There’s plenty of scientists that could fact check someone like Berg, but what makes Gil stand out is the absolute master class in patience and explaining his point without getting in the mud with the people he’s responding to. 👍

absolutely right. And, even though we definitely need way more of this attitude today probably more than ever before, what you see instead is usually either performative drama, or lack of discourse due to weird and illogical reasons like "platforming" and stuff like that. Gil is a standout indeed.

Where Gil stands out from the rest is his background: MD and PhD. I know qualifications aren't everything, but to do (and complete) an MD means you have some knowledge of medicine and to complete a PhD at a top medical school means you have advanced knowledge of a specific area or areas of medicine.
It also, however, teaches you about academic research. Everything Berg and Gil knows comes from peer-reviewed publications and to get papers into top journals, as Gil has done, requires an understanding of all of the possible flaws - methodological, conceptual - that can corrupt a hypothesis.
Berg, Saladino, Eckberg and others simply don't have the training or the expertise to deal with this level of science. They think scanning papers for outcome data makes them an expert. It doesn't: it makes them a reader. And the fact that Berg has just posted a 'reaction' video to Gil that contains even more errors says it all.

I was a brief "follower" of Dr Berg. I went high fat low carb. My LDL and HDL went through the roof. Triglycerides were at all time low. It spooked me enough to check out other content on TH-cam and realized how important information that are based on science.

You will find little healthy food at any fast food restaurant. I think doctors pushing carnivore diets for anybody but the most severe IBS patients should be found guilty of malpractice. I don't even think it's good for short term weight loss as if people are going from eating junk food to eating lean red meat; it's really a low calorie diet in disguise. I read about a stubborn diabetic case where the woman had cut her carbs down to almost nothing, and there was no drop in her blood sugar, because the saturated fat she had replaced it with, had made her insulin resistance worse. Glucose and insulin, don't just go up when we eat a lot of carbs.

For many, a low carb or keto diet works and they thrive on it. Not everyone. But not everyone does well on a vegan diet either. I think people need to play around with their diets and find the one that helps them the most.
As for supplements. I know that he sells supplements, but I haven't seen him pushing them in his informational videos. Maybe he does and I just haven't seen it. I don't watch all of his videos by any means.

I can see use of fear, intimidation and mind control (more specifically, the idea that doctors and big pharma have been feeding you misinformation for a long time, and that this is hurting the general public) in Berg's videos. This is no coincidence. It's what cult leaders are good at. There's always people making false claims on here about how some new food or supplement will lower my blood pressure, blood sugar, improve my sleep etc. I'm an engineer. I say, always fully identify the problem, and that there really is one, before devising a solution. It's easy for people to start taking five or more supplements based on fear, that their body is mostly adding to their urine. They could get their blood tested for a number of things before buying Berg's supplements (which are overpriced just because he is Dr. Berg).

Dr.Berg started me on the low-carb way and it's worked very well for me and close people around me. That being said, you must NEVER take any youtuber/influencer claims at face value. Keep researching, keep studying, reading and THINK for yourself. That's why I enjoy this channel a lot too. For example, the "designing low-carb for heart health" video was very helpful and informative for me.
I keep trying to tweak my personal keto/low-carb diet to align more and more with the evidence for good health. I find it interesting that the Mediterranean diet has a ton of similarity with a healthy keto one and eventually I will blend the two for the long term. Dr. Berg's diet also dismisses a lot of the foods that are associated with dirty and unhealthy keto. Would have been interesting to see Dr. Gil's take on that, although it's somewhat covered in the other videos covering the diets.
Let's stop the tribalism and focus on critical thinking and communication!
Anyway, thank you Dr. Gil for your and your team's work on this channel!

There is an important thing to keep in mind regarding LDL. Dr. Gill is right that the number of particles is what’s important, not the size of those particles. However, the same number of particles of large LDL will give you a higher LDL score than the same numbers of smaller LDL, sine the LDL score is based on total volume. Therefore, when people look at their blood test results, the LDL doesn’t tell the whole story. They have to know the number of particles, and as Dr. Gil says, the best marker would be ApoB, not simply LDL.

