While I agree with the “don’t rush” advice, probably the best deal I’ve gotten was a new listing I had to jump on because the price was too good, and on the contrary the best deals I missed, were listings that I didn’t act quick enough.
Great advice. Only thing I would challenge…don’t couch the issue of losing money when you sell. Except in very very rare cases, you’ll always lose money when selling. Watches depreciate faster than cars.
What a great posting, chock full of of insight informed by hard-won experience.! Thank you for doing this! I’ll be viewing it repeatedly in order to absorb and internalize it all. What you have done here is a selfless contribution to others: you are helping to create competitors in search of great watch bargains. So here’s a great big salute to you for going to the trouble of giving of yourself to make things better for your subscribers. Attaboy.
I love selling on eBay (getting ready for a new cleanse soon). It’s easy and safe, but the fees make it hard to recoup money. I will usually list as an open auction at a low price. Sometimes it gets bid up nicely, sometimes I’ve given some incredible discounts because it was a low attended auction (disappointing, but I’m always happy for the buyer & congratulate them)
Great video Chris. I've got a few brand new watches in outlets which offer at least 33% off retail. They are mainly recently discontinued lines. I got a Hamilton for 60% off.
Finally the best nost practicsl video about buying selling watches can also apply in essence to other products. Personally i dont use ebay becuase they are mass murdering custoner service. .
It's a good idea to take your time. At least it works for me. There have been dozens of times where I tripped over a certain watch, research, watch videos, etc. to only changing my mind and moving to something else. This happens to me all the time. If i bought some of those, I'd be holding on to watches i really didn't love. The ones that I took my time stay and get a ton of wrist time.
Excellent video. Personally I really like variety so I own a lot of lower to moderately priced watches rather than a few luxury watches. No one bothers to fake the models i buy 😋. But IMO i have a great collection nonetheless.
On my last watch purchase I asked the price of the watch I wanted from several sellers. Then I negociated telling them like "X seller offers that price at Y seller - Why should I buy from you ?" Then I got a killer price I've never seen on any platform for that watch, like 20% less as advertised, complete with box, papers and 4 years warranty.
Also Shopworn, the realreal etc. A video on some of the best sites to buy from would be very helpful 😎! I picked up that Eterna Royal Kontiki with bracelet and rubber strap-the bracelet is awesome (smooth as silk).
Not sure how it works in the US, but discount is never mentioned on new pieces, and people seem to have shamefully paid list. They say they would not pay over list, but happily pay more than they need to at list. They are either not skilled or just plain lazy.
They even use cloned movements now. Branded and everything. There are obvious tells though. But it’s still difficult to check nowadays from how good 1:1 fakes are getting
@HookersAndCoke At a certain point, wouldn't it be more profitable to just sell their own watches? If they're able to recreate Rolex movements seems like they could sell watches outright
@@17arando you would think. Typically organizations that do this are rooted in black market money. So it may be hard for them to go legit. Their clientele is also probably a large consumer of fakes, so it may be difficult to switch consumer base. The fakes could be a side hustle of a bigger company in China, where they get back doored and distributed elsewhere. There’s many reasons to speculate, but even with fakes so good, you’ll have hard time getting the piece serviced, are probably funding illegal activities buying one, and they also won’t have the same quality of materials used in general to authentic ones. Which is why I have trouble understanding people who do go to the lengths to acquire a super clone.
@@17arandono. Well made fakes are way more profitable. It is extremely expensive and time consuming to build a brand. When you think about a $10k Rolex vs a $1k fake that is virtually indistinguishable in design and build, you realize the majority of the rest of that cost is marketing and branding
You're not a true watch collector because you buy for the wrong reasons. It's those reasons that make it easy for you to sell and to wonder what you liked about them to buy them in the first place - "it's a bargain" should never be the first reason to buy a watch.
I’ve bought over $50,000 worth of watches and ended up selling them. You simply won’t bond with every watch you buy, and I’m not keeping a $30,000 watch that I don’t truly love.
Are you allergic to the notion of paying as little as you can for a watch? Buying and selling, including buying and selling by traders, is what makes a market and determines market prices. Those who can’t be bothered to study the market are contributing to the fortunes of those who can. It’s free enterprise. Congrats to those who can, and do.
13 JANUARY 2025. Eterna Royal Kontiki GMT black " like new " from Spain on Chrono24, asking price around US$ 3360 and you apparently bought one for US$ 600. IN WHICH UNIVERSE ? On a street corner ? Or maybe you are one of these unique incredibly lucky people ? Watches are my very serious hobby for over 4 decades and every day I do check various platforms which are dealing in watches. Prices are NEVER AS LOW AS YOURS. I wonder, WHY ?
Excellent vid. This is what financial literacy looks like!

I think it's definitely a balance between patience and recognizing a good deal!
Same thing has happened to me too many times. So many good buys I wish I jumped on when they arose
I missed out on my favorite Seiko Pressage because I say too long. Evidently the sale was only for one day. 😮
@@tufelhunden5795 what presage was? Iliterally bought one few days ago hahah a white dial one
Finally! Those are amazing tips for novices. So far it's the best video I found on how to get the best deals on used watches. Thank you Chris.

Good advice. Patience is key in the long run. Quick hits can/do happen. But that can’t always be wins for people.
Very helpful. Thank you. Curious, what is the watch at 21:02?

Good advice Chris.
At 26:33 I think you forgot to do an edit.
Yep, I noticed that after I had uploaded a little too late... Lol youtube are giving us more ability to post edit so hopefully I can fix that

👍👍👍 Nice Watch and Elegant Watch , Best knowledge about Watch by Watch Expert + Watch Chris 👍👍👍
I learned a few things, thanks.
Excellent episode full of useful tips. Thanks for sharing.
Ask for timegraph images. Make sure they lift angle correct. A good watch be in good time.

The angelus minute repeater is a stunner!
It's incredible esp for the price! Thanks for the comment!!

What are your thoughts on Grailzee? I don’t like that you have to become a member to look.

That guy from 1916 Company is legit.
Can’t be afraid to lowball. Someone might just accept the offer
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Remember the saying, you make your money when you buy the watch, not when you sell it.
The Rolex fakes getting so good. . . I mean, can't you just check the movement? Surely they can't replicate those perfectly

That is like your opinion man. Who is to say that your definition of a watch collector is more correct than mine.
I bet you're fun at a party...
