Exploring the Limits of a OEM 2JZ Cast-Iron Block | Over 1600 Horsepower Baltic Supra 2JZ Teardown

- Lets dive into the limitations of a factory Toyota block and where we found a failure in this instance.
Pedro, Baltic Supra, stopped by with his near 2000hp 2JZ engine for a tear down and diagnosis after his recent engine troubles. In this case, it seems to have been a cylinder sleeve failure that simply wasn't able to keep up with the engine at this power level. While this isn't a common problem we see on 2JZ engines, it is one of the issues someone at this power level begin to encounter. To combat a failure like this, Pedro plans to take a step in the right direction with a billet block. While a stock Toyota cast block could be put back in, at this level it remains a gamble of not if, but when the block will let loose.

Jays outlook on things never ceases to amaze me. Dude is a straight up savant.
Thanks for the kind words Paul!
Race Family. Thankful to have Real st in our corner from the earlier beginnings of Baltic Supra. Still blows my mind how far this car has come. Excited for 2023 #Billet
14k$ for a Titan Motorsports Billet 2jz race block
@@CraaaigV302 can get bullet for 11k
@@CraaaigV302 Yea ... and and i am SURE he is not paying $14k for that billet block that Jay already has with his name on it.
I think for your situation billet is the future. I sense a new Only Fans content creater incoming. 😆

I'm not yelling at you.. ***Jay's internal monologue is yelling quite a lot!!*** 😂😂
Haha had the same thought!

Real St should award him a customer of the month award at this point 😂

thanks to both of you for sharing this content.
keep pushing that supra!
I would have said "I cleaned the inter-cooler and charge pipes so that had to be the Engine builders fault" LOL

