I like Andrew because he is such a down to earth guy, and HONEST about the fact that he is just as likely to muck something up as he is to get it right most of the time.
As far as analog vs. digital goes, i prefer digital, but nothing compares to physical knob twiddling and the ability to turn multiple knobs at the same time. I worked in FL studio for over a year until I got the MPC X. Now I almost use that exclusively because I love turning knobs and pushing buttons. Lol Using a mouse is so uninspiring for me. That's just my personal preference. I'm still learning so I'm not even completely sure what everything does yet. I'm just kind of learning what I need to k ow for now to do what I want to do and I'll just get into some more advanced stuff as time goes on. I just got my MPC X a couple months ago so I guess I can't be expected to know everything. Especially only about two year after getting into making music. I mostly just produce instrumentals but I want to learn a little of everything and hopefully help some local people make some music that don't have access to equipment or have the knowledge to do recordings. People that can focus just on writing and performing vocals, possibly some marketing while I do everything else. Hopefully one day I can just get a group of locals together and we can all just make music that the town will enjoy. I don't really want to get rich. I just want to survive and live a somewhat comfy life. Lol To all those out there on a similar journey, I wish you all the success you hope and dream for! Music is the language of humans that we all recognize whether we speak the same spoken word language or not.
Oh and just to be clear I know the MPC X and it's plugins are not analog. I was drawing a comparison because of all the knobs and whatnot. Basically it's digital with a sort of analog feel because of all the knobs and whatnot. But I do also have a small mixer that is both analog and digital. I also have a hybrid analog/digital synth. Also got the MAudio BX8 studio monitors and the audio Technica at4050 mic and a new desktop computer that's a beast compared to my old laptop and a Lumix g85 camera. This all may not seem like much to many people who've been doing this stuff for years. But for someone like me who was using nothing but FL studio for 1 1/2 years and an old outdated cheap laptop with ear buds, it's huge. I'm also an ex drug addict who was hooked on opiates for 15 years. Been clean about 8 years now and you wouldn't believe the looks I get when people see me who haven't seen me for years. Nobody seen this side of me coming. Anyway, this was a fantastic video. This guy is very good at explaining things in a way that's easy to understand. Probably one of my favorite engineers to listen to. Any suggestions for other good engineers like him???
Who fires Andrew Scheps??? ... "hey our stuff sounds too good.. Sorry we are going to have let you go"...? Seriously But it is humbling for him to admit. He is truly amazing, Love his so music is first attitude .
Getting fired (or not hired) by bands is really, really easy: #1 they want 50 hours of skilled specialist work for $15 delivered overnight, #2 they don't want to deliver good performances but still expect a great record, #3 they think you are their sock puppet instead of a creative individual (micromanaging), #4 they think you need to be their buddy instead of being there to get results, #5 they can't articulate what "good" is for them so there are no goals, #6 they have a buddy with lots of opinions (but no experience or skills), #7 they are afraid so it is easier to scupper the project than let it complete, #8 they didn't research the engineer, merely assumed they would do whatever they want (see sock puppet above). #9 they started fighting among themselves, #10 I'm sure Andrew has met other reasons too but they probably fit one of these fairly well. As for hiring Mr Scheps to mix one of my records, well I don't actually think I like any of the records he has mixed but I love his manner and attitude, so I'd definitely sit down and have a conversation with him to see if we seemed a good match. If he did mix my record I would be really worried that I was leaving him alone enough, not hovering. I'd be wanting to understand WHY he was doing things (not so much on the how as he says, that is all but irrelevant the moment you sit at another mix).
