    I’ve previously had an 88 & a 500 over the last few years. I had sold both of em totally regretted it. I have since just picked me up another 88 20 inch pistol grip! Totally love these firearms! Simple, easy to use, clean, disassemble etc. & great defense weapons, very reliable.

    I bought a Mossberg 500 in 1998. Years later I cut the barrel to the length of yours and added a front and rear pistol grip and the same shell holder you have on the side. Love this shotgun!

    I don't mean to burst your bubble, but you got your info mixed up. The shotgun in this video is a Mossberg 500, I can tell because the safety is on the back of the receiver close to your thumb. All Maverick 88's have the safety in front of the trigger. Both shotguns come in both configurations. Live long and prosper.

    Great shotgun, poor facts, I would strongly recommend you go test your overpenetration first hand before you go blasting away with your shotgun. Sheetrock is not good for stopping anything, even birdshot. It might not kill someone going threw a wall but it could definatly blind them, if you are concerned for your family I would make sure you are aware of the danger you could become if you are not properly trained or educated, that's coming from someone who sleeps with a loaded 12 gauge with 00buck at the bedside.

  • @krazyk86cu

    When it comes to home defense, you don't want to use something that may penetrate walls and accidentally kill an innocent person in the house. Only the attacker. However, as some have pointed out, the shells shown in this video will easily penetrate walls, therefore, they are not ideal for a home defense round. However, I live by myself and don't have anybody else to worry about shooting haha

    Try putting your shells in upside down. Turn the gun to your left on its side with the shell holder down and pull them from the bottom, you will notice a shorter distance to the loading tube. Much faster reload than pulling them out from the top and over the top of the gun.

    I use a remington 11-48 semi auto. I have seen many more misfeeds in a pump due to mishandling than I have ever had in my semi auto. I shortened the wrist on the PG and cut 2 inces off the stock. 18.5 in cylinder bore with a 2 shot extension. I got it for $170 and it has gone through 1000 shells without a failure.

    Racking a shotgun after an intruder is in your house, does two things, (1) It tells the intruder that you are armed, and (2) If he is armed, he can sit tight and wait! Armed confrontations only last a few seconds. Why give the intruder a, "Heads Up by racking your shotgun?" The only sound that he should hear is, "Pop, Pop, Center Mass." You know your home better than the uninvited guest. Why would you want to give him a nano increment of leverage? Keep one in the tube, with the safety on!

    I have seen reviews saying that pistol grips are NOT for accuracy, then you will see one video, an old man, literally hitting targets at crazy distances with his pistol grip.
    I think its better for the house as you can, and there is no defending this, be more mobile, BUT on the flip side, I DO believe one should definitely be trained on a pistol grip and know what they are in store for. I have a pistol grip Mossy 500 JIC II and when I first shot it off, holy shit, was NOT expecting that kick.

  • @tonioyendis4464

    Great gun! Same one i got. Don't say shotgun won't penetrate walls, because thats not true! It all depends on the load ur using. All buckshot and slugs will penetrate dry-wall. There are some birdshot that may not when u start to get in the #7, 8 range.

  • @erict3032
    @erict3032 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have a mossberg 500 with stock loaded ready to go, but I have my Winchester model 1300 “defender” pistol grip next to my bed as well for home defense (I have a light mounted on it plus strobe) . I believe this is the best weapon for home defense. You have to worry about ar15’s rounds going through walls (especially drywall) so that is a concern. I believe they discontinued the 1300 defenders but I’m not sure. My mossberg 500 stays loaded downstairs if I’m down there and need immediate access to it. You can’t go wrong with a good 12 gauge shotgun. That is just my opinion and I’ve had a lot of experience on all small arms being ex-army infantry 11bravo. I would take my 12 gauge any day over my pistols for home defense.

  • @msgherzi

    Great review! I JUST bought this gun online today and am getting it shipped here to California. You have NO idea how hard it is to find this shotgun today in a 7+1 capacity. Everyone is making a run on this shotgun at the moment because of all the craziness going on. I plan on buying a good adjustable stock from ATIGunStocks.
    What type of good home defense ammo do you recommend for a shotgun, krazy86cu?

  • @stchrbarrow
    @stchrbarrow 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The 12 gauge with most 00 buckshot, fires 8 or 9 .33 caliber pellets at about 1200 feet per second. Each pellet carries about as much energy (approximately 175 ft./lbs.) as a .380 ACP.

  • @jennybean0305
    @jennybean0305 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The 00-buck you are loading are loaded with nine .38 cal balls. Those .38 cal balls will go through multiple walls with ease unless they strike a stud. And since it a shotgun, you are essentially guaranteed that most of your pellets will miss the studs.
    Just food for thought. You still need to think about your backdrop when shooting a load that hot.

