  • This iconic landmark in Russia's capital city Moscow has a striking resemblance to the India's Taj Mahal.
Welcome to PART 2 of our Moscow series!
We take you on a journey to the biggest orthodox church of Russia - Cathedral of Christ the Saviour
This Cathedral was initially constructed in 1812 after retreat from Moscow by Napoleon Bonaparte following his invasion which lasted 5 months. As a gratitude to Jesus Christ, who was believed to be the saviour of Moscow during Nepoleon's invasion, Russians dedicated a grand cathedral to him. But it was demolished in 1931 by Russian leader Joseph Stalin who wanted to change the face of Russia's industrialization.
He wanted to construct a 400 meter tall palace called "Palace of the Soviets" but it could never be built due to shortage of funds and flooding of Moskwa river. Due to flood, the pit was filled up with water and was temporarily used by the residents as a swimming pool - which was later converted into a full-fledged swimming pool. It was the biggest open air swimming pool in the world!
Later in 1990, it was decided to reconstruct the old cathedral and its construction was completed in 2000.
