I ran into the same exact issue. So happy I watched your video before I got Orbi which made me aware and when I ran into this I knew how to fix it. Thank you! Orbi fixed my wifi issues and I'm glad I decided to go with Orbi!
Dude, I really love what you're doing here. Your first Orbi video brought me to your channel. As your subscriber #250 I can't wait to see the upcoming content and I really hope more people will discover you. Also, props for the quality of your videos, which is pretty unusual for the small channels. HOWEVER - and please, take it as what it is, the good advice - stop staring at me! Like, seriously man, it's creepy af. I know it's gonna change sooner or later with the experience, but you really should take care of that. Besides that, as I said, you're awesome. Keep up the good work! Cheers.
Ha!! First, thanks for subscribing and getting me to 250. We have to start somewhere right? I'll def take your advice to heart. As you mentioned, I'm just starting so I'm getting used to everything so hopefully I keep getting better. Again, thanks for watching!
This happens to every Orbi system. They are great routers but when this happens it almost makes the routers unusable. Thanks for the help. I've had to use this video more than once.
I want to thank you, I had a problem with my first Orbi and returned it and got another one. This time, I did what you said for problem and I installed the router first and did the firmware first and then hooked up the satellite later and after everything was working, wham, and it worked just as you stated. The First Netgear Tech was horrible he took over my computer and told me several things were wrong with my computer and certain things including sound needed new drivers, which would cost me 52.00 dollars. The second Tech was much better, but still didn't fix the problem and resetting took longer and longer, so I returned the first one and returned it and got the second Orbi. The second Orbi has been great, also the first Orbi wouldn't allow us to log into the Orbi Browser at all to do any manual configuration. Great Job here and Great Information. You were spot on here and this Orbi solved the problem that my X6 hasn't, my wife can stream Hulu, Netflix and I can be on the internet, game and watch TH-cam videos on my Ipad and are Smart Things Devices work perfect. Thank you. Thumbs up all the way.
Hi Sid. Glad you got it up and running and I'm super happy that the video was helpful. You'll be happy to hear that I have nothing but good things to say about the Orbi after this first hiccup. Sorry that you had to spend the $52...
I watched you other video and decided to buy the Orbi with one Satelite. Wow I had no idea how complicated it was. No One has mentioned that there can be so many problems. 1. Orbi immediately decided to change IP to 10.1.1.1 After many resets and much guesswork I realised that I had to change my TP Link router to bridge mode. 2. Both my surface3 do sometimes connect to my named network but have no internet. Other times they work. All other devices have internet. Switching to guest network gives them internet. 3. All my LIFX bulbs were not recognised on the network. Finally someone told me to switch the 2.4g network to channel 11 instead of auto and then they worked. 4. Alexa needed 6 different installs until she finally has now stabelised. 5. Bose Soundlink Wave is still not connecting. I am still trying to work the problem out. (Soundlink Adapter is working fine) 6. I didn't realise (should have done the maths) that 4000 ft2 is not that much area. I thought I had plenty of room to play with but by the time you take away some waisted area at the outside of the house where I don't need it and then trying to get it to reach the garden on the other side it really struggles. I cannot put it outside of course, but my gazebo is about 8 metres from the Orbi Sat and I struggle with signal. It is there but very low. Sorry to rave on but perhaps it will help someone. It is so much money and it frustrated me when no one has mentioned any problems. Is it perhaps to new? Anyway I am battling through the problems and I am getting better at it :-) I do like your video by the way. It is much better than the others I have seen.
I guess Im asking the wrong place but does anyone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account? I was stupid forgot the account password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me
@Grayson Beckett i really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and I'm in the hacking process now. I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
This saved me after returning one set thinking they are defective and then trying another. Followed everything until the upload of the firmware for the satellite. I didn't have the option to select the satellite before updating it. Then a few seconds later the satellite said GOOD on the router login browser page, and it showed the current version for both the base and satellite, so I didn't need to do anything. Either I accidentally updated it, or it was already ok. But thank you so much for this video and the tip to only install the base unit to get around the glitch of not being able to continue! thanks!
Tech Gear Talk Good after 2 days of trying. Disclaimer, I have a 4000 ft 2 story and 1gig speed fiber.. I figured out that I have to plug in and make the satellites find the base while still right next to the base in these kinds of setups before placing them. Makes them more likely to be successful. I set up the base and put the satellite in the same room until it’s found. Then I unplug the satellite and move it to a reasonable place and it connects well. I finally have a few hundred mbps speed upload and download in every area of the home except one bedroom. I have a 2nd satellite on order for that room and that should solve it. I’ll use the same process of adding it while it’s near the base and then moving it when the light goes out and it’s all connected and happy. Thank you for this video! Couldn’t get past the firmware issue! Thanks! What will everyone else buying them do, if they don’t know about your video, or aren’t capable of understanding this? Return them all to the store? The company needs to fix this. Thanks again.
