Irad Ortiz Jr. Fined $1,000 For Punching Paco Lopez

- Three-time Eclipse Award-winning jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. was unhappy with fellow rider Paco Lopez after the fourth race at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 26, 2021. There was an incident at the top of the stretch between the two horses they were riding and Lopez lodged a claim of foul against Ortiz. The Equibase chart of the race said Known Agenda, Ortiz' mount, "had his hind end brushed" by Lopez' mount, Top Gun Tommy.
Stewards rejected the claim of foul and left Known Agenda, who was first across the wire by 11 lengths, the official winner.
Shortly thereafter, Ortiz threw several punches at Lopez, who was seated in a chair. The altercation was quickly broken up.
According to Daily Racing Form, stewards fined Ortiz $1,000 for punching Lopez and placed both riders on probation for the remainder of the meet.
Punched is the least Paco should’ve gotten.
Looking at the thumbnail, I thought Irad punched Abraham Lincoln for a moment. 😂

$1,000 (AUD$1300) I question the stewards integrity. Ortiz Jr should have been given at least a $5000 fine and a 1 month ban maybe 1.5/2 months ban at most. Walking up to a fellow jockey and throwing hand is not on, and should have been looked down upon much greater than it was, no matter whos fault it was.
People have been wanting to punch Paco Lopez for years... Especially the other jockeys he nearly killed via numerous incidents of reckless riding.
Irad is worse. He is the most reckless jockey I've ever seen. But Paco is a bit

I met Paco, cool guy, real gentleman. He gave me his phone number and said he was getting some good 2 year olds coming up. About a week later I bet one of his 2 year olds and he won for fun, I texted him and congratulated him, he texted me back and gave me a big thank you. Super cool guy, but a tenacious, gutsy rider.

There are fights everyday in the jocks room and no he doesn't make 1000 in a sec.. whatever the purse is he gets 6%.. which is 6k.. his agent gets 30% of that.. his valet gets 5% and uncle same gets close to 20%.. so for a 100k race he takes home 2700..

The owner pay the jockey 10%(used to be), the jockey pay his agent 10%( used to be) and I really don't know how much the owner pay his trainer. Uncle Sam don't get shit....he only get whatever all those people pay in income tax according to the money all those people report individually in their income tax as a salary annually. The trainer of the horse also pay the groom from whatever he gets. The trainer is the one that hire the groom to work for him.
Looked like Paco was coming out while Irad was coming in to save some ground. I kept wondering why that happened. Maybe Paco felt the outside ground might be firmer and get him some speed, and relieve his horse of being herded into the rail. Irad probably just explains it, "he screwed up, put me in danger, and deserves a punch in the face", lol.

@@charlesdellorusso3761 Lopez did not pull his horse OUT. Look at 1:22 and see the horse's head move to the left (toward the rail) as Ortiz passes so close in front of Paco that his horse had to take up and lose momentum. Ortiz should have been taken down and suspended for attacking Lopez.

If this happened the other way around Lopez is fined 10k and suspended. Lopez horse was absolutely finished and blew the turn. He definitely didn't warrant a DQ but I've seen worse claims of foul than that.

Four foot ten Julie Krone used to fight other jockeys, most notably Joe Bravo back in the late 80s. Intimidation is a big part of racing. Paco is not liked by many riders, even TVG commentators speak of his overly aggressive style. Aggressive is good, dirty is not. Ask the man to stand up before you take a swing tho.

Which brings him out as he regains his footing. Know Agenda is a nice horse. Wish him well in Kentucky. Especially after an impressive Florida Derby. But because of his rider he got away with one. Deal with it.

Did we all not watch the same race? 4 clearly cut in front of the inside horse. He was like 3 wide at the turn and then was suddenly at the rail. Whoever thinks he took a straight line needs their eyes checked

He nearly tripped the other horse on the turn, and there's no real way to know how much that horse had left before he stumbled. So, yeah I know he won by 11 lengths an all, but I've see people get DQ'd from first to last for much less as well.

Clearly Irad Ortiz's horse was in his hands, relax, he did not lose. Paco Lopez very scheming and tricky looking for the position to simulate a foul, you see a fake from Paco Lopez. That of course annoyed Irad Ortiz, it is not a reason to attack anyone, but it is clear that it is a malicious affair of Paco Lopez.
I don't see any foul by Ortiz Jr. But I do see a legal case of assault.
I love how there is three guys in the back just watching it. I know 1 of them tried but looked too old to get involved but when you have security in the back watching it all unfold Paco probably had it coming.

