Sam and Rebecca were characters on "Cheers".
and Jason Sudekeis"s uncle was on Cheers
What's weird is that they were never officially a couple. Sam always wanted to get with Rebecca, but she never had any of it.
Now that's, a fun fact
@@coryrudy98 they did try to have a kid together, so the definition of "couple" is a bit murky
@@Weinzierl1973 that is true, but they stressed it was only as friends.
"Son of a bitch stole my move" was a callback to the end of Good Will Hunting where Robin Williams' psychiatrist character reads a letter from Will played by Matt Damon which ends with a phrase that itself was stolen from Williams earlier in the movie and he responds to himself saying, "Son of a bitch stole my line."
I must have watched this show several times through and watched half a dozen reactions to it and I still keep learning new things about it. Thanks for sharing!
I totally forgot about that. And I've seen this episode several times. Great catch!
A callback or a reference?
So, fun fact: the actor who plays Edwin Akufo, Sam Richardson, is who Sam Obisanya is both named for and mostly based on from a personality standpoint, since Sam Richardson has a reputation as just being a lovable, pleasant, super nice guy.
I initially had a difficult time reconciling his character in Ted Lasso with his character in Veep. He was brilliant in both.
He seems to have a knack for playing the odd man out. In Veep, he was the only character who was actually a decent person and remained so throughout.
In Ted Lasso, he was the only character who never had even a moment of redemption. Even the ultimate villain Rupert had some small redemption, granted with a big assist from Rebecca. Okufu had no such moment.

Sam and Rebecca - US tv comedy show "Cheers" from the 80s. Why Cheers? The actor who played Norm on the show (George Wendt) is Jason Sudeikis' real life uncle. Lots of low key Cheers references scattered in the series
You really have to give Nick Mohammed a lot of credit: after making Nate so appealing in season 1, he has now managed to turn that completely around. Really great acting job, even though you hate seeing what he has become.
Brilliant 🤩
The Trent Crimm. The Independant joke is so simple but so fricken golden.
Sam (Ted Danson) and Rebecca (Kirstie Allie) were from the US TV show "Cheers"
If you think about Nate's story until now, he started out being the kitman who was bullied by the players and basically got no respect from anyone until Ted showed up. He got love from his mother but no affirmation from his father. His first major break-through with the players was when he roasted the players in the locker room and motivated them to win against a club they hadn't beaten in decades. The players did not hate him for his comments, but instead showed him appreciation and respect. Ted gave him attention and praise and even got him promoted. His next lesson (from Rebecca) was to stand up for himself to get what he wants and he turned it into spitting on his own reflection to give himself confidence. When he was praised in the press, his own dad put him down for being proud. He twisted everything so now he thinks he has to put someone else down to make himself feel better.
Plus until he knew who Ted was he was yelling at him to get off the grass.
That's the last time Ted and Nate share screentime with just the two of them until the end of the series.
@@csongorszendrey2180 I'm trying to choose my words carefully so as not to spoil the show for them.
@@bereasonable8018 not exactly a spoiler, more of an observation about the character interactions.
One of the catalysts, very subtle, was when Nate volunteered himself to be the one to try to talk to McAdoo, they all laughed him off before Ted realized he was being serious.
Sam and Rebecca are from the sitcom Cheers. Jason Sudeikis' uncle George Wendt played Norm, who was one of the stars on it. It ran from '82 to '93. It was very popular both critically and ratings wise.
I gasped at the ending when I first saw it. I didn't think Nate would go that far.
We just finished our second rewatch of the series, just so brilliant... great reaction guys! Great fniale coming up!
Apologies if you got this and just didn't mention it in the edit, but when Nathan says "Kill some birds with a rock" it's another example of him messing up common expressions. He means "Kill two birds with one stone." I don't know if that's just an American expression or not.
That is a common saying, we got that thank you 🙏🏼
The irony of Edwin Akufo's choice of home for his African team, Casablanca (Morocco), is that it is closer to London than it is to Abuja or Lagos in Nigeria. It is also a city where the official languages are Arabic and Berber (it its dialects) and the next most common language is French. Casablanca already hosts two major Moroccan football clubs, Raja Casablanca and Wydad Casablanca.
That said, the reason I think it was chosen was the association with the 1942 classic film and we know how much this show loves to reference other media. I do wonder if there are any hidden quotes or references like there are with some other episodes/films.
As someone who has just binge watched your whole playlist of reacting to this you are in for a real treat and i enjoy watching this show again with you. Excited to see what you guys think about the next episode!
‘Great party game, terrible relationship status’ is one of my favourite Tedisms from the series.
"Cheers" is the name of the show with Sam and Rebecca. Very funny show .
Nate has been on a journey. He’s got someone in his ear now….Rupert. Remember Rebecca’s dad’s funeral. Rupert whispered something in his ear. Probably gave him the nudge to leak about Teds anxiety. Stinks
Miserable day, 88°F w/ 95°F heat index, then this popped up and the temp isn't bringing me down anymore. 1 season/series to go...I wonder what's next??? The Good Place???
Great suggestion!!
I won't give context, but I feel that 11:36 is a direct reference to Good Will Hunting. Amazing movie if you guys have never seen it.
So many pop culture shows/movie references throughout this series. They obviously had that Rom-Com episode with so many. You asked about Sam/Rebecca which many have answered below. I didn't read all of the comments, but I love the, "son of a b*tch, stole my line." which is a reference to Good Will Hunting. I'm sure there are plenty I don't get, but they have alot of little easter egg references that help make the show great. Especially on a re-watch when maybe you aren't as involved with the plot and recognize them more.
Sam and Rebecca couple- Cheers! Jason Sudekis’ uncle is Norm on that show.
Sam and Rebecca from the show Cheers! 😊
I love this series

Sorry about the Euro final, lads. This curse has to end someday!
Sam and Rebecca - from "Cheers"!!
Sam and Rebecca tv couple was from Cheers.
Cheers.
Nate was mean from the beginning.
Ooooof🤦♂️, Irish accent. I, kid independent, had 8 yrs of Irish nuns in school where I got into trouble frequently. So when I hear an Irish accent, it brings back the battle of "kid independent" vs. Irish nuns. Epic power battles.
CHEERS.
👍🏾
1st one 🥇
so nate's coldness has a lot to do with his dad. in S1 it seems like a joke at how cold his dad is, but in S2 you see his dad give him zero love for being in the paper. it doesn't make it right but it also doesn't come from nowhere.
sam/rebecca. cheers