Also, the instructions don’t address not using a previous router. I have DSL fiber and don’t need an additional router beyond the orbi. The setup videos and instructions and app could use clarifying and improvement in my opinion.
Tech Gear Talk Thanks. I try. I have more to say on this. I spent 2 days on this and by trial and error and your video it works. It shouldn’t be this hard but I learned a lot. Would be happy to share ideas with you for your future video or wish i could tell Netgear and they would listen.
How are you. Just wanted to let you know I did the install today and it went very smoothly. I did not have to manually update firmware. Thank you for your two videos on the Orbi they were very helpful.
you should just say look for your model rather than that specific model you mentioned lol there are other orbi routers! I have a different model but am running into this exact issue, and if I reboot the router my wifi begins working for a couple days then my devices say connected with no webbernet access. I honestly think it's the update itself because I never ran into this issue until a recent update on my orbi setup. they need another patch ASAP to address this issue.
Hi Ian, thanks for the complement. It's been a great product for me so far. It's on sale now for less than I paid via the link in the description. Let me know if you have any questions.
Looks like once you update firmware on a router, it resets the Traffic Meter stats. I lost all my stats for current and previous month. Already reported this issue to netgear, hopefully they will acknowledge it as a bug.
I know this is an old video and not sure if the messages are still monitored but I've run into a problem. I had a previously set up Orbi system RBR20 router and RBS20 satellite set up. I wanted to expand coverage further out to my garage and got a second hand RBR40 router and RBS40 satellite (purchased seperately). Both firmwares were out of date. Got the router connected and updated however can't get the satellite to update firmware since it was never found on the network to begin with. Trying your method but now can't update firmware for the sat because its not on the list... any suggestions?
Unfortunately, after the attempted update on my satellite, it's no longer able to connect to my router. I just have a slow pulsing white light. I've done the reset, holding it in for over 20 seconds. And still, connection does not work. I've pretty much given up on this piece of equipment. the router still works and I'm going to put it in AB mode and give it to a friend to run their TV through since their Spectrum app is pretty horrific. Other than that, I'd be recycling it at the dump.
Thank you very much for this vid. Was very helpful in set up. The app originally wouldn’t set up firmware on the satellite. Was driving me crazy. How did NETGEAR not fix this by now???
Tech Gear Talk just bought it last week and tried hooking it up yesterday. Not sure if it was because I was trying to do it on my brothers iPhone older 6S. Regardless, it happened.
Anyone faced an issue after connecting the router to the satellite, where the Orbi router was not connecting to the internet and you see the message 'Failed to connect to the network' when trying to connect?
I tried this today. Unfortunately, you don't get the .IMG files when you download the firmware file. You get a .CHK file and the system doesn't recognize it. I even tried changing the extension. No go.
This didn’t work can’t use computer when there’s no internet. But it’s still blinking white. I reset it numerous times and yet still nothing. It’s been unplugged along with the modem. Nothing is working.
If I have a 2600 sq ft home and use the Orbi system with the base and 2 satellites, could that interfere with the speed of my wifi because the house is too small for a 3 Orbi system? The reason I ask is that my house is over 115yrs old and my router is in the back of the house downstairs and my bedroom upstairs is the furthest away, so I wanted to put one satellite in the front of the house and the other in my bedroom. thanks for your help! Great Video!
Hi Greg. No, a 3 Orbi system will not interfere with the speed. You should be good to go. I'm not sure you even need to get the larger system but it will definitely not hurt! We appreciate you supporting our channel.
I only got the 2 unit system so 1 router and 2 satellite. The router is on the second floor at one end of the house and the satellite is on the first floor in the middle of the house. If you look at the walkthrough (starts at 1:16) and then pause it at 1:24 (right after I come down the stairs) you will see the Orbi satellite on the left side on a wooden chest. it's probably about 60 feet (a little over 18 meters) away if there was direct line of sight.
