      I want to see someone do a video of Paul and Gene responding to each song on the album. I don't think they have a clue how special some of these songs are, because they're so blinded by their own remembered experiences.

    The Elder is a great album, it was way ahead of its time. It's disappointing that Gene and Paul never got it the props it deserves. They bash it every chance they get and it's unfortunate. They should stand by its brilliance and say, maybe it wasn't what the critics expected at the time, but we put a lot of hard work into it, and we're proud that people still have it in their collection.
    I listen to it and I think it's a brilliant album regardless of whether it was the right album for the time it was released.

    I love this album. It is the first one for Eric and he did a great job. But the responsability for its failure is only Gene and Paul's. They, along with Bob insisted on doing it. Ace wanted to go back to the origins of the Band, but he was out-voted.

    • @Lanisteelerocks
      @Lanisteelerocks 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      For some reason Bob Ezrin, Paul and Gene decided that Eric wasn't the right fit for all of the songs and brought in Allan Schwartzberg to play on Odyssey and I. I'm not a big KISS fan, though I understand their appeal and respect their success. I also like it when a rock band is inspired to do something out of their realm. Be it classical, or jazz, or experimental, the results may not be authentic, but they're often interesting. Upon listening to The Elder, I get the impression that they were going for something grandiose, but just didn't quite give it their all. And when you shoot for epically pompous and fall short, it's especially embarrassing. I know they'd never try something like that again, but I do wonder had they revamped some of that material and gave it another shot it might have a very different , and satisfying, result.

    I just rediscovered this album. Not sure why it was so disliked.

    Kiss Army is a hoax. I sent in the registration application for the Kiss Army from the Destroyer album, I believe when I was twelve years old. But I never heard from them again, and neither did my best friend. It was a hard blow for such loyal fans as we were, who even snuck away from home and risked our lives just to see them live at Gröna Lund in Stockholm, Sweden, back in 1976. I remember watching most of the concert with a great view, stuck in the crowd, and at no point did my feet touch the ground. The only painful part of the concert was the insane volume of the treble during Ace Frehley's solo.

    The Elder really fit KISS for me. At the time, I was 12 and I was big on Casey Kasem and the American Top 40. KISS was in the pop phase and so was I. Really brings back cool memories. I understand the criticism this gets and I respect it, but this album will always hold a special place in my heart.

    It's kind of funny how the Elder album has grown on and has come to be appreciated by many, many, many "old school" KISS fans over the years. Yet it has not grown on or become to be appreciated by the band (Paul, Gene, & Ace) that released it

    If it wasn't for "the Elder", KISS would never have changed course and followed it with "Creatures of the Night" or "Lick it Up."

    A World Without Heroes is probably the deepest song Kiss ever released. Incredibly underrated.

      Yeah, I agree it's one of the best lyrically (maybe due to Lou Reed?), and I love the melancholy guitar solo. I wish the song had another verse though - it's so short. Better than being too long at least.

    They base the fall on sales at the time. But the album was great

    If only the original 4 would reunite to remake THE ELDER. They don't even have to be in the same studio.
    Bob Rock would produce.

    I actually respect their perceptions on this piece. When I first heard the album I didn't know who or what I was hearing. Gene's comment in particular sums it up perfectly "honesty was missing ". I eventually came to appreciate the album choosing the right time and mood to listen to it, forgetting that its a Kiss record kind of helps.

    Elder and Dynasty are the 2 best albums KISS ever released. Love Gun and Destroyer would be tied for 3rd.
