ive had the orbi for about 5 years.. it has been an incredible system... Im a standard user, but i have about 150 devices on the network...but its fantastic, even the first version which i have.
Your review and setup info was clear and concise, and made it easy to choose this product. Very happy with the doubled speed tests on the satellite about 100 ft across the house.
I appreciate the video, I didn't consider that it would need a reset coming from a refurbished purchase (I was getting pretty frustrated) - and that worked!
Thank you so much for this installation guide. I'm actually watching this guide because, believe it not... there was no installation guide included! A "Let's get started" piece of cardboard & a "Don't take this back to the store" notice. Alright then. Your guide was clear, and to the point. What more can a newb (with a short fuse) ask for? You just got to it, and did it. That was big.
The app is limited and I wasn't able to set it up correctly. After I used the browser everything worked fine. Highly recommend the browser setup over the limited app.
Thank you very informative looks like a winner to me. Thank You. Clear and great instructions. But what you have a wireless router that just not cutting it .how do switch the WIFI off.
very well explained, my current set up is through a apple time capsule where the ethernet cable from the ISP is directly connected. The Orbi RBK 50 system requires a modem to connect, can the time capsule be configured to work as a modem in this case? if its possible, how would i go about it. Any assistance in this regard would be highly appreciated.
Thanks for going through both the app and the web browser interface. Not sure you'll monitor this comment area, but... My question here in 2024 is how do you set up the Orbi when you have another router and want it to act as an Access Point, not its own wifi router (can't have two running, apparently)... I have a T-Mobile Home device that provides wifi on the 2.4 and 5 ghz frequencies. Some of my devices (garage opener, cameras, etc.) want the 2.4 signal and others work well on both. That works well with the TmH router as I can choose, but when I extend the wifi network with the Orbi (also supports both bands), I can only set the 2.4 channel to be an access point. Any ideas on how I can adjust both? From the browser admin, using the Advanced tab and Advanced Settings submenu, it seems to offer just the one 2.4 channel. Is it really making both channels to work as access points? Thanks!
I loved the video, but I do have three questions. 1. I am under the impression that the Orbi can use my 2.4 ghz connection or my 5.0 ghz connection. How can I select which speed that I want to connect to? 2. My current WiFi works pretty well except that my ISP setup my modem in my basement. It’s an expense to move it to my first floor so I’d like to leave the modem in the basement. The problem is that my first floor and basement have great connections. Unfortunately my top floor can be a problem. Am I better of with an extender like the new Nighthawk X4S Tri-Band or replacing my existing router with the Orbi system? 3. Am I correct that using the Orbi system that I cannot hardwire my computer from the Orbi system directly into my computer like I do my current router? Thanks
Great video... we don't have kids (or I'm not concerned with the previous reply). What this video set the others apart is it gives the logic behind the setup... which I was missing without a manual, and I had to work around an existing setup where our modem had to be replaced. Great job and thank you!
i think im going to connect the orbi router on the first floor in the wall leading to my modem downstairs. That way my router is in a central location in my house. Then im going to add two satalites on the top and bottom floor. hoping to get the best coverage possible.
IF you want to use the satelliteOrby to stream on a smart TV -is there an option-or should you-directly plug an ethernet cord from the satellite into the tV. Thank you
THis is a great video, I understand that I have to turn off wifi on my Fios Router. Can I name the orbi router SSID the same as my fios router, use the same password, so I do not have to change anything on all my devices?
Is there a reason why Orbi and all these mesh WiFi products have a or their main satellite/router NEXT TO ones original router/isp router? I always wondered why.Thank You
I know it's been a while but I got a question. Do you have to put your existing modem router in modem mode or if you turn Wi-Fi option off from it and connect your Orbi to it will just work?
about ti get this product. hope it works the way u said. thanks for instructions. i think it will help. i will hit u back about results after i use it a week or so. JB.
I have a question, im looking at buying orbi model #RBK753S as it looks about the same maybe a little newer with 2 satellites. Anyhow my question isssss… I have a t3200 modem/router, can I just plug this into it and setup with same network name and password as my t3200 and will it work. Reason I want to keep the same as I have security system/cameras smart devices ect. I don’t want to have to change on 50+ items in my home
I had charter's router and the rbr50 was plug into that. Rbr50 worked fine if the charter's router was working. Every day we had to reset the charter's router. Last weekend I bought the rbr20 to replace the charter's router. I plugged the rbr50 into that....... Seem to work. But the rbr50 has the purple glow. Any ideas why
It seems the Orbi network blocks items sometimes. So when I use orbi it will let me into a particular site but if that site access and additional page or popup orbi blocks it. I have Fios and the Fios network does not block it
so what's the speed of the router channels ? also how many items can it handle without starting to slow down , I have nighthawk x8 is it worth upgrading for me ? the only reason I was looking to upgrade is bcause I get crappy signal at the opposite side of my house , currently I'm getting 300mps from my Xfinity provider.
hello thx for the thorough video. in my country the internet providers don't provide modems anymore (VDSL) . can i just connect the orbi to their main router and it will act as a access point/extender of the existing wi-fi? or should i somehow ask from their service to disable the wifi from their router adn rely completely on the orbi. a quick response will be much appreciated.t thx in advance.
My ISP provides a wireless router to which I attached the Orbi router with 300 ft ethernet cable (to locate it in the third floor) and the one satellite in the second floor; I choose the Orbi WiFi on my connected devices (iPhone, laptop) and works fine without changing settings in the router provided by ISP.
Mine seems different? The satellite has a spot for a coaxl cable and no yellow part for internet cable and some rectangular lights at the front while the router has the yellow part, no coaxl cable peice and none of the lights at front
As far as I know I think it automatically detects what would be best for you, and perhaps on how much is being seint/received. That is common for routers and access points these days.
I know this isn't the review. For me the deal breaker with this is the parental controls, which are atrocious. You can only turn off the internet for everyone and not per device. My old setup I would assign an IP address via the mac address and then turn the internet off on my kids at set times per device. Because of this I ended up with the Luma, which has their own issues with setup. I wish netgear would get their act together because I had to return a nighthawk for the same reason.
I see your comment is a year old. You absolutely can turn WiFi off by device now. Maybe at the time it wasn’t the case. But the remote management is beautiful on this. You can classify and manage individual device on the main and guest WiFi. Also, it is capable of wired backhaul now.
I have century link has my internet provider, and it’s a motem/router 2 in 1. Would I just disconnect the router portion of it? Or is that even possible
anyone having trouble logging into the orbi router through the web browser? I am in an infinite loop where it says my password is wrong. Asks for my router serial to reset the password. Asks for security questions. And then says my security answers are wrong.... Frustrating
hi GS very good guide ...I bought a used rbk50 went through the process , selected the orbi57 network and got in but when it gets to the default admin PW on the app ..... 'password' . login fails ...at some point a previous owner has changed this PW ...I click on forgot PW and at once the "unable to connect" message comes,,,I've tried numerous times but all w the same result it goes around in a circle ...is there anything that I can do ...do you think or is the unit useless ? thanks