Again I have this problem ever since 8PM yesterday that my internet of orbi goes down all of a sudden. It has connected with spectrum internet only. I already had looked online multiple times by unplugging the cords and turning off the orbi router while also unplug the satliete orbi upstairs. Waited a bit and plugged it in again to Ethernet wire the router came and still it doesn't work after doing all this. Hate this shit a lot
Hi Chris, The patio is covered with full signal strength. I tested connection by my detached garage which is approximately 75 feet away from the Orbi router (which is on the second floor by a window). It tested at 24.08Mbps. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks for the information. At the time I watched your first video, my Orbi had not arrived; thus somethings I didn't understand. I'm switching my old router (Linksys EA4500 Dual-Band N900) to Netgear Orbi kit. It came in now I'm trying to figure out where to place the satellite in a single floor house (2550 sq ft house). any suggestions. Thanks ahead of time.
I'm assuming that the Router is right by an exterior wall. I would place the satellite in the middle of the house (or even towards the other end of the house). If you get a good connection (solid blue) on the satellite, then you're good to go. Let me know how that works out.
I use Orbi to support my home wifi- have a 1 gig line from comcast but my orbi caps out at only 450 MBPS. While I am wired, I get around 950 MBPS. Can you please guide me to trouble shoot?
Put the satellite in the same room as the base station until its completely set up and working. Then unplug the satellite and place it further away in a reasonable place and plug back in and let it go thru the light show again. That worked for me.
Hi , I just purchased the ac 3000 orbi system. the newest firmware is os 2. something including a daisy chain update. What i was wondering was do you think i need to manually update the firmware like you did in your video or do you think i can just update all the firmware upon initial set up. thank you
I would first try to do the automatic because it is probably fixed by now. If it doesn’t work, then go the manual way (it’s really not bad at all). Let me know what happens.
Hi there. I don't believe so because the devices only see the network - I not the individual "components". How do you know that they are going to the router directly. This is the case even if you're "outside' of the router's direct path? (meaning if a satellite is between you and the router)
Hi, I want to ask if you ever get dropped from your internet connection? I have verizon fios, so I have to connect my orbi router to the verizon router/modem. But I keep getting dropped signal every 2 hours from multiple different device, not just one. So let me know if you experience this or not. Thanks.
That is not something I experienced Angela. Have you updated to the latest firmware? Also, I'm assuming this doesn't happen if you connect to the Verizon router/modem without the Orbi?
I also seem to get disconnected from the Orbi quite often. When I first got the Orbi, it was awesome but now it continuously disconnects. I often have to reboot the router. I've updated to the latest firmware and still no change (actually kinda worse).
It's been pretty rare. Sometimes if I'm running really fast through the house it loses connection and then reconnects automatically (but I can see it on the phone). So once you disconnect, it won't reconnect until you reboot the router? Are you in an area where you think you're connect "through" the satellite or directly to the router? I know that's a total guess, just curious.
Tech Gear Talk It usually comes back online if I give it time, but usually I’m in the middle of something online and need that connectivity immediately. So I just reboot. I have the main router upstairs where the modem is and the satellite is downstairs. So it’s probably connecting through the satellite.
Thanks for the feedback Johnny! If you had coverage issues, it will be totally worth it in the long run! My brother in law just set this up in his house and it's being great! Let me know how it works out if you end up getting it.
Tech Gear Talk - well just to update you ... I've gotten the fastest speed ever recorded on my iPhone 7 ... 331.22 Mbps - averaging the mid to late 200 Mbps, so I am more than happy, the satellite was placed on the opposite side of my house , the kitchen, where I got 9 Mbps and I'm now getting 170 -250 Mbps so you were right - its a heck of a set up - my thanks !!!!
That's awesome!! I'm so jealous of your speed :( Even better now that you get to really use it everywhere. Thanks a lot for checking back in and reporting your results!
I don't know what is going on it works just fine when I 1st got it then it got turned off for a month Came back fucking them turn on we'll not get Internet now
Thanks for watching Fred. I believe this issue has been resolved. All of my firmware updates have been done automatically. I think it was just a glitch when they first released it. Have a great day.
I would hope the issue was resolved. What you described, while very resourceful on your part, sounds to me like I would have just packed everything up, and returned to manufacturer. This is 2017 and things should just work ( I am an engineer, BTW and won't tolerate bad designs). Your video was excellent for those who are determined to use the product. I would buy a product like this from BestBuy locally, if it doesn't work properly, back it goes.
That makes sense and I would imagine that many users would feel the same way (which is why I'm assuming it has been corrected). I normally think of "what would my mom do" when it comes to user experience. And she probably would not have known how to proceed (other than maybe calling me). My dad would have probably called support. After almost 2 years of no internet here I was quite motivated to test this out. I will tell you that it has been awesome ever since I installed it. I now look back at the annoyance of having no signal in half the house and I'm so glad that's a thing of the past.
