    This channel exists to document unit counters within StarCraft 2. Tya's Unit Tournament features epic battles between units in StarCraft 2, using music from the game's soundtrack. Units are chosen from Protoss, Terran and Zerg forces, or a coop commander such as Raynor, Nova, Artanis, or Kerrigan. Units will independently use their abilities, in a basic way. All units use Legacy of the Void stats, the same units you'd see in SC2 esports controlled by the likes of Serral, Maru, and ByuN. The resource beneath vespene is the unit's cost in the mod I run on the SC2 arcade, Direct Strike. Enjoy!

    I know widow mines are ground units, but they either win outright or lose outright, it's really difficult to fit them into this format.

      It's still interesting to guess though (like Banelings), I'd like to see Widow Mines in stuff. I've done tests with Widow Mines before, sometimes the wins and loses with them can be surprising.
      Also, landed Vikings.

      SCVs actually float a couple inches above the ground, hence making them technically air units.

      You REALLY think something the size of a fucking building would lose to SCVs armed with nothing but a weapon similar to a blowtorch, if the game allowed it the Ultra would just step on SCVs and Marines alike because they would be so small compared to the Ultra.

    Lorewise, Ultraliks are supposed to be like living battering rams, swarms ultimate linebreaker unit. They not exatly work like that in game, as their dumb size makes them prone to pathfindig issues.

      Reminds me of both the HotS opening cinematic and the short story about the Ultralisk (I think it's called Great One). They cleave through human-sized things like nobody's business, and just stomp on the Siege Tank.

      @@cray2362 ah definitely. Thor's are supposed to be quite large as well. And their cannons could probably hurt an ultralisk.
      I remember talking with someone in direct strike how realistic it would be that a ghost snipe an ultra. As in imagine a small bullet on a giant beast like that. Yeah.. realistically nova spec ops ghosts would probably just get crushed under the ultras feets. Not triple tap them.

    After the first couple of times, the fact that a few Ultra's always spend the beginning of the fight just running around the back starts to hurt...

      Ultras should have at least 2 range. And yes, they hit with melee attacks, but being melee with 10m blades always looked weird to me.
      But again... the reason (lorewise) to do splash damage is because they have 2 extra pair of blades, not because those blades are huge.

    Massed siege tanks are absolutely brutal against any ground forces. High damage, long range, and getting the opening couple rounds of attack before most can respond means everything gets pounded before it can even fight back. I especially love them in ranks so its this endless wave of explosions for every foot they move closer.

      The channel really improved the handling of Siege Tanks. These videos used to have the tanks run in and only siege up when the enemy is in their sight range. Do this versus fight a couple of months ago and the tanks would lose because they're not pre-sieged.

      @@amplesstratleholm7609 Nah, tanks have far higher single dps in non-siege mode and while the range is nice, it probably would have been roughly similar or an even harder win for the tanks.

      @@artemis_fowl44hd92 The problem is, the tanks wouldnt generally fight unsieged. They would run into range, then go into siege mode, costing them their entire range advantage because mecha shifting takes a couple seconds easy.. It was about as effective as hydralisks running into melee range before they start launching spikes.

      like for effectiveness? Or coolness? I think BC even though they aren't built much. Only like 4 units can trade favorably with them, and in games you can just jump away behind turrets after yamatoing so you still do better.

    7/8 I'm not sure if it was the ai being dumb or if I just don't know how snipe works but I didn't expect ghosts to lose.

      The main problem is that the Ghosts had no buffer, so once the Ultralisks closed the distance, the Ghosts were toast. Steady Targetting requires the Ghost not receive any damage while they're channeling, and then they do 170 damage if they are successful (so 3 shots will kill an Ultralisk). If it's interrupted or cancelled, the 50 casting energy is refunded.

      Well to be fair, the siege tanks should have time to siege before a slow unit like an Ultralisk would arrive anyway. Forcing them to siege when they are in weapons range make no sense, or run it twice with both ways.

    8/9, just got ghosts wrong. I thought their snipes would come in handy, but the sheer number of ghosts that died mid-snipe was something I didn't consider

It has a 1.43 second cool down but when you use the skill it takes 1.43 seconds to shot but they have to not take damage during that time which is probably why it felt a bit more random when they would use snipe. With ultras aoe a lot of them couldn't use snipe.