Very true 👍 well said I wouldn't have been able to hold a streat face from being upset at myself!! Just me !!
Jay tells it like it is, he is at the power level he needs to upgrade and we have all been there. Reliability is your best ally in racing and being able to manage power.
The thing about Jay is he understands the pain of motor failures and understands the addictive drug of racing. I no longer have my own race car, but i live working on other people's. It's a lot more enjoyable when it's not your money you're burning anymore lol.
If I had more friends like Jay telling me how it is I wouldn't be so damn stupid
I've been looking forward to this video! Can't wait to watch the assembly of the billet unit
Jay and Pedro are the new Dom and Brian.
OEM block with Darton sleeves will do more than the stock block without going full billet ... should work on that platform now. And 1st! :P
You will get 99% of debris out of an intake or intercooler, especially an intercooler. You can spray with air and flush with water but you will have a piece(s) stuck inside almost always. It may stay stuck in the intercooler forever and be just fine or it may get unlodged and go through the engine. Always replace the intercooler or play russian roulette everytime you do a pass
Love to see these tear downs … learned so much about HIGH hp quality builds
"This is cool and it's nobody's fault. This is not cool and it's somebody's fault"
Bruh when I tell you I got quiet like it felt like a parent about to rip into me. Dudes face was priceless.
I was waiting to hear go sit in the corner😅
I can listen to Jay talk engines all day long. Would be amazing to have an engine built by the legend.
You too together make some of the best videos I've seen on TH-cam!
Love how Jay is straight on him about debris. Shows how much he cares more than anything.
Man this happened to me too I know exactly how this guy feels.
Jay is an absolute genius and always informative!
at 10:55. Btw the guys at Bain Racing in AUS always do chamber reshapes. They weld the damaged spot of cylinder heads and completely reshape it though both hand and CNC porting. They also it with intake and exhaust chambers.
Reshaped heads are not unusual. But like he said, welding an original cast head makes it weaker. They are pushing it pretty hard.
Not the oem one's.
@@RustyWells2 There are only OEM cast cylinder heads.
Love this channel! I feel his pain. I pushed the GEN3 Hemi platform from 2010 to 2015 trying to run 225mph in the standing mile. After destroying 7 engines, 3 transmissions, 2 convertors, I said the hell with it!!! I had a 3,100HP Twin Turbo BBC built for the car....Mo Money Mo Money 🤣
Damn! This video really hit home for me. Sometimes the old way is now outgrown and it’s time for the next part or configuration to support your goals. Going through this now with a transmission. Being at a crossroad is difficult because you don’t want to make a poor choice, or another poor choice lol. Thanks for making these videos. Super appreciate it! 🙏👊🏼
Pedro-pulls up with blown 2J.
Jay: this isn’t a junkyard this is a garage.
I said a 10 second car not a 10 minute car
"My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard" 😅
We've almost all been there, gotta laugh about it hahah, built it, race it, break it, repeat...
I legit want to just sit in jays engine building room and just watch him build 2j’s and listen to everything he’s gotta say for literally my entire life. But I guess I’ll take it for a day. Lol
I like Jay's to the point and uses the situation as a teachable moment. Yeah it is a bummer that this happened, it was 100% avoidable. Mistakes happen, own them. Not going to do that again.
Race fam is a big W
Jay was talking to him like a dad talking to his son with the classic "I'm not mad at you I'm just disappointed"
Its amazing to think about it though: If treated carefully and with no NOS just 30-40 psi of boost, good AFR a stock 2JZ block with beefed up internals can easily make reliable 1000+hp. Pushing all the way to 1600hp on NOS aswell is the point of failure then.
That milkshake brought Jay to the yard
As a long term jz owner factory blocks have seen 2500 hp.street duties.they will peel open at 75 psi.its tuning that's hurting it.its been done and done.jzs built on a engine stand is a big problem.
@8:14 Jay's looking real impressed 🤣
I was feeling bad for Pedro on that scolding 🥹😂😂
AWWW MAAAAAN… I hadn’t been keeping up with Pedro for awhile and hopped back on YT to hop on his channel to see this 🤦🏾♂️😪😭
It was comedic how this episode began 😅 I thought this was a re-upload and then quickly realized he blew his newest builld! Being competitive is a blessing and a curse. 😂
Thanks for keeping it real. He hasn’t stopped thinking about that billet block since you mentioned it in the last video.
The very strategic placement paid off, Jay lmao
Look forward to the billet build assembly video 👌
i wouldnt even think about an 88 without the billet block or the dart block to come
Billet all the things 😤🤙
When you Discover with cash back and have Real Street number on your speed dial, perfect combo!
The 2JZ billet block is stronger (new with no mystery history), but it's not impervious to mishaps caused by an obsolete ecu's lack of sensors and controls. Also, since this isn't a street car anymore, consider if having a full wet block is necessary. None of the other MKIV heavy hitters run full wet regardless of what they tell you. Been that way for at least 15 years in my experience. Put the billet block money towards a modern ECU, otherwise this will happen again. I wouldn't run an AEM v2 (or even Infinity) on a BPU Supra.
What ECU would you run?
@@daltonhanleyjr4142 Motec M150 like every other MKIV Supra race car.
@@96SupraTT Thanks for the info. My car has been in the garage for many years and I want to revive it.
Haha Nutter pedro! Can’t wait to see what comes next! Love Real Street ❤️
So it's definitely billet?
Not the Dart cast iron piece?
Can't wait to see can't wait to see!
Stuff can get wedged really well inside an intercooler. They need cleaning really well or sometimes replacing if contaminated.
Learning stuff love it Jay such off real street 🏁 teacher💯❤💤🙏
you all should hate this man. hes the reason we are having issues sourcing 2j parts and heads. this derp right here blowing up everything every other run. this derp should have switched to billet years ago with his negligent spraying.
Love your videos!
I love these man videos man!!! Feel awful for Pedro tho 😭
Any time i see a failure with metal in the air handling, the cooler gets replaced. If the customer declines, they have to sign a waiver that there is no warranty and the cooler gets cleaned
He said their like family and he told him off like he's was his uncle how's been mentoring him 🤣🤣
It's called, chasing the weak link. Fun, fun, fun.
I would definitely take a close look at the hot side of the turbo after anything foreign going through
