There is a similar tool to this one I found online… the only difference is that there are bolts across the opening that keep the tool from bending and flexing… it works awesome!
👌bro, the threads you count are the ones inside the outer tie rod end but not whats outside on the inner one - the reason for that is very logical; each manufacturer has its own interpretation on how much goes outside (that is not a standard) and you really dont need to measure it, but equally important is how much goes inside the outer one (that is a standard) remember that 👍
I’m trying to so this job on my truck it’s a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4.3L 4x4. But I can’t tell what inner and outer tie rods to buy because there’s different specifications what type of tie rods i need rack steering, power steering or gear steering, power steering? Can you help with this ?
Good video man I watched two others and I don't think the guys had done the job before your video was by far the most helpful However how about the pitman arm replacement I don't think you can do it the same way you did the idler arm
You have to unbolt the steering box and wiggle into where you can get the puller on. Make sure you mark on the steering box and old pitman where it is and secure the steering wheel before removing old pitman. So when you put the new one on everything is still in alignment.
You could also just get a two ton two jaw puller it is really handy for doing a lot on those trucks and you don’t have to buy special fit tools for it I think I paid around 15 bucks for one
If idler and idler arm are both being replaced, can you install the idler arm on the idler outside the truck and then installed the assembly together??
Old comment, but yes you can remove the arm with the bracket together and you can buy a new arm and bracket and install them together outside of the truck and put them in the truck as one piece. Makes it way easier than him not buying the bracket in the video
hey bro take the plastic cover off ur compressor n turn the pressure up to around 150psi instead of the 100psi that its preset at.it will gv your impact an extra kick and wont hurt ur compressor
hey there bro, great video! I learned a lot. My 2002 silverado 2WD has a problem when turning left at a slower speed. When turning ...all of a sudden front right tire I think is a little slow on the turn as it wants to keep going right which means I have to turn the steering wheel a little more to keep on the road. Not as bad when turning right.. Grateful for any idea what It would be or what to check... I still haven't found a video that explains what I am experiencing. Something is definitely worn. Vehicle has 338,000 miles.Thank you in advance for any help and advice
Check your ball joints, upper, lowers, tie rod ends and check your pitman arm. Check ur computer for codes related to ABS sensors, could have bad wheel hub assembly or abs module. If all is good then just get an alignment. Does your brake sputter? Could have bad brakes.
Lol I'm trying to find out the same thing before I order the part or pull it. 2005 z71 5.3 4wld? Would appreciate any info or advice you'd like to offer lol
I just wish ONE person would describe the symptoms as to why they replaced the idler arm. I have some 9 and 3'oclock movement (hand placement location on the front tire while on the lift). I just changed both inner and outer tie rods. It helped some, but not completely. Why are people changing pitman and idle arms? Videos are great, but what PROBLEM is being solved??
And idler arm going bad is a classic steering problem. You definitely get play in your steering when they go out and its fairly common for them to go bad.
Bad idler arms can cause vibration and steering play, an idler arm with bracket is like $80 and a 45 minute job on GMT800, if in doubt just replace them You might also have pitman arm play as well
I don't see the point. You reused the tie rod end, which is the part that wears out. You should replace the whole part. You can find the parts cheaper on eBay. You also need better tools. A clawhammer isn't suited for beating steal parts. Take my word. Buy yourself a 34 mm ratchet wrench for removing the pitman arm from the steering box. Do NOT heat the steering box pitman arm. It will destroy the seal in the steering box.
Wtf you did the idler arm and not the pitman arm, also it's completely pointless the change the idler arm without the bracket and makes it 10 times harder. If you remove the idler arm with the bracket together, then buy both of them and install them together outside of the truck then install them together it's a 45 minute job if that
Great job using basic tools! Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the video! I had been looking for info on the washer for the Idler Arm Support and you gave exactly what I was looking for at 14:11. 👍🏻
Good video, gotta do mine before it gets hot. Thanks....

Wait you never installed the pitman arm. You did the Idler arm.
Thanks dude. Simple to understand and not all fancy for easy do it yourself.
Amazing video thanks
Thank you!

Thanks i appreciate it! think its possible but you will need a bigger puller
You have to unbolt the steering box and wiggle into where you can get the puller on. Make sure you mark on the steering box and old pitman where it is and secure the steering wheel before removing old pitman. So when you put the new one on everything is still in alignment.
Can you put a 2500hd ti rod on a 1500?

I love how you used all harbor freight tools... Just like I do haha
Stuart Johnson as long as it gets the job done lol
The title of this video says pitman arm replacement, but you replaced the idler arm
If idler and idler arm are both being replaced, can you install the idler arm on the idler outside the truck and then installed the assembly together??
I believe you can
Wut

You definitely need to upgrade that Impact gun I've done was seriously struggling get a Milwaukee M18 fuel or a do all or even a Porter cable
it was a air impact since this video I have upgraded my tools
1:23 weak hammer game,🤣😂🤣🤣
Right. Where is the mallet lol
That’s not the pitman arm there Tex.
I have the HF 29 gallon compressor. I like it
The idler arm and pitman arm are two different things.. description says pitman arm but your changing the idler arm...
No one ever puts the torque specs! What are the torque specs for the ideler arm nut?🙂🤔
Tight?
Great video.
thank you!
Counting threads makes absolutely no sense. The replacement part can have more or less threads measuring would be better
As was proven in this video.
I have 1098 Blazor 4wd .remover tool wont between fraim and gearbox
Loosen bolts for steering box on outside of frame
3 spline or 4 splines on pitman arm?
Sir Sweetness And depends on the model of the vehicle
Lol I'm trying to find out the same thing before I order the part or pull it.
2005 z71 5.3 4wld?
Would appreciate any info or advice you'd like to offer lol
@@kwking11 what did yours end up being? My 06 is a 4 spline but my 04 is a 3 spline.

Title is clickbait. You titled it Pitman arm when you replaced the idler arm...
Gotta change the title from pitman arm to idler arm broseph.
No wonder the tie rod ends needed replacing, the look to have not been greased in years. HAHAHA
You don't count threads you measure the tie rod.Just saying
Threads you mean?
That's Right
Good job
thank you for watching!
That was great video and will help me tons. Thanks ERICSDIYGARAGE.
doug thompson thank you i appreciate it!
Counting threads is a waste of time, just make sure your new parts when assembled are the same length as old parts.
I thought the smaller arm went on driver side
He replaced the idler arm not pitman. Idk why he named the video pitman arm replacement.
Pitman arm is bolted to the steering box.
fastener