I ran into the same exact issue. So happy I watched your video before I got Orbi which made me aware and when I ran into this I knew how to fix it. Thank you! Orbi fixed my wifi issues and I'm glad I decided to go with Orbi!
So glad this was helpful. It's really a quick fix and I was hoping it would help others. It's rewarding to see that it helped. Thank you for watching!
Dude, I really love what you're doing here. Your first Orbi video brought me to your channel.
As your subscriber #250 I can't wait to see the upcoming content and I really hope more people will discover you.

1. Orbi immediately decided to change IP to 10.1.1.1
After many resets and much guesswork I realised that I had to change my TP Link router to bridge mode.
2. Both my surface3 do sometimes connect to my named network but have no internet. Other times they work. All other devices have internet. Switching to guest network gives them internet.

I do like your video by the way. It is much better than the others I have seen.
This is what your Orbi review video was missing! Great production value and very informative and concise! Thanks!
I guess Im asking the wrong place but does anyone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account?
I was stupid forgot the account password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me
@Sam Korbyn instablaster ;)
@Grayson Beckett i really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and I'm in the hacking process now.
I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Grayson Beckett it worked and I actually got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thank you so much you saved my account :D
@Sam Korbyn happy to help =)
Thank you for a clear and concise video on how to update the Orbi Router and Satellites manually. Extremely useful.
This saved me after returning one set thinking they are defective and then trying another. Followed everything until the upload of the firmware for the satellite. I didn't have the option to select the satellite before updating it. Also, the instructions don’t address not using a previous router. I have DSL fiber and don’t need an additional router beyond the orbi. The setup videos and instructions and app could use clarifying and improvement in my opinion.
You make some super solid points!
Tech Gear Talk Thanks. I try. I have more to say on this. I spent 2 days on this and by trial and error and your video it works. It shouldn’t be this hard but I learned a lot. Would be happy to share ideas with you for your future video or wish i could tell Netgear and they would listen.
Thanks, for taking the time to make and post this solution video!
You're very welcome. I really hope it was helpful.
Thank you for getting back to me. I will try the auto set up tomorrow and let you know what happens.
You’re very welcome Paul. Good luck!
How are you. Just wanted to let you know I did the install today and it went very smoothly. I did not have to manually update firmware. Thank you for your two videos on the Orbi they were very helpful.
Sweet. Glad to see that they fixed it. I’m super glad those videos were helpful. They were the beginning of the channel for me.

I hear you. When I made this video - 4.5 years ago - there was one model. Let me know if you resolve it.
Excellent video! Thanks for posting. Genuinely considering picking this up, maybe in the new year. Expensive, but looks incredible.
Hi Ian, thanks for the complement. It's been a great product for me so far. It's on sale now for less than I paid via the link in the description. Let me know if you have any questions.
Will do! Thanks again! Happy Holidays! Sending best wishes from Ireland.
Sorry for the late response. Happy New Year... one year later :D
Looks like once you update firmware on a router, it resets the Traffic Meter stats. I lost all my stats for current and previous month.
Already reported this issue to netgear, hopefully they will acknowledge it as a bug.

Thank you very much for this vid. Was very helpful in set up. The app originally wouldn’t set up firmware on the satellite. Was driving me crazy. How did NETGEAR not fix this by now???
Hi David. Super glad it was helpful. I’m really surprised that it’s still happening.
Tech Gear Talk just bought it last week and tried hooking it up yesterday. Not sure if it was because I was trying to do it on my brothers iPhone older 6S. Regardless, it happened.
You’ll be happy to hear that once I had it set up, it’s been working great!
Tech Gear Talk lmao!!! That was my next worry. Thank you.
You should be good to go. It has been rock solid for me.
Anyone faced an issue after connecting the router to the satellite, where the Orbi router was not connecting to the internet and you see the message 'Failed to connect to the network' when trying to connect?
Same thing here
@@naifsati For me, that was because the satellite was not kept close enough to the router. After doing so, that issue was resolved.
I tried this today. Unfortunately, you don't get the .IMG files when you download the firmware file. You get a .CHK file and the system doesn't recognize it. I even tried changing the extension. No go.

Did you ever implement the Orbi? How did it work out?
my problem is the orbi tells me the net work is offline my pc still connects
idk whats happening
Is your PC connected wirelessly? or wired to the Orbi?
Tech Gear Talk wireless
Tech Gear Talk it’s so sad sometimes it disconnects
That is frustrating... I don't have that experience. Are you running the latest firmware?
