I read today that Johnnie Walker is retiring at the end of the month (Oct. 2024), aged 79, due to ill-health. He has been playing great music for 58 years, from the manic Swinging Radio England to Caroline South, Luxembourg and BBC Radios 1 and 2. Thank-you for the music!!
Superb. I've just found this and added it to my favourites list next to your remix of the Fortunes "Caroline". This was Johnnie Walker's theme tune on Caroline South and elsewhere - thanks again Pat!
There is an interesting story behind the original 1959 stereo master of this song in particular. In 1960, Jamie Records issued the stereo master tape over to London Records in the UK for releases in Europe, but they didn't send the stereo master back to Jamie Records in the UK, forcing Jamie Records to issue this song in lousy rechanneled stereo on compilation albums for many years, until the 1980's, when they finally got the (accidentally) purloined tape back. This song has been in true stereo just in time for the CD era. There was also a story by Jamie Records wiki blog about that they had a 1964 fire at their Philadelphia factory, destroying a number of album jackets and some plating molds for the albums. One Jamie album planned for a 1964 release, Barbara Lynn's never released second album , "Sister Of Soul", which was originally assigned to Jamie album release (JLP# 70-3026-ST.) Because of the factory fire, the album was suddenly cancelled and Duane Eddy's "16 Greatest Hits" was issued in the prefix number's place. This remix is an improvement over the 1959 original mix, which was in UK's London Records vault for many years until they returned the master tape back to Jamie Records.
Great song!
One of my favorite songs of all times.