If I do rest .do I have to start all over again? because I have some devices blocked and I can't unblocked The program doesn't show me my block devices
Thanks for the video - very good explanation. I have the 2.0.0.74 version of the software and have experienced continual internet drops. I contacted Netgear support and advised that I have a dual modem/router (M/R) with Comcast/Xfinity set to bridge mode. I asked them if the Orbi should be in router mode or access point (AP) mode and was told it definitely should be in router mode and not in AP mode. Their solution to the problem was to change the channel setting on the 2.4G band, but that hasn't worked. I can't find anything that would suggest a better solution, so I'm thinking of trying the AP mode despite what Netgear says. In order to do that, however, wouldn't I have to contact Comcast and have the M/R set back to non-bridge mode? Also, one proposed solution I found online referenced using AP mode and setting IP passthrough (IPP). I don't think you mentioned IPP in this video, so I'm assuming it is not needed. Is that correct?
seurat01 my man you have the old firmware you need to update to the new one that just came out. So you have to do two updates it’s a pain in the ass lol
The optimal position for my satellite would be about 45 ft from the base station (though only through one wall). Do you think it will have trouble reaching that far?
+jaydeeification it would depend on the construction of the house. It definitely has the ability to go 45', but the type of material that the wall is constructed of does have a difference.
Thank you so much! I’m not techie at ALL and you made this very easy and didn’t waste anytime with the small talk! Great video!
Solid tutorial - I love it. Proper shots of the physical setup and the app setup
ive had the orbi for about 5 years.. it has been an incredible system... Im a standard user, but i have about 150 devices on the network...but its fantastic, even the first version which i have.