  • @jennybean0305
    @jennybean0305 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you live in a house (no common walls like an apartment) I'd stick with the 00 and just don't aim low (gotta keep rover safe). If you share walls with people, you might go with a goose load, and don't spare the ammo.
    Another philosophy is stacking a variety of ammo in your magazine. Like loading so you fire some goose, if the threat hasn't quit, some 00, and if it still isn't over your last shell in the magazine is a deer slug
    Odds are just racking that 12 gauge will scare most people away

  • @StephenStine
    @StephenStine 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You are going to have to turn it around when you go to load, so you might as well have the shells turned around in anything that holds shells like that.

Wouldnt want to think of accidentally shooting someone else. Used a laserlyte rail and just a mag lite XL50 and had a 1 inch scope ring. Super easy and not much money at all.

    Nice review. There is an incredibly well done test video on the subject of what load to use in a 12 gauge shotgun in a home defense situation by IRAQVETERAN8888 . 7.5 bird shot is the largest shot that did not go through 4 layers of drywall at 12 feet. Everthing else overpenetrated into the next room, ie: the family you are trying to defend.

    What sort of kickback are we looking at with this weapon? Could an elderly woman use it, for instance, if she had to? I looked it up and it said this gun is around 9 pounds, is that accurate?

    I’m actually updating my stock mossberg 500 right now. Trying to get a 18.5 barrel to put on it and change it to a pistol grip.

    Thanks for clarifying that! I had no idea. Luckily for me the only person living with me at the moment is my dog, so I shouldn't have to worry about that lol. I reckon birdshot would be a better choice then?

      Birdshot is an excellent option for 'home defense' and is more...than enough to get it done!

    Is it me or does the Mossberg have a hair trigger? I've never had an ND but I could see how easy one can be.

    • @Rick-wn5oh
      @Rick-wn5oh 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No hair trigger. I've never measured it. Seems pretty avg. Guns may vary. Maybe you should have it looked at.

      @pjamese3 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Training issue. Even if a firearm does have a hair trigger, it won't matter as long as you keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot. Proper training = no ND.

    I just bought a Mossberg 50588 today and I've never owned a gun before. Too much crazy stuff going on in the world today. Great tutorial, but mine Moss has an 8 round capacity. Do you suggest buckshot or slug?

    well may viewers have pointed out that the kind shells I have in the video will definitely penetrate interior walls which you don't want. If you live with others in the house you are going to want a low powered bird shot. It still may penetrate walls, but its less likely than buck. As far as stopping power... I think the pump sound of a shotgun is more than enough to scare off most intruders ;)

      If I pull a gun on somebody (Which I seriously hope o never have to) I don't want them to hear it and have any kind of warning until I have it aiming directly at their chest. I don't buy into that idea of Scaring them away with the sound. They cities just warn them and let them have a chance to get the jump on you. Just my opinion

      @@rodrodgers3206 I’m with you on that. This video is almost 15 years old. My nightstand gun is a Glock these days

    Mossberg makes the 500 in a 5 plus 1 and a 7 plus 1 magazine capacity. Idk where you heard that the 500 can only be 5 plus 1 because I have owned two 500s, my last one being a 7 plus 1 and my current "mariner" model being 5 plus 1. The models with a 18.5 inch barrel only come in 5 plus 1, but 20 inch and longer barrels come in 7 plus 1. Im sure its on mossbergs website if you dont believe me.

    @romelus69 i agree. get what your comfortable with. but i just got the extended 500. 20" barrel and 2 extra rounds that only add maybe 3 ounces of weight; worth it.

    Lose the PG/heat shield and get a standard stock and a barrel mounted light. Then you have a good HD weapon that's not tacticool but practical.

    night vision goggles and was carrying a very old .22 call revolver with a very long barrel, it looked like an antique, it had a wooden handle with brass fittings and was very ornate. (i only got a good look at it later) he had to walk passed me to get upstairs, but there was a downstairs bedroom with a safe to his immediate right, which is where i assumed he would go. I was wrong and he headed straight for the stairs walking right past me. I jumped up and turned on the strobe aiming my gun

    People who have just a pistol grip on their shotgun have not fired that shotgun much with heavy recoil loads. Much better to have a full stock to control the recoil, keep the sights on target, if you can even aim your sights, and it is also easier to engage and disengage the tang safety of the Mossburg using a standard stock.

    Low brass vs high brass(bird shots/buck shots/slugs) all comes down your ammo. Buckshots for sure will go through walls