I saw it clear as day... thats the only way Paco would win that race.. he knew irad horse was the best of all so he went in front and when irad came ... before the bend finished he pulled even before the horses passed him.... Paco is very dirty indeed
The 1 was beat, Paco knew it but chose to swing out behind the 4 to make it look like he’d been cut off. The safe thing to do was to stay along the rail and ride it out. He was acting, like a soccer player flopping on the ground. Then he’s got the audacity to call foul!? Now, look, ya can’t go getting violent with people - but I do understand why Ortiz was upset. That’s some dodgy stuff to pull, and honestly everyone knows Paco has a history of sketchy maneuvers.
That's exactly how I saw it. I bet Irad got mad thinking of the damage a DQ could do to him knowing he could get suspended for it, and that can cost him a few racing days and a lot more wins.

I don’t speak Spanish unfortunately but I saw another video today that (without being able to completely understand) made me think part of this confrontation stemmed from a previous race. To be clear, I don’t know, nor have I read up about anything past basic TH-cam scrolling on the whole thing. My take was based only on the video from this race.
Whether the one was beat or not it was the 4 that moved over in front of him. That is an infraction. Lopez should have objected.

The one horse had already lost and the rider retaliated knowing it. He put IRAD IN DANGER WITH HIS STUNT AND GOT WHAT HE DESERVED.

Irad and Jose ride for each other and if one can’t get the win they will block other horses to help the other one win. Happens over and over and people continue to bet on races where both are riding. Not condoning Paco either he is also a dirty rider but again this business is full of crooks.

If you are a racehorse owner and desperate to win a race you need to hire the Ortiz brothers. They are known for doing everything for the horse they are riding to win a race including dirty tactics. It is known in the racing industry of their "tactics".

Any jockey has a right to claim a foul in any race. It's up to the Stewarts to makes a decision from there. You do not have a right to walk over and punch a guy in the face. $1000.00 is not enough when you tarnish a sport with a violent act.

A blind man on a trotting horse could see Paco's horse was beaten plus he was inside of Irad top of the lane and could have ridden out his mount along the rail down the stretch. That was a naughty peice of race riding by him and even naughtier to claim foul but Irad had no right putting his hand on Paco nevertheless. Irad is my guy but I does call a spade a spade he should get some days for his impetuous conduct to teach him some anger management.

Irad le da con la vara en la paleta y le jala la rienda izquierda por eso se le tira hacia adentro, la regla es de que si la falta no altera el orden de la llegada no se descalifica pero de que si se le tiro hacia adentro se le tiro. Pero si se vio muy mamon Irad Ortiz al pegarle mientras el otro estaba sentado. Eso es suficiente para castigarlo 1 mes no 1000 dls.

You can literally watch Lopez guide TGT to the right whenever KA begins to clear him. He was TRYING to create an impediment just so he could claim foul and have Ortiz/KA disqualified thus bumping him/TGT to first place. Lopez is known for his reckless riding (everyone who knows U.S. horse racing knows this) and although I don't agree with Irad throwing hands, I can understand why he was so furious. Furthermore, Irad's punches were hardly damaging. The guy is the size of a ten year old so please. 🙄

This maybe new to some but jockeys fighting in jocks room has happened for as long as I’ve been alive and My grandfather and dad used to tell me many stories about heated rivalries.
Paco looks like he was going to try to float Ortiz out wide and if that’s the case you can’t try that which happens everyday but then claiming foul after trying some riding tactics is a chump move would be interesting to know what was said if anything on the track during the race or is there a rivalry between paco and Irad already IMO there’s more to this

Not sure that Irad had safely cleared the path of Lopez's horse, looks pretty close to me.
Irad obviously had much more horse and he knew it, confirmed by the margin he won by.

Ortiz was in the wrong but he seems to have intentionally missed hitting Paco with his second punch.
There is no question the #4 made a dive to the rail and cut off #1 causing him to pull up. The rear camera view confirms it. #4 still would win but it definitely would have been much closer. The foul call was legit.
at no time should irad have hit paco since the foul was from ortiz to lopez case closed