Sorry no. The Orbi system is just a router and not a router/modem like you would get from your isp.
Stu's Tech Time no longer true, Orbi has a model CBK40-100NAS that has a built in modem & router.
Great video, thanks for posting

Do you have to buy orbi router if you already have a router will the extenders just work ?
Costco has them too, thanks for a great tutorial video:)
Just bought at Costco on sale Orbi 3 pack for $299.
Got on 5-22-2019.

very helpful, by the way, I am 73 and was able to do this
Good job young man.
This is a router or a extender
Can you pick which band you want to connect to? 5g or 2.4g? Love the video, I may pick this up. Have a great weekend +

I have a Comcast/Xfinity router/modem combination unit. Exactly how should I disconnect the router from the Comcast unit?
Unplug it.

+Scott O'Connor get the router you want and add the Circle by Disney
The Circle by Disney app is now included with the Orbi as a free option
How about google wifi? Can you turn off the internet on per device using google wifi?

@@Morawka1 yikes!
Can you connect the Sattelite with the Orbi router via a RJ45 jack for faster connection. And does the Guest Wi-Fi have a bandwith limitation?
MauriceNL yes, you can now

I have century link has my internet provider, and it’s a motem/router 2 in 1. Would I just disconnect the router portion of it? Or is that even possible
i'm wondering the same thing~ CL definitely needs help to cover the whole house!
Will this work with satellite internet like viastat we have a router with built in modem now
Thanks
Ty so much
Can i connect rbs20 (satelite) to rbr40 (router)?
nicely done.
You should have finish teaching how to work inside the admin site.
Why would I want a fresh ip address on my modem?
What if you want to use ethernet backhaul?
What is max speed of an Orbi?
Very well explained, thanks.
I still can't get mine to connect to my backroom tv
What is your opinion, I live in an Old home two story 3K sq. ft. real lath and plaster very dense. Do you think it will work in this environment?
Yes. That is exactly what this system is designed for.
I'm new to this type of stuff, do you have to pay every month? Is there a bill? Do you need another Internet connection?
No. You are safe.
anyone having trouble logging into the orbi router through the web browser? I am in an infinite loop where it says my password is wrong. Asks for my router serial to reset the password. Asks for security questions. And then says my security answers are wrong.... Frustrating
I'm about to throw it out the window I see the wifi but it still has a lock on the little picture on the wifi
My ISP/Cable TV does not require external modem. You connect any router via RJ45 cable to the data plug Cat 5/6. Will this work without modem?
No, in that case, you need to buy MODEM CUM ROUTER of ORBI
Works for me, but I live in Norway

Did you ever figure out, I have the same problem?
Did your orbi have high latency that made online gaming impossible?
Can I use this without a internet provider?
Can I create a QR code for log in to this for my family and friends?
Do you have to use the app especially if you're not using the satellites?
It is designed for App setup
Speed v get is from satellite or from both
In the video, you keep saying router. Is it a router/modem combo, or will a dedicated modem be required for install?
Solomon Cook - modem is required for the install (usually provided by your internet service provider). This will act as your router.
This is a router, no modem, however they do offer a modem combo unit from Orbi now.
did you use the ethernet cable from that small modem in the beginning of the video into the orbi router?
Yes
@@GeekSmart Then you have two routers in line - this is not good. One of the routers must be set to BYPASS.
@@John-B91 You have no idea what you're talking about. He connected his modem to router with the cable, not router to router.

Sure, it all connects the same way. By the way if your DSL is crappy to begin with, it is not going to make your interent faster lol.
Can you use this to add to you’re existing router from AT&T?
i suppose yes. Your router is basically a modem with added functionality.

Yeah. MU-MIMO, Mesh solution, with 3000 (1733 + 866 + 400) speeds should suffice gaming needs.
so does the 1st router can be the modem as, or is it just a router ?
Just a router, these are routers, not modems.
Really helpful but so slow, i recommend watching at 1.5 or 1.75x speed
Mine doesn't do blue or any colour . Just goes white and white and white and then nothing .. why's that ?
Maybe you should unplug your modem, plug it back it, then turn on ur orbi. Dont wait 5 mins after after you plug your modem in either.
