mandatory love interest." This is when it feels like a character's only contribution to a story is to be a romantic interest. It's a trope you can see in a lot of different genres, all across the gender board. This pops up for me a lot of with love triangles, because a lot of the time, I feel like at least one of the legs' only purpose is to cause romantic tension. They have no other contribution to the story and I hate hate hate it.

    I have such a disliking towards the girls who bash other girls to make themselves "unique" trope. Like they will actively avoid anything feminine for the ultimately terrifying horror of being labeled as a "normal girl". And the girls who are so annoyingly dependent! I get it if you've never fought a day in your life and suddenly you're thrust into a world where there are dangers everywhere, so you let someone save you, but wouldn't it be smart to learn how to fight after that? You can't just constantly rely on everyone around you! And also the bad boy trope where they're mean to the love interest at first but it was only to distance themselves so they don't fall in love, but then they do anyway and are a completely different person around the love interest. That doesn't happen buddy. Most times if a guy is a douche to you that's his personality and as far as his respect for you will go. In which case you should let that mango. Plus, it gives everyone who reads it an unfair perception that you can change and fix someone to your liking. I have so many more I could talk about but let's stop here.

    One trope I hate is the "any eye color that's not brown" trope, its a little thing but come on give brown eyed people some love too!
    A second trope I hate is the unnecessary rivalry between girls. You know the whole "____ is a total b**** for no reason and I am her poor unfortunate target" and that just goes until someone tells ___ off, a lot of the time it's the Hunky Male Love, and its over. Not really the best message to send to a younger reading audience that girls will be b****es for no reason and the only way for it to be handled is if a hunky prince tells her off for you!

Bigger then your britches (Girl decides she can't wait for help and goes off to do (thing) by herself without telling anyone and gets in a bad situation....kidnapped, lost, trapped, etc.) 3. In general bad boys get on my nerves, but it's even more annoying when the main character swears off all chances for relationships and then suddenly "can't get the irresistible hunky bad boy out of her head". Oh my God, that Beautiful Disaster book was genuinely terrifying. That dude was so abusive that I actually got angry. I wasn't annoyed, it made me furious. And it's so scary to me that a woman wrote it and sold it to young girls. Like, what is in this woman's head for her to think that writing that was okay? She genuinely, I say this WITHOUT snark...must have some issues she needs to work out with a doctor. She should go do that instead of writing things that set back her own gender and put poisonous, warped ideas in young girls minds.

    • @ResemeeC
      @ResemeeC 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Maialeen I think it's also clear when an author has never been a victim of abuse and they write about it. If they had been, they wouldn't be writing about it or they'd at least turn the story around and show the reader how disgusting and vile abuse it. It makes me feel sick that authors romanticise abuse and yet they've never experienced the trauma of it. I wouldn't wish domestic abuse on my worst enemy but they clearly need to get their heads out of their arses, do some research and at least try to empathise with a victim of some form of abuse.

    while I have a lot (and I do mean a LOT) of most hated tropes, I will have to pick Draco In Leather Pants as my most hated trope. Draco In Leather Pants is a trope where basically you have these two love interests that have really opposing personalities and morals and values and then one or both of their personalities are just fucking gone because of "love". this is mostly done in fan fiction (hence the name) but it does happen in a few books.

    I love that you dislike the "bad (abusive) boy" as much as I do. It's fine to have a character in an unhealthy relationship as long as it's not glorified! And hopefully she gets out of that relationship safely, because it can be done. Writers just need to think of what message they want to send to young girls. Another one I hate that seems to be prevalent is when a character somehow always has this natural ability to be good at everything and they're super successful and get amazing grades and save the world. What ever happened to working for your successes? I like those characters.

(So that makes you cool? because other girls are so icky and girly and stupid?). Some of my hated tropes are insta-love, love triangles (when done poorly, otherwise I like them), the "damsel in distress" kind of thing where the female of the book has to rely on a "savior" to get through anything (bleh), the "everyone's attractive as all hell" thing. I don't even know if that's a trope, but it's soooo common in YA. Like, "wow, he's so hot, with cerulean eyes and long, dark chocolate hair, and blahblah." ...yeah.

    As someone who's gay, I'm kinda tired of the "tragic gay" storylines. Most prevalent right now in media is The 100. I never get around to really watching, unlike some of my friends, and I'm glad I didn't because I would've been in a world of anger.
    Another trope I see a lot that I hate is the "love subplot takes over the actual plot". Or at least when every other thought that the character has is about the love interest(s).

      +Thief of Pies Ugh I hear you on the 100. I'm still catching up with the series but I'm SO MAD about it. What burns me up is the writers admitted they knew about the "kill your gays" trope and still decided to write that in, saying they thought they could do it justice. In what world could they possibly think they could "do it justice?" That's not something that you "do justice"!!! Ok... whew.. rant over.

    I agree with all of those 100%! One of my other most hated tropes is A Character Thinking They're Invincible. I hate that in some series the main character (cough cough Tris in Insurgent & Allegiant) totally ignore that they're not alone, and think they have to be the one to save everyone from everything, only to be put in a worse situation. I totally made that trope up, I think, but it's the one that I absolutely can't stand.

    Yes! I agree with everything mentioned here :) I hate fake strong female heroines. Readers turn a blind eye to how crappy the main character actually is just because she is described as being skilled in combat or the world's best assassin etc. When in reality this type of character has a very weak personality, she can't even perceive when she is in danger, she is just some spoiled whiny teenage girl who ends up being saved by others. Just because a female character can beat people up, or she possesses masculine qualities doesn't mean she is a strong female character. Having integrity, resilience, a strong desire to protect, a strong desire to survive, if a fierce sense of compassionate, intelligence, being observant and perceptive etc. these are some of the traits of a strong female heroine, in my opinion. The worst part of this trope is that people think the fake strong female heroine is a positive role model for girls when she isn't any better than the weak female characters they hated in the first place.