Tech Gear Talk yes I just built a new gaming pc running Windows 10 it’s not the computer it’s the orbi
The app also says it’s offline

sounds frustrating. I'm sorry :(
,my orbi router still says offline when i login to orbi.. why is that, its already connected to my modem..
Not sure...
almost a year later and i still had the same issues as you
Wow really? Did this help you resolve it?
I’d love to update it but my WiFi isn’t working so I can’t go on Google and update it
Hi thanks for the video, did you happen to test signals on wife outside your house? on patio etc..
Hi Chris,

I'm assuming that the Router is right by an exterior wall. I would place the satellite in the middle of the house (or even towards the other end of the house). If you get a good connection (solid blue) on the satellite, then you're good to go. Let me know how that works out.
Thank you so much!
Your video is very helpful!
You’re very welcome. Did you have the same issue?
Thanks for posting this. Very helpful.
I use Orbi to support my home wifi- have a 1 gig line from comcast but my orbi caps out at only 450 MBPS. While I am wired, I get around 950 MBPS. Can you please guide me to trouble shoot?
If you're wired to the Orbi you still get 950? or if you're wired to your Comcast?
Hi I'm having issues with the router finding the satellite. I have tried the connect buttons on the back but they won't sync
+Brandon Jensen how far is the satellite from the router?
Put the satellite in the same room as the base station until its completely set up and working. Then unplug the satellite and place it further away in a reasonable place and plug back in and let it go thru the light show again. That worked for me.
My orbi rbr50 no start, NO lan no wlan...
Let me know what happens.
once set up my satillite does not pulse the white light like the router. is this normal?
Did you turn the power ON on the back and get the little green light first? Also, did it just now light at all? any color?
My problem with my orbi rbk50 whenever i use my wifi it will disconnect/reconnect. I dunno what to do.
I do not have that experience. Are you using the latest firmware?
Can you force a device to connect to a specific satellite in a certain location? All my devices gravitate to the router and not the satellites
Hi there. I don't believe so because the devices only see the network - I not the individual "components". How do you know that they are going to the router directly. This is the case even if you're "outside' of the router's direct path? (meaning if a satellite is between you and the router)
Thanks
🙏
Good video.
Thanks for sharing
+SuperLaplander Thanks for watching! Glad it was helpful.
Perfect guide
Do I need to purchase internet service? Right now I've AT&T
The Orbi will work with any internet service. You will just connect your modem to the Orbi router.
Thank you!
You're welcome Jerry. Hope the video helped.
Hi. can i add more than 1 Satellite for bigger WiFi coverage?
+Techie4life absolutely! Plug it and the router will detect it and incorporate into mesh
+Techie4life at this point the Orbi supports 2 satellites with support for more coming soon.
Hi! Is it possible to change the wifi channel manually in orbi?
yes it is
Thanks for your quick reply. Do you have a tutorial video for it?
You’re welcome. I do not... if you log into the router, it shouldn’t be too hard to find.
Did your orbi have high latency that made online gaming impossible?
Hi James, that was not my experience. Are you using the latest firmware? Are you plugged into the Satellite or using wifi?
@@TechGearTalk sadly wifi. Wished I could use ethernet. Yes I'm using V2.5.1.8
Can you put the satellite (not router) close enough to where you can plug into it?
@@TechGearTalk okay I can try. Satellite might be to far away from the other satellite if I do this but I'll try.
You're at least removing one of the variables that way.
Thanks for sharing. I need that information.
Is this still happening to you?
Did you consider the eero?
Hi Riaz. I did consider the Eero, but it is only a dual band system which is why I opted for the Orbi. Do you use the Eero?
Liked, subscribed and you've probably cost be €500 , looks like I'm making a purchase - thanks , good concise videos !! 😃
I'm so jealous of your speed :(
Even better now that you get to really use it everywhere. Thanks a lot for checking back in and reporting your results!
My ps4 can’t connect with the internet but the other phone are is connecting
That's strange. I haven't had a device that won't connect (we have a PS4).
I’m having this same problem. VERY frustrating. Have you found a solution?
Chris S I just change the place of the internet
Very good viode! Thank you!
Thank you sir !!!
Thanks for watching!
I don't know what is going on it works just fine when I 1st got it then it got turned off for a month Came back fucking them turn on we'll not get Internet now
this is very good info for everyone, but this is enough to turn me away from this product. Netgear, why so difficult?
Ok
ROSS GELLER!!
LOL!!