Could you please explain how he could be more careful with the nitrous? I assuming maybe something like twin dry solenoids one larger one for transbreak and maybe a smaller shot than 150 if u want use it throughout the run
I wish I could relate but I only push 500hp in my 2jz lol but damn that's crazy how the block cracked like that
I guess I’m the only one who missed the ultimate cause of the failure.
Was it the debris in the intake that caused damage in the combustion chamber, which then allowed water to enter the engine? Or was it something else?
Exceed the power levels of the factory block. Car saw around 2000hp and the block gave out
Too much power cracked the block, the beat up piston and cylinder head were unrelated to the coolant issue
Thanks for the replies!!
Exactly what J said that feeling over looks the bad or we are just that much of a Adrenaline junkie!!!!
I would think the milkshake that went through the engine also had an impact on the bearing wear, not just aeration.
I feel sorry for the builder, other guys an absolute wombat
Gate love that slippery slope.
Time to get that Dart block
whaty are those horizontal scratches on the rod bearings??
Jay, you need to talk to the roadkill guys to mod their 2jz death metal charger more!
I think Larry from Drag International with the orange S15 is running a cast block. You may want to talk to them and see what they are doing to keep their engine alive. Like others have stated in the comments your ECU is probably the cause of the engine failure.
Their Block has the water passages filled making it stronger. Pedro wants to retain the cooling system so this cannot be done on his block.
@@realstreetperformance Thanks for the info. That makes sense. Are you going to upgrade Pedro's Ecu to a Motec like the one you run on your white car.
Limiting factor?? Std wet sump oiling.
Wet sump to deaerate the oil, use an oil cooler. And external filter, With 3/4" lines.
Time to try out the new Dart block? Oops there it was at 3:20. I thought they were out! dang. Talking about oil aeration and dry sump systems, what do you think about the Dailey Engineering oil/air separator that goes between the scavenge pumps and tank?
oil air separators are normally for r35's because they dont have a baffle system built into the valve covers
i mean one of these guys that sort out the scavenged oil rather than crank case separation. It does blow by separation as well tho. th-cam.com/video/qJxMNcHRvpU/w-d-xo.html talks about it around 1:20. I'm no expert of dry sumps but it seems like most just send foam back to a baffle tank and hope it'll settle. I've used the last bit of oil from an air pressurized bulk oil system enough that i don't trust baffles to do jack all about air milkshake. Also I don't know jack all about the hydrodynamics of a pressure pump to know how much sending in 20% nothing vs 5% changes what comes out. Seems like 15% density but sometimes ish isn't intuitive.
@@slfrules1 yeah it does, that the point of the product. but engines like 2j's and RB's don't need or use one because they have built in baffle systems in the cam covers. All the bad oil then goes into a catch can.
yea i know about those but a dry sump shouldn't have a pcv system or a catch can. I'm talking about a separator for the scavenged oil before it goes into the sump tank. Between scavenge pumps and the tank.
Stock block will work filled with cement, but very heavy. Go solid billet aluminum no coolant on methanol.
Just how strong are billet blocks? Is there really no "mistake" that could be made that would break a billet block also?
I think it's also very important to mention..many have done alot better with the jz then real st..has done.his style is drag motors. Seems to be others are doing better ..
Go hard or go home, only the Pedro's know that. ✌
At least you have a billet block available to be able to buy. I am not so lucky. I need a Billet VQ block and a couple of my buddies do too.
What kind of power are you making?
@@joshr8680 Anything over 900whp it becomes a problem. Made 1004whp but mistakes were made on the tuner side. I have no choice but to turn it down.
@@spooler7828 even with a sleeved block?
@@joshr8680 Yup, the factory VQ casting is no where near as good as a VR38. If you drive the car and use it as intended, it will let go. 800whp is right where you need to be for longevity.
@@spooler7828 man that sucks, it really comes down to the manufacturers casting process tho
B18 Honda blocks hold 1400whp
B20 blocks crack at 350 just because a casting design
@realstreet How about you build him a billet block on patron and allow us to subscribe? That will offset some costs!
Is it better to put in an A90 stock long &short block?
What do you think about using ceramic oil additives like Ceratec? Lots of coyote guys use it including me with good results.
Jay 4 Prez
Genuine question... I notice the Toyota oil filter. What oil viscosity is this engine running, and what is the micron rating on that filter? Any restriction on the oil flow through the filter? All bearings and journal surfaces appear to be living happily so I would assume no issue there but just curious.
Billet blocks have limits as well..
Precise tune and limit nitrous
Long live the billet !
Wish I could work at Real st.
Pedro needs a Barra Turbo
Your that 1 clown
Said nobody else ever.
So what was your power at the time of it breaking...and what would you recommend me to do to my 2jzge non vvti to push it to 650-750whp
A bloke I know here in Australia just went over 1000hp tires on a STOCK 2JZ GE , It only lasted a few months after that but lasted a few years running about 650hp tires , SEND IT 👍
Sleeve was not thick enough and it cracked?
Time to try dart 2jz block
I know first hand making 7-8 hp per cubic in on a 2.0 it will tear stuff up if you aren’t careful.
Great content as usual, what kind of boost level did this happen at?

Someone needs to tell this guy that even 2jzs have their limits.
Cryo treatment + wpc coatings
Do you guys have any clue what kind of power the stock rb26 engine can take ?
I have a feelin that chip piston may be one reason why it cracked.
I see your problem. The ice cream in your engine melted. You obviously need a better freezer for that thing. Problem solved, you're welcome 😊
Welcome to the, "I feel like an Idiot" episode. Been there, done that.
At this level you must have DEEP POCKET of $$$ to sustain your hobby, otherwise you going broke fast.
What are those pink/purple caps on the block? (I see 4 on the side)
ah, freeze plugs
Balls deep supra keeps breaking things
Wish Jay could help me with a 4G63T "street" build.
We need a follow up....
If you grind off all the high spots wouldn't compression be down on the one cylinder
Sounds like a dry sump with air/oil separator is needed... i know where you can get one! :)
J yelled at hem in lowercase words.
Darts new cast block or go billet. I personally dont think the cast block is worth the price considering the extra weight added.
Never heard J sound so made hahah JK he just wants people to know it's important