    I hate it when the characters who are in love get separated or cannot be together for a short amount of time due to circumstances but they promise to get back to each other and be together soon. However, one of the character falls for someone else while the other one is gone and suddenly there's this love triangle!

    I hate the trope when girls are "though" after discovering her powers and is the chosen one. Like before they are living a normal life until something happens and they are ok with the situation, I mean I would be scared. I don't know, and that happens a lot in dystopian YA novels.

    I hate tropes when a character tells the heroine to 'stay put' and she never does, which is annoying because 1st it's stupid, 2nd, it puts EVERYTHING at risk. Also really hates the supposed 'bravery' actions that are just. plain. stupid. And REALLY annoying.

  • @sakurahan91

    I don't like love triangles - although I've just read Nightshade by Andrea Cremer which sort of has one - I gave that book 5 stars. I can't stand them normally though :(.
    As for "insta-love" I actually really like it. You often get to see the characters fall in love and so get to know each other over a few chapters. For me this works as the story can keep progressing from there. Whereas if the couple don't get together for a whole book that seems like the waste of a book to me. Then you've only got 2 books (if it's a trilogy) to see the relationship develop. I also like them getting to know each other in insta-love books.
    The new moon phase is very annoying though. I totally agree with you there!

    I hate that with a burning passion, and it is what made me not like The Grisha as much as I probably would have, had it not been for Mal and his stupid supid behaviour. Another book this happened in was.. eh.. Harry Potter. Twice, if you think about it. Yep. Hated that, too. I only liked it in an epic fantasy series I've read a while ago, and that was beause it was very well dealth (dealed?) with, and it wasn't in any way a love triangle, nor was it insta-lovey, it was just really great (that series is by Licia Troisi, btw, but I don't think you guys actually have the entire trilogy translated in English yet, as it was originally writen in italian)
    Insta love is also a really bad turn off for me, so there's that...

      +casey s I'm okay with best friends falling in love when it isn't part of a love triangle. Then it is really cute. But when it's a love triangle, the best friend is always the guy that never know what he had until it's gone and it makes me hate him.

  • @claris3056
    @claris3056 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yup, agreed on all. I also hate a slight variation of the description of the Best Friend In A Love Triangle trope, which is when the friend has loved them all along, but never told them until they're with someone, and then goes all angsty or hurt or broody or "why didn't you pick me?!" over it. Well, maybe you should have MENTIONED IT BEFORE NOW. Also, I suppose it's more of a plot device really, but in fantasy I hate the Important Magical Object trope. It's usually a stone, or a ring, or a crown, or a sword, with magical powers of some world-changing significance. I'm just sick of it really.

    Completely agree about the best friend situation, especially in a triangle. It just makes me read the object of affection as being a bit pathetic, not having enough balls to say "Do you know what, no, you didn't realise until someone else wanted me. Too late". Then I begin to dislike them and I've already switched off.

    Needless to say, I also really disline all the mentioned tropes. Especially the miscommunication and the love tirangle with the best friend. I don't like love triangles at all because few are well done in my opinion, but it's WAY worse if best friends are involved. "Oh, I didn't even notice how perfect you are until you found someone else. Now I have to have you!" What bullshit. It reminds me of my nephew when he's with someone and they want to play with some toy. He wants to take it away from them, not because he wants to play with it but because he doesn't want others to play with it.

      +Thoughts on Tomes I don't read much romance at all. I started Twilight only because I've heard such mixed opinions on it. As you maybe can tell I'm into Mystery/Crime stories. I also like action/fantasy and I think one terrible trope is the prophecy/chosen one.
      Weird thing about prophecies is that all of them all self fulfilling if you think about it. I also hate the villains turning good trope on most occasions. I feel villains are often the most passionate and spirited of the characters. When the become good at the end, they tend to lose most of their spirit and just mop and dope, feeling sorry that they did all the bad things they did. HATE. However, I'm ok with it when they end up happier as a result or keep aspects of their old personalities.

    my main thing is that im fine with most insta loves, just as long as they have been in a situation where they got to know each other at least a little bit. but if it boils down to the love interest or saving the world, the choice should always be the saving the world. I hate the overlooked best friend trope too. It certainly doesn’t help that it so often falls into the men and women can’t be friend’s pitfall that really annoys me.
    one you didn’t mention is the evil romantic rival where they give the love interest a horrible current boy/girlfriend, fiancée etc. it’s like the writer is saying, well I can’t give you any good reason these two should break up so let’s just make the rival a jerk.

  • @silverkyre

    The best friend thing to me as well! Ugh, I hate it most times and don't usually or ever root for the best friend. What I dislike most about those is the best friend is usually like mad that the girl might be into someone else, like she had to be into him even if he hasn't done anything to move them along. And he has had YEARS!
    The only one where I can like the beat friend was Gale, because I think it was, at least to me very obvious that he loved and wanted Katniss since the begging he even tries to confess it right before they take her to The Hunger games but he gets pulled out of the room before he can say it. But the reason I forgive him most of all is because I feel like the reason he didn't go after Katniss before is because she wouldn't like it, she wasn't ready for something like that and he knew and he was waiting for her. Later on after everything with Peeta it seemed easier that she might actually responded to his advances. Either way he is practically the only one I like I really mostly dislike every other childhood best friend.

My sister will stop reading series when that happens because it just ruins it. I don't know if this is an actual trope, but I don't like the stalker types. It's usually the male lead. How in any way is it romantic for someone to be following you around watching you without your knowledge? I feel like Twilight romanticized it, and everyone else just plays off of it. We always laughed in the movies when Edward was being a creeper. Totally not cool or realistic.
