The state of Oregon is rich with fossils. The coast has many fossil localitles, but few were blessed with such rich fossil beds as those found at Beverly Beach State Beach. Thousands of fossils of mollusks (clams, snails, and more!), petrified wood, and the occasional mammal fossil; erode out of the cliffs onto the beach. And it's perfectlu legal to collect them as well! What produced this amazing assemblage of fossils, and what allowed these ancienct organisms to survive as fossils? Find out on BetterGeology!

Thank you for your fascinating mini-tutorials. You have answered a lost of questions I had. I have fossils on my property in the Eola Hills outside of Amity, and they are very similar to what you show here. I could not figure out how the calcium shells were so well preserved is they were sea floor shells from the pre-Columbia Basalt Flood era. But you explained that quite nicely in your examples from Beverly Beach. Thanks so much. Keep making new tutorials! I love them!

Scott Gibson is that where the Enola creak comes from? Back in 2008 we stayed in a hotel next to Enola creek at Cannon Beach

Any other sites for legal Fossil digging in the State?

    • @BetterGeology

Harry Kuheim it is absolutely legal to collect fossils here as long as they are loose on the ground, as some in the video are. One of them is on my bookshelf. Other localities exist up and down the coast as well as in the John Day country, provided you’re collecting only plants, fish, or invertebrates.

Something you should know and add to your videos..... In Oregon it is illegal to dig for any fossils or agates on our beaches and cliffsides! If it's on the ground loose you can pick it u up.

Elizabeth Parish Farnsworth yes, I am aware. I try to stay away from encouraging people to collect anything on public land, just because so much is so easily damaged.