I wanna see small numbers of them racing around tracks. I mean, the whole point is that Diamondbacks and Cyclones can move while shooting but that didn't come into play in the video at all.

    Honestly I think Ultras need a buff or something to make them more useful in games. They're so expensive. They're like ground based battlecruisers or carriers but they don't work nearly as well.

      I find they work best as an unexpected tech switch. It's especially brutal against Protoss if their ground force doesn't have many Immortals, and it's a surprisingly good counter against Carriers because the capital ships can't kill them fast enough and there often aren't enough ground forces to stop them from rampaging through the enemy base.
      There's also a nice Ultralisk rush against Terran where they run along a creep highway backed up by Queens transfusing them. (It was used against Ketroc once and he only defended it because a lucky scan revealed an Ultralisk Cavern at 6 minutes)

    So this basically came down to unit density (unsurprisingly). If the ultras could hit ~4 or more units/swing, they won. Otherwise, they got trashed, even against units that normally lose everything, like the cyclone.
    I didn't realize this going in however, so my score is a fat ol' 3/8

      To be fair Ultras already have great splash damage even without the noxious strain. If we are talking about HotS upgrades then Monarch Blades (the upgrade that gives +20 splash damage) would also allow Ultras to tear through infantry.
      If you had Torrasque Ultralisks, then the Ultras probably could win every battle here

    7/8 Holy shit, I expected the cyclones to simply just fold, but no, they wiped the Ultras, and that Hellbat round was too close for comfort, I said “Pfft, Hellbats are going to lose, they’re anti-light and anti-small.” Guess I was wrong.

    Note to self: Thors counter Ultras. Ultras are primarily good at chewing through hordes of small (more units fit into splash range), light (very bad match to an Ultra's quick attacks) units that attack quickly (maximizing the number of times the Ultra's insane armor value is calculated). Thors are none of these things: they are huge, heavy and each hit punches straight through the armor. The fact that they outrange the Ultras is just a bonus.

    Marine VS Ultra tends to be in Ultras favor most of the time, but my hopes sank for a bit in the middle.
    Marauders, unlike Marines, are anti-armor. This can only end one way for me.
    Reapers get eaten alive my Ultras, having 500 doesn't make a difference, but damn if watching that massacre isn't satisfying.
    At first I thought Ghosts because Snipe spam, but then I saw they didn't have the OG Snipe and switched my vote.
    Hellbats are anti-light, but I didn't expect them to nearly win against the Ultras.
    I've seen the first LOTV unit showcase involving the Cyclone, I knew it can crush an Ultra. Without kiting, my doubts were raised though.
    Massed Siege Tanks paste anything on the ground when sieged, no contest.
    Thor VS Ultra, Thors have range and I think anti-armor ground weapon. They win this no problem.

    Ghosts were really disappointing tho...
    Also I've thought that 600 reapers will be enough to just overwhelm ultrals by the numbers, yet, it happens to become just an huge onslaught)

    Only one I missed was cyclones, which I damn near abstained on since i have no idea what their stats are. I don't use them, and I only really see them in Co-op. I know they die to nova's snipe or Kerrigan's kinetic blast. Much past that...? Dunno

      @@HellecticMojo most of what i play is co-op, and nova doesn't get cyclones. as far as micro, i feel like there are just other units i'd rather micro

    The Ghosts did surprisingly bad but everything else went just as anticipated. Ultras are pretty bad against mech. Been that way since BW :P

    Why did 20 Thors beat 20 Ultralisks so easily. Since they are basically the same unit, but just in a difference faction and the Thro can also shoot in the air, but Ultralisks not. So aren;t the Thros way to overpwored then?

    I have this standing rule to not vote when ghosts are involved. They're way too inconsistent with their abilities. Sometimes they use snipes, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they use it more than once sometimes they don't. I think they always use emp, but not snipes. And snipes work on all biological units. The 2v1 ghost versus adept showdown a few days ago didn't have snipes, but it did have emp