The fact that you're not sponsored by anyone and dont have any merch etc is one of the many reasons why I love your channel. You may be wrong about something but if you are, it's not because you sold out. I can watch your videos knowing you are giving what you BELIEVE is the correct information, and what you present is always backed up with studies

I've had a success with switching to eating more plant based, no highly processed foods. More olive oil, no or less butter. Many more nuts. Oats blueberries and walnuts for breakfast. Ldl went from 154 to 94 in 4 months. Wine only on weekends. I exercise at least 8 hours per week which I've done for the last 25 plus years. Before this I cooked with butter, ate meat 5 times per week and a glass of wine nightly. I'm enjoying the new recipes and feel better with the new food choices.

Mediterranean is probably the superior diet. It also has pretty good adherence. I mean, who doesn't love some olive oil, veggies, and salmon?

Great video. Diet dogma is real, especially in the Keto world. Im just a personal trainer, not a doctor, but Ive heard and have tried to address this question over and over again...Does having a low/healthy body fat percentage, doing exercise ( moderate strength training/cardio), and eating overall healthy kind of offset the worry about consuming dietary cholesterol? Of course everything in moderation. I know some science supports that, I just want to hear your take. I for instance, eat 3-4 eggs a day, red meat (grass fed pastured) 3-5 times a week, eat fatty fish, a ton of veg and fruits, and very Mediterranean overall. Half of my plate is green veggies. I have had clients who are very fit ask this as well. Some would look at my eating and thing, hmmm...thats a bit high on the saturated fat....I feel good, I feel my healthiest. Of course thats not evidence. Thanks Gil, I appreciate your videos. Voce tem um bom dia!

There's a lot of flexibility in the Mediterranean diet which seems to be your pattern but it does seem that if you reduced the eggs and meat in half at least you would be better off. However if blood panels are not indicating high aPoB you may may have a genetically favorable profile to continue your current pattern.

Some people are high responders to dietary cholesterol, others aren't. It varies on an individual basis.

I think it depends on your genetics also. If you test your ApoB, and you got an elevated level, yes it's problematic. I can take me as an example who gets very high levels if i go over 10-15 grams per day of saturated fats. On the other hand I got a friend who eats the shitiest diet with ultra processed foods and lots of saturated fats and he has normal blood work.

His video with Dr Dayspring, a lipidologist, addresses dietary cholesterol. I'll sum it: a small minority will be hyper responders, i.e., it will raise their LDL cholesterol, and another small minority will be non responders, but most people will have a dose related response to dietary cholesterol. It's not as influential as saturated fat, but still affects LDL and total cholesterol. As to Mediterranean, eating meat that often is not really Mediterranean. Most people don't know what a Mediterranean diet actually is.

Well I guess that depends on the side of your health you're focusing on. In terms of metabolic health it seems you're doing ok. If your LDL cholesterol and ApoB are bad (not sure if you've had any blood tests done), that could signal a possible cardiovascular health risk that could be somewhat mitigated by your other healthy habits, though still something that you might want to address at some point if you're interested in minimizing the risk further. Dietary cholesterol is generally not something that most people (even unhealthy people) should worry about unless they have familial hypercholesterolemia, which very few do, but the cholesterol in your blood can be problematic and be affected by the amount of saturated fat in your diet.
If you haven't had any recent blood tests looking at that, then I'd say it's best not to assume or guess anything just based on your diet, because different bodies respond differently to different foods, and yours could well be coping just fine (or not).

Same here. He speaks confidently and authoritatively about many things without sufficient support, and often no support at all. This is the first video I've seen from this channel, and it earned an instant sub from me.

One thing Eric Berg said in another video that has made me concerned about reheating food in the microwave. He claims food loses nutrition when reheated in the microwave than if you reheat on a stove/in an oven. (Going by memory here so could be wrong). I use a microwave at work since there is no other choice.
Dunno if there are studies comparing microwaves with stoves/ovens for reheating leftover food or frozen food.

It's been a long time since I've looked it up, but I could swear the FDA has tables online that list foods' nutrients by cooking method.
ETA: it was the USDA and the example did I looked up didn't have a separate microwave listing. Pubmed does have some studies listed. The first one that came up in my search didn't find significant differences, according to the abstract.
